Lily of the valley (Convallaria majalis) is not a true lily; it’s actually part of the asparagus family, though its foliage is reminiscent of some lilies. Medium green leaves about 5 to 10 inches long and 1 to 3 inches wide arch from the center of a clump. Petite, fragrant, white flowers rise on long stems from the leaf clumps in spring, and orange-red berries appear later in the fall if different varieties are planted for cross-pollination. Don’t let the delicate appearance of lily of the valley’s bell-shaped flowers fool you. This is a hardy ground cover that spreads gradually but persistently to form dense colonies. Lily of the valley can be planted by root divisions, potted nursery plants, or seeds in the fall, though spring planting is also acceptable. It is considered invasive in much of the Midwest and Northeast, where planting it may be strongly discouraged or even outlawed. Be aware that lily of the valley is toxic to humans, as well as to dogs, cats, and horses.It contains glycosides and saponins that can cause cardiac symptoms as well as digestive upset if large quantities are eaten. Consumption of the berries by children is the most common cause of poisoning, and fatalities are possible.

Lily of the Valley Care Lily of the valley will grow vigorously in almost any spot with some shade. In fact, gardeners commonly use it under trees where many other plants won’t grow due to the shade. Plant the rhizomes about 6 inches apart with the growth buds buried about 1/2 inch deep.   This plant needs little attention to thrive once it’s established. It is a long-lived plant that doesn’t have any serious issues with pests or diseases. Plan to water during dry spells. Also, if flowering has decreased on older plants, it’s beneficial to dig them up and divide them to refresh their growth.

Warning

Lily of the valley reproduces by spreading rhizomes and you must carefully supervise it so it doesn’t escape its boundaries. Lily of the valley can quickly spread and overtake a large area and may end up choking out other plants in its vicinity. The European native is considered an invasive plant in many parts of the Midwest and Northeast, and in some places is even designated a noxious weed.

Light

Plant lily of the valley in partial sun to full shade. Direct morning sun is all right, but the plant needs protection from the harsh afternoon sun. And if you live in a warmer part of its growing zones, full shade is best.

Soil

Lily of the valley prefers organically rich soil with good drainage. But it can grow in a range of soil types, including clay soil. It likes an acidic to neutral soil pH but can tolerate slightly alkaline soil, too.

Water

This plant prefers consistently moist but not soggy soil. Water whenever the soil begins to dry out due to a lack of rainfall and/or hot weather. Soil that is too dry will impede the plant’s growth and flowering.

Temperature and Humidity

Lily of the valley prefers mild conditions with average humidity. Temperatures between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit are best. The plant doesn’t do well in dry, hot climates. And even in mild climates, it might die back during the hottest summer months. This usually won’t kill the plant; it generally returns the next spring.

Fertilizer

Lily of the valley typically doesn’t need any fertilizer unless you have poor soil. If your soil lacks nutrients, you can add a slow-release granular fertilizer in the spring. For the amount to use, follow the product label instructions.

    chilly out there this morning below 40*. I fell asleep last evening watching tv and then I forgot to bring in the hummer feeder and the jelly feeder. (we have to because the raccoons will destroy them if left out over night.)
    but the garden is weeded, and ready for vegetables!

    I had commented on one of the Posts that I had discovered the car I purchased in 2020 was listening to me. Not only that, but in the ‘fine print’ on their site they admitted to this and also stated that it was the responsibility of the driver to inform ALL passengers that they were being listened to and recorded.   34. Thanks for the B Day wishes Pat! Have been very busy the last few months. We bought a house back in January and got moved in. Finally getting everything settled in. We spent a lot of time getting our raised beds (7) put in and the old ground garden double dug and amended. Should have plenty of veggies soon. Our arugula is already starting to get too big…can eat it quick enough in salads…lol. Hope all is well w/ y’all!

    Major progress report: Piper called me and we talked for over 45 minutes!!! She is going to talk to her Dad about me coming for her BD this year – I will probably decline – I think that would be the best course. She will be going on a trip to Europe May 30 with a group from school…..not a great time to be going to Europe but….she was all excited to hear that Gage had moved back and asked for his phone #. Progress, my friends….progress. And yes, she wants me to plant some carrots for her this year. Her Dad is on the tail-end of a m/c road trip with some NA friends – 4 couples – and blew a tire, rolling his bike and getting a nasty case of road rash in OK. I guess they went to Mexico…..smdh. (I already knew this since my Sis was checking out his FB page when we talked earlier but I didn’t tell Piper that! She is in cheer leading, plays a bunch of different instruments, and attended a debate contest where she finished 5th overall out of 8 different groups – yep, she IS her Mother’s daughter!!! She is a couple of inches taller than me now. She even talked about finding a Mommy Penny in their driveway recently….so she hasn’t forgotten, at least.

    Two black males who were arrested for allegedly murdering a handyman may face hate crime charges after one admitted that they were seeking to kill a white person, according to police.

    23-year-old Tahj Matthews and 25-year-old Maurice Holmes were arrested on April 11 and charged with the first-degree murder of 66-year-old Lawrence Herr the day before in the city of Kenner, Louisiana.

    Herr was working as a handyman when he was fatally shot in the back while installing a mailbox. An autopsy found that Herr had been shot once through the back and that the bullet exited out of his chest.

    Police said they were able to identify the suspect’s vehicle, a silver Mercedes, only three hours after the shooting.

    On Tuesday, during a hearing with Holmes and Matthews, a detective revealed a possible motive for the shooting. He said that they had confessed that they had “wanted to kill a white person.”

    Kenner Police Chief Keith Conley said that they were able to track the vehicle through license plate reader cameras.

    He told WWL-TV that they could face hate crime charges in addition to the murder charges.

    Conley issued a warning to other would-be murderers.

    “Let this serve as a message to anyone who considers terrorizing this city or its people that the Kenner PD will be relentless until we bring a criminal to justice,” Conley said. “This was a heinous drive-by assassination of a kind, caring man who was helping other. We were determined to end the rage of these criminals before they could target anyone else.”

    He added that he would push for the death penalty if a court upheld the charges of first-degree murder.

    Look how New Yorkers failed to fight back when they were hit right in their own front yard on 9/11. What did they do when it was so obvious that every firefighter and building professional … and anyone how had a basic primary school education … should have known that two 110 story steel-framed concrete skyscrapers no way in hell because of office fires fueled by office furnishings and kerosene based jet fuel can blow up into dust and fall in perfect symmetry into the path of most resistance in nearly freefall speed? Waved the flag and called each others “heroes”.

    Look how Vietnam era parents of troops killed and maimed in Iraq on the in your face WMD’s lie. What did they do when it was clear to everyone that the govt lied about WMD’s? Nothing. Waved the flag and called their maimed and killed kids “heroes”.

    Look how the people residing in the Greater Boston area failed to say NO and fight back against the military lockdown and occupation following the ridiculous Boston Marathon false-flag attack of April 2013. What did they do? Thanked the troops pointing guns at them and their children and commandeering their homes and later had parades celebrating each other as ‘Boston Strong’. That was 10 years ago.     How this almost entire country rolled over to the tyrannical lockdowns, loss of livelihoods, and forced injections of experimental substances because the govt said so … all I can say, Jeff, is that we are way too gone and long since past having any kind of resistance or fightback from the American people who have for decades been bending over and spreading their cheeks and then grabbing a flag, shouting U-S-A, and thanking the big pricks who have raped and pillaged them when it’s all over.

When we cave on our principles, as sooooo many people are doing, and do the same thing the dems do? We don’t DESERVE to win!                 I look at the ballot harvesting like any other race. if they suddenly said the kentucky derby doesn’t need horses to win–just horsepower–and everyone else was using cars–would you still inside on running a horse?
                i see it as they changed the rules and we have to adjust. things would be different is they allowed horses to be drugged–causing detriment to the animal…that i couldn’t do. but keeping up with legal rule changes I can.

                ballot harvesting is NOT a good law, but in order to rescind or remove that law, we HAVE to get back the majority in both houses and the presidency and handicapping ourselves will not allow that to happen.
                we can leave the united states, that is a choice, or we can try to beat them at their own game and once in power, change things back.

This is where you and I differ – there are internal, personal, life-laws that a person follows thruout their life and then there are public laws – does that public law violate your personal law? If so, you must make a choice – follow what you know deep inside is right, not whether or not it is legal – i.e., abortion. It is legal so…..???

    A spokesperson with DeSantis’ political operation did not comment on the shift and Ingoglia did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

    DeSantis first set up his committee back in 2018 and he used it to raise a record amount of money for his re-election campaign last year as he pulled in donations from many major Republican donors. Current campaign finance records show that the committee has nearly $86 million in the bank.

    But DeSantis cannot use money raised for Friends of Ron DeSantis in a federal race because state law does not limit how much someone can give to the political committee or the source of the donations. But that money could be shifted to a super PAC that backs DeSantis if the governor is no longer connected to the political committee. While some have questioned the legality of such a move, the Federal Elections Commission deadlocked over a similar strategy that was used by Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.). (read more)

  47. Whoa! That’s a first! Just saw a female Oriole on the woodpecker feeder under the eaves! I’ve never seen them on suet before!!! Oh, and the gray tiger-striped kitty showed up again today. I looked out the bathroom window and saw him(?) hunched down in the grass, stalking birds. So I put some food out and came back inside; went right to the food and ate most of it. Once he moved away, I re-filled the dish and put it back out again. He is VERY leery but did come back and eat more once I went back inside.

        1. i can’t even twist my mind to think about how that relates to any kind of a doctor…except maybe a large animal vet who has to sedate an elephant. but what do you do with the bowling pins??
