Mr. Ed’s Elephants

[I found this article about Mr. Ed’s Elephants on the PA Bucketlist.com site!]

Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium just may be the best elephant-themed roadside attraction in Pennsylvania!

Elephants and candy everywhere you look.

Located just outside of Gettysburg, Mister Ed’s features a dizzying array of elephant figurines, circus souvenirs, toys, statues, gardens, and artwork, as well as over a thousand kinds of candy!

How to Find Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium

Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium is located at 6019 Chambersburg Rd, Orrtanna, PA 17353.

Exploring the Exterior of Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum

The grounds surrounding Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium are a collection of whimsically-decorated gardens incorporating elephants as the central theme (of course!).

The water garden featuring a mother and baby elephant with water shooting out of their trunks caught my eye in particular, but all the gardens are a treat to walk through.

Even an old delivery truck becomes a unique piece of artwork in the gardens at Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum.

And while Bedford may be home to Pennsylvania’s largest roadside coffee pot, this teapot-shaped garden shed at Mister Ed’s is impressive in its own right, and fittingly it also houses a collection of teapots.

Step Inside Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium

A quick glance around the inside of Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium is enough to cause massive sensory overload and a sugar rush!

Everywhere you look, on the walls, ceilings, shelves, and countertops, you’ll see elephants and candy of every possible description.

More than 12,000 elephant-related mementos are on display, a feast for the eyes and an inspiration to those of us (myself included) who walk the fine line between collectors and hoarders!

If it existed in the 20th century and it had an elephant emblazoned on it, you’ll most likely find it at Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum.

There are even “Pachyderm Points” displayed around the museum, imparting knowledge about real elephants on inquisitive visitors.

If you’re a hardcore fan of elephants or vintage toys, you’d best budget an hour or two just to explore the museum portion of Mister Ed’s!

The Candy Emporium at Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum

In case you missed the sign when you walked in the door, Mister Ed’s is also famous for homemade fudge!

Featuring more than 70 flavors of fudge, I’ve yet to try one that WASN’T delicious.

If fudge isn’t your thing, there are literally more than 1,000 different candy options, including an entire room full of PEZ candies and dispensers!

Christmas at Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium

Mister Ed’s definitely gets in the spirit at Christmastime!

Inside the store and out, you’ll find all your favorite Christmas characters woven into the already busy tapestry of decorations and displays.

From traditional Dickens-like carolers…

to the not-so-traditional Miss Ele out front.

Already one of the Gettysburg area’s most unique attractions and favorite candy stores, Mister Ed’s is the perfect place to shop for Christmas stocking stuffers.

If you’re road tripping through the Gettysburg area at Christmastime, make it a point to stop, stroll the grounds, and do a little shopping.

Planning Your Visit to Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum

Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium is open every day, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

In the age of COVID, it’s probably prudent to call ahead and confirm those hours – the phone number there is (717) 352-3792.

There is no charge to walk the gardens or to tour the museum.

If you’ve got elephants on the brain, a hardcore sweet tooth, or just love quirky roadside attractions, Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum and Candy Emporium near Gettysburg checks all the right boxes!

  6. OK – found Mister Ed!

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “Edwin Lee Gotwalt, more commonly known to southcentral Pa locals as “Mister Ed,” has died at the age of 84. He died of natural causes according to Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum and Candy’s Facebook page.

Gotwalt owned and operated Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum & Candy Emporium from 1975 to 2014, when he retired. He then sold the business to his grandchildren. Gotwalt was beloved in the community.

“I am so sad to hear. What a larger than life man who brought so much joy to the area. Prayers to the family,” said Crystal Schelle, a commenter on the Facebook post.

Another commenter, Holly Fries-Hemler said, “I am truly heartbroken to read this. He has been such a staple in our area for as long as I can remember. Thank you so much for sharing this information with a community that loved him so. My condolences to the family, the staff and to the community who will grieve his passing. Rest In Peace Mr. Ed.”

Condolences may be sent to his family at 6019 Chambersburg Road, Orrtanna, PA 1735. According to the Facebook post, a celebration of his life is being planned for late spring at Lower Marsh Creek Presbyterian Church.

  9. OK, more about Mister Ed – well worth reading – he was QUITE the character!!!

“As Mister Ed told Public Opinion in 2002: “I lost my name a long time ago. Everyone just calls me Mister Ed.”

The business, originally known as Mister Ed’s: The Area’s Most Unusual General Store, evolved as Ed began collecting elephant trinkets and other odd items. The original store closed due to bankruptcy in 1983, but a stroke of luck and a local realtor helped him find his current location. He reopened the business as Mister Ed’s Elephant Museum in 1984.
    ————-
    ‘He loved proving people wrong’
Stunts were at the center of his unique brand of marketing.

At Christmastime, he became known for arriving at his store as Santa Claus. When his attempt to arrive in a hot air balloon went wrong and he was left dangling from a tree in Michaux State Forest, it attracted international attention.

To celebrate America’s Bicentennial in 1976, he got himself in the news for his effort to stay awake for 76 hours. And, yes, he made it.

“He was always thinking, always dreaming, and always coming up with ideas other people thought were a little crazy. He loved proving people wrong,” Nicole Bucher said, adding that he kept a yellow legal pad to write down ideas and lists.

His care extended past his own business to the region. Janet Pollard, the executive director of the Franklin County Visitors Bureau, saw this when both participated in events promoting local tourism.

“He was totally entrepreneurial in his approach to getting people to be interested in not just his products but the place that we all call home,” she said.”

  12. “– Laura Bartlett and Greta Crawford have founded an organization to address the forced treatments patients receive when they’re hospitalized for COVID-19, but the same strategy can be used to protect yourself against other medical hazards as well

    — The Caregivers and Consent document they created is an “advance decision” document. So, the moment you enter the hospital, the hospital staff know what they can and cannot do to you; they are legally required to respect your current care decisions. And unlike an Advance Directive (which only kicks in when you are incapacitated) the Caregivers and Consent document goes into effect immediately

    — It’s important to complete and notarize your Caregivers and Consent document BEFORE you ever need to go to the hospital

    — Make sure you send the completed, signed and notarized document to the CEO of the hospital in two ways: (1) via a professional courier (one that specializes in delivering legal documents); and (2) via the Postal system with certified mail, return receipt requested. The CEO is responsible for all legal business relating to the hospital, including the medical records, so the CEO, not your attending physician, is the one whose responsibility it is to get your consent document entered into your electronic medical record

    — Make at least 10 copies of the signed, notarized document and keep one copy on your person, in case you ever have an accident or acute illness requiring hospitalization. Also provide copies to the attending physician and nurse once hospitalized

    — Also, should you become hospitalized (and therefore unable to personally send the document to the CEO), designate a family member or friend to send your Caregivers and Consent document on your behalf. Additional recommendations to ensure your safety are included

    1. EXCERPT: “Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) has been cherished for its tremendous healing properties since ancient times. It is a symbol of the true perseverance of nature. Although this plant has a high value, it can be quite a troublesome for the gardeners.

The dandelion botanical name “Taraxacum officinale” speaks for its usefulness and refers to the healing effect. Namely, ‘Taraxacum’ comes from the Greek and means ‘anti-inflammatory’ and ‘officinale’ refers to the common name for herbs. However anti-inflammatory effect is not the only benefit of the dandelion.

Dandelion can help to fight inflammation, boost immune system, act as an anti aging agent in skin care products and even treat type 2 diabetes, cancer, and HIV. In this article we write about 18 benefits of the dandelion which are all backed by science.”

  14. “Feds spend billions to boost your ‘required forfeiture’ of property–‘Congress must act to prevent law enforcement from treating Americans like ATMs’”
    By Bob Unruh
    Published May 7, 2023 at 11:51am

ENTIRE ARTICLE @ WND: The federal government has announced a program to spend $6 billion to boost the amount of property Americans are required to “forfeit” to the government. It’s a lucrative business for the feds. For example, a report from the Institute for Justice notes that federal agencies grabbed some $45.7 billion in “revenue” by forcing Americans’ to forfeit various assets from 2000 to 2019.

About $31 billion was given to the DOJ’s Assets Forfeiture Fund and about $15 billion to the Treasury Forfeiture Fund. The DOJ and Treasury control that money entirely, and it can be handed out without congressional approval. The IJ reported the DOJ now has adopted a plan to give private corporations $6.24 billion over a five-year period to “increase the capacity” for more forfeitures.

“The sheer size of these contracts demonstrates how forfeiture has become a big business for federal law enforcement,” explained Dan Alban, director of IJ’s National Initiative to End Forfeiture Abuse. “And it’s not just DOJ and DHS that have become addicted to forfeiture dollars; there’s now an entire forfeiture-industrial complex dependent on the feds continuing these predatory practices. These are six billion reasons we need civil forfeiture reform now. Congress must act to prevent law enforcement from treating ordinary Americans like ATMs.”

One part of the issue is pending before the Supreme Court right now. It’s a Minnesota case where a woman, behind in her taxes, lost her condominium to the government. The government there then kept the entire proceeds from the sale, tens of thousands of dollars more than was owed in taxes.”

The IJ reported in March Congress reintroduced the bipartisan Fifth Amendment Integrity Restoration (FAIR) Act, H.R. 1525, which would overhaul federal civil forfeiture laws. “The bill would remove the profit incentive that drives so many federal forfeitures, end the federal ‘equitable sharing’ program that is used to circumvent state law protections for property rights, and eliminate the unfair administrative forfeiture process,” the IJ said.

The vast majority of federal forfeitures are civil in nature, in that the government never charges anyone with a crime; it just takes the asset and keeps it. Property owners are forced to hire lawyers and go to court to try to “prove” that their asset is “innocent” and should be returned.

“From 2000 to 2019, 84% of DOJ forfeitures were civil forfeitures, while from 2000 to 2016, 98% of Treasury forfeitures were civil forfeitures,” the IJ reported. That means they were processed “administratively” and the owners whose property was taken never got their day in court.”

  15. “The chase to find out how Kerry is spending millions of tax dollars–Has refused multiple requests from Congress for transparency”
    By WND News Services
    Published May 6, 2023 at 6:27pm

EXCERPT: “John Kerry leads an international jet-set life that might exhaust a runway model. If President Biden’s special envoy for climate was not in Washington or relaxing at his mansion near Nantucket Harbor, he could be found in Brazil, Panama, the Bahamas, or Germany. And that’s just in February and March.

While Kerry trumpets his meetings and appearances around the world, the State Department wraps the rest of his efforts in a cloak of secrecy usually reserved for CIA black box operations. It has refused to specify lists of people he is meeting with and who is advising him as he circles the globe.

His office has stonewalled requests for budget and staffing information from legislators and government watchdog groups. In response to a Freedom of Information Act request filed last year by RealClearInvestigations for a breakdown on how the climate envoy’s roughly $16.5 million 2022 budget was spent, the State Department said it could not comply with the request until April 2025, months after both the 2024 election and the expiration of President Biden’s current term.

The secrecy surrounding Kerry’s work is reaching a boiling point with the threat of a congressional subpoena. Frustrated that Kerry’s office ignored two previous requests for detailed information about its budget when his party was in the minority, Republican Rep. James Comer, who now heads the House Oversight Committee, sent what he labeled a final courtesy letter on April 25 and added that a subpoena would accompany the next request if Kerry’s “powerful, unchecked position” continued to hide the information. ”

              3) same as #2, but the illegals join in. we still win, but the powers that survive allow them all to remain as a reward. still game over only the wef gets their desired results and don’t have to reward their corrupt minions.

  16. A pragmatic voice of reason again perhaps???

ENTIRE ARTICLE @ CTH: “If James Comer had a U.S. Marshals badge and a set of handcuffs I would be impressed. Alas, unfortunately Comer is the Chairman of what… Yep, the House Oversight Committee, otherwise known as the “Chaff and Countermeasures Committee” famous for Fast n Furious investigations, IRS investigations, Benghazi investigations, and now Hunter Biden investigations.

For the non-pretending among us, an unfortunately very small – albeit intellectually superior rebel alliance, we can overlay the timing of James Comer’s “explosive” and scheduled Wednesday press conference with the DC motive to distract away from the U.S. southern border as Title 42 expires and a million illegal aliens invade. Perhaps the most obvious ‘chaff and countermeasures’ deployment this year.

If the material to present is as explosive and damning as a very excited James Comer proclaims, why wait? Notice the emphasis on Wednesday, Wednesday, Wednesday — WATCH:

All of what James Comer outlines is likely accurate and true, but keep in mind the DC UniParty has an alliance of interest. (1) The Uniparty supports open borders (timing of this press conference); and (2) the UniParty supports the removal of Joe Biden (content of press conference).”

    1. Hot dog! I have the nectar feeder hanging out in front so I can’t see if anything is hitting it. But I did see a Goldfinch earlier – just one! And, of course, I have no thistle seed altho I have the feeder for it. There are a bunch of smaller black birds with a rust-colored breast and underside that I need to look up to see what they are…..I’m wondering if they may be Purple Martins but they usually feed on bugs…..I’ve never seen them here but we used to get them when I was growing up in Norfolk. We had a purple martin house way up on a tall pole.

Whew! That was a job – full sun on the east bed and I’m out there in a black t-shirt! Sheesh! That soil was hard as a rock about 3″ down and dry, dry, dry, in spite of all the rain we’ve had. But I retrieved my potato fork and commenced digging. In any case, I got ‘er done! Three cantaloupe hills with 3 seeds in each, which I will thin to one or two, covered with my make-shift ice cream bucket greenhouses. There is also a little moat around each of them that I can fill with water. This year I’m going to wait longer to take the buckets off – maybe I can save them from the rabbits. Cross your fingers! And, of course, after the fact, I realized I should have staggered my plantings but too late now! What I can’t eat before they get to ripe, I’ll give away.

        1. Quite a bit – the vines really spread out with really big leaves. I have my hills about 2 feet apart, down the center of the bed. With even only 1 plant in each hill, that entire area will be filled with vines – I’m waiting to see if any of the volunteer cukes come up again so I didn’t plant anything in front of the fencing….yet. This pic was from when I first planted it several years ago. If you look closely, you can see the cantaloupe hills at the top.
