Jamaica, Mon

Today is the anniversary of the day that Columbus discovered Jamaica, so I thought I’d bring an article from WeJamaicansBeLike.com on interesting facts about this gorgeous island.

Jamaica is what?

If you thought Jamaica was only about Bob Marley, Reggae Music and lighting up some good herbs, then you’re in for a big surprise when you check out some of these facts below.

As a small nation, Jamaica has a lot of influence in the world and its people are amongst the most progressive. From education, to politics, to entertainment, Jamaica is not only a leader in the Caribbean, but the world.

Here are some interesting facts about Jamaica you may not have known.

On to The Fun Facts About Jamaica

Jamaica is Bananas

If you don’t like bananas, blame Jamaica for it! If you do like bananas, well Jamaica is the reason why. Jamaica was the first country to export bananas establishing a global banana trade. Crop disease and major competition from Central America did the Jamaican banana trade in.

James Bond is Jamaican

On the shores of Ocho Rios, James Bond was born! Ian Flemming then lived in Jamaica when he penned the famous 14 James Bond novels. Jamaica is still home to the Golden Eye Hotel and Resort which began as the luxurious home of Ian Flemming. The novels have inspired 23 James Bond Films, one even with the hotel namesake – Goldeneye from 1995.

More Coffee Please

When you think of Jamaica you think sand and beaches, but many may not think coffee. Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee is one of the most sought after and expensive coffees on the market.

What is Rastafarian?
Think dreadlocks? Think Jamaica? When people think about Jamaica, they think about the popular deadlock style. Only 2 percent of the Rastafarian population in the world live in Jamaica.

Everybody Say Amen!

Jamaicans are very religious people. Jamaica has the most churches per capita in the world. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Jamaica has over 1,600 “churches.”

Fresh From Abroad
Jamaica’s indigenous people, the Arawaks cultivated corn and yams. The crops we know today like sugar cane, coconut, breadfruit, bamboo, bananas and mangoes are not native to Jamaica. The popular crops were imported at different times in Jamaica’s rich history.

Brrrr, Jamaicans Can Handle the Cold

If you have not seen the movie Cool Running by now you are missing out on comedy gold. The movie is based on the 1988 Jamaican bob sled team. The team was the first tropical country to enter a Winter Olympic event.

Independence and a Queen

Jamaica was the first Caribbean nation to gain independence from the British Commonwealth in 1962. Jamaica had internal self-government years before it became an independent nation. To this day Queen Elizabeth II remains the Queen of Jamaica but by tradition only.

Raise Your Flags High

One of the most recognized flags in the world, the green, yellow and black Jamaican flag is only one of two countries in the world that has no colors in common with the flag of the United States of America. Mauritania, the other country, is green and yellow. The Jamaican flag is recognizable as the two yellow stripes intersect in an X with green filling in the top and bottom and black on either side.

All Aboard

Jamaica was the first country in the Western world to build a railroad, built just 18 years after Britain built theirs.

Blue Mountains and Moons

The Blue Mountains in Jamaica, named for the mist that covers them, are not just ideal for coffee. The mist that covers the mountain peaks appears to be blue. The blue mist also covers the moon making it appear blue. The phrase once in a blue moon does not cover the Blue Mountains as there have been dozen sightings of sapphire colored moons in the past 40 years

Orchids Everywhere

Some people would never think orchids when they think about Jamaica. With over 200 species of Orchids growing wild throughout the island of Jamaica an astounding 73 of the species are unique to Jamaica. With 1,000 species of trees and 500 species of ferns, visitors are pleasantly surprised to know that Jamaica is one of best place to see wild flora and fauna.

GoaLLLLLL

Futbol, football, soccer or whatever you call it, Jamaicans know how to play it! Jamaica is the first team from the English-speaking Caribbean to qualify for World Cup. The Reggae Boyz, as they are fondly known to the world, went on to World Cup soccer finals in France in 1998.

Most Beautiful Women

Many places brag about having the most beautiful women in the world, but Jamaica can brag and have the stats to prove it. Jamaican beautiful women stand strong, as they are the sixth country on the list of countries to win the Miss World titles. With 3 winners and 3 second runners-up, only Venezuela, UK, India, USA and Sweden have more winners. Just the size of Jamaica alone compared to these countries elevates the bragging rights.

I’m Drinking Rum and …

We all know Jamaicans love their rum! They love it so much, and wanted the world to know! Jamaica was the first island in the Caribbean to produce rum on a commercial basis.

Seeing Doubles

The little island Jamaica has more multiple (two or more) live births than anywhere else in the world. Who would have thought Jamaicans were so fertile?

Strong Politics

Jamaica is known for always making a clear stance. Jamaica was the first country to impose economic sanctions against the former apartheid regime of South Africa.

Google It

Jamaica is a great innovator. In 1994 Jamaica was the first country in the Caribbean region to launch a web site! www. jamaicatravel.com was launched in 1994 and took Jamaica to the world!

Mail It In

In 1688 Jamaica was the first British colonial territory to establish a postal service.

    1. Morning, Pat! Not a big Star Wars nerd but I enjoyed most of them. I do have Star Trek IV saved on my DVD and re-watch it occasionally – where they save the humpback whales. I also LOVED the movie Cool Running – excellent comedy, with a little bit of serious underneath. I was kind of worried about leaving my plants out since the forecast is often wrong; but I needn’t have – 48 when I got up this morning. Yeah! Supposed to get some rain over the next few days.

      1. Morning Filly!
you do realize star wars and star trek are 2 different things and mixing them up could get you in trouble in certain nerd circles? LOL
(this is NOT one of those circles–I enjoyed them both)
we’ve never seen cool runnings, but it’s on our Christmas dvd list now.
        it’s about 40*…day 7 of dreariness and rain/snow/hail

        1. Oh, shit – you’re right! I got them mixed up! See, I’m NOT up on those kinds of movies – I’ve always been more attracted to real life-type movies. I recently recorded all the Star Wars movies and tried to watch some of them again…..nope! DELETE! Ask me about Free Willy, Apollo 13, the Snowy River movies, etc., etc. and I can go on all day! LOL

“I agree with this. But your blaming of the NRA has soured me on your platform. They never ran in and started killing people. They never advocated for it. They DID support basic constitutional rights. Contrast that against these folks…”

“He doesn’t support the 2nd amendment. He also wants to jail those that do not believe in climate change. His wife Cheryl Hines was an assistant to Rob Reiner a major Trump hater. Obviously Robert isn’t a leader since he allows his wife to make a fool of him.”

Things Trump did behind the scenes that nobody knew about.

Another time his limo had a flat tire.

A guy pulled over and changed the tire before anyone else got it done.

Trump found out who he was…….and a short time later PAID OFF THE MAN’S HOUSE.

You see any democrats doing stuff such as this?!?

  10. so now (surprise, surprise) wants to take responsibility for the controlled burn in East Palestine
    FTA
EAST PALESTINE, Ohio (NewsNation) — The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirmed to NewsNation that the agency was not consulted on, and did not sign off on, the controlled burn that released toxic chemicals into the air following the February derailment of a Norfolk Southern train derailed in East Palestine, Ohio.

Norfolk Southern, however, maintains the EPA was involved in the discussions.

On Feb. 7, three days after the derailment in East Palestine, Norfolk Southern conducted what they called a controlled burn, releasing 116,000 gallons of vinyl chloride into the air over the small community.

“I think that was a mistake,” said former EPA administrator Judith Enck. “I’m looking very closely at who made the decision to set the vinyl chloride on fire. I think that decision will be a major factor in the lives of many communities in Pennsylvania and Ohio.”
Feinstein’s return to Washington remains unclear

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine previously said he was among those involved in the controlled burn decision.

“… We then made the decision to go with the second option — which was the controlled release,” he said on Feb. 14.

However, Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw told Congress on March 9 that the decision was “made by unified command, under the direction of the incident commander.”

East Palestine Fire Chief Keith Drabick did not respond to a NewsNation request for comment.

It remains unclear who had the legal authority to order a controlled burn.

“Having him (Drabick) make that monumental decision doesn’t seem logical to me,” said Enck. “Further, I was on a meeting with the EPA recently and asked them why they signed off on the decision to do the open burn. They told me they did not sign off. The EPA told me that they were not asked about whether or not to do the open burn of vinyl chloride, and that they were not part of that decision.”

NewsNation reached out to the EPA for a statement but had not heard back by the time of publication.

Testimony from Eric Brewer, director of emergency services for Beaver County, Ohio, suggests that Norfolk Southern hazmat coordinator was driving the early decisions and that the rail company recommended burning the vinyl chloride.

I see your hair. It is a wig.
Your Adam’s apple still looks big.
You are a man, and that is clear.
I do not see a woman here.
I must admit, it’s rather odd
To hear you say you’re now a broad.
You have no uterus, so no:
You cannot bleed from down below.
I do not like your padded bra!
You should not use the women’s spa!
      You tell me you had surgery;
Your pronouns are still ‘him’ and ‘he.’
Your chromosomes are X and Y.
That means you’ll always be a guy.
You gave yourself a girly name.
That does not mean you’re now a dame.
A surgeon chopped your eggs and ham?
      I still won’t call you Ma’am I am.

  11. Well, I went out to put my downspouts back up since they are calling for rain. My GS appears to have taken or misplaced the ONE socket driver I always use to put them up – it was the perfect size. Grrrr…..I looked everywhere I could think of and couldn’t find it. We gonna have to have a “come to Jesus” meeting on that subject! Of course, I’ve got enough tools scattered around I finally scrounged up another driver and socket but…..you do NOT mess with my tools – put them back where you found them and that little shit KNOWS that!!!! SMH

As I was putting them up, I noticed that the Hostas are peeking thru now, too. Daffodils and those little grape-looking purple flowers are coming up, as are the Peony bushes, and 3 of the 4 Honeysuckle are greening. Hardly any woodpeckers around except for the ever-present Nuthatches. Black birds fricking everywhere this year, including Red-Wing – I noticed yesterday that their chirping is distinctly different than the regular BBs.

I was up early this morning but didn’t see the tiger gray kitty….

  15. “ICS at the EU Parliament Summary: Dr. Malone’s summary video and transcript”

    ROBERT W MALONE MD, MS
    MAY 4, 2023

EXCERPT: “Yesterday, the third International COVID Summit was held at the European Parliament. As noted by the European Parliament Members in attendance, this was an historic event. The summit lasted all day, with many fantastic speakers. It was live streamed and recordings of the many speakers will be made available soon. The ICS summit covered all aspects of the pandemic, as well as the documentation of the increasing power grab by the World Health Organization to control public health and increased control by organized globalized entities throughout the world .

At the end of the day, I was asked to give a summary of the day’s highlights. This was no small task – but I gave it my best shot. Please pardon my “ums,” I was stumbling over the many new names and concepts that I had to quickly collate in my own mind on short notice.

As an organizing member (and I suppose co-founder) of the International COVID summit, I have been amazed at how these events have come together. This particular summit has been a huge success.

Today, a press conference was held with the members of EU Parliament who helped organize this event, myself and Dr. Byram Bridle. There was much excitement about the high quality, primary data shared at the meeting and the need for the media to participate more actively in disseminating the important work of these scientists. People at the Parliament, including MEPs are enthusiastic about an ICS book of the presentations presented at the EU Parliament be published soon.

At that press conference, it was announced by Romanian officials that they wish for an International COVID summit to be held in Romania in September of this year. Another European nation, which I am not privy to name yet, has also expressed a strong interest in having a summit in their country’s legislative body as well. This is real progress!

Last week, I put out a call for donations and so many of readers responded. We raised just about $10,000.00, which helped pay for the event venue on May 1st. This day was a closed session of about 100 doctors and scientists, who were able to discuss their findings in detail and strategize in this confidential forum. It also helped pay for a media event and open public sessions, which are being held today.”

  17. Well, that was productive. Since I’ve been in and out the last couple of days, I finally checked and saw I missed 2 calls from Jerry. So I called Mark and told him to just tell J to come on over. I was outside puttering again, and looking at the front porch where I want to put the vincas. I need to get them planted but don’t want to spend the $$$ right now for the railing piece. So I went rummaging…and lo and behold, I found some metal decorative sections I used my first summer here to line my flower beds. The rest of them are around the east bed where I plant the cantaloupe and cukes. Perfect!!! Ah, it’s nice to be a hoarder!!! Save all kinds of $$$’s!

I was in front, in full sun, in black capri’s and a long-sleeved red t-shirt, baking and sweating while I prepared the bed for/planted the vincas. Once I catch my breath, I will take a pic for comparison when they are in full growth. Got the mower ready to go, had to air up 2 tires, one front and one back. Picked up the branches in the yard and blown-in trash here and there. Sweaty and pooped but it feels good to get back into the swing of things.

  20. ENTIRE ARTICLE @ ReclaimTheNet: “On Tuesday, America First Legal (AFL) nonprofit sued people behind the Election Integrity Partnership and Virality Project in a federal class action, accusing them of conspiring with the US government to carry out online censorship on a mass scale. AFL filed the lawsuit on behalf of the Health Freedom Louisiana co-director, Jill Hines, and The Gateway Pundit news site founder Jim Hoft.

The defendants – the Stanford Internet Observatory, its director, and research manager, Alex Stamos and Renée DiResta, University of Washington’s Dr. Kate Starbird, Graphika (a social media analytics company), and the Atlantic Research Council’s Digital Forensic Lab – are alleged to have in 2020 monitored 859 million and tracked 22 million posts as “candidates” for censorship on Twitter along – in the time before the ownership change.

We obtained a copy of the lawsuit for you here. https://docs.reclaimthenet.org/HINES-STAMOS-9824.pdf

In 2021, in seven months of that year, the focus was on posts about Covid, when AFL says 200 million engagements were flagged and tracked to determine if they should be censored. The lawsuit’s key point is that the said projects and people behind them worked in collusion with the federal government in order to censor political speech and, other than on Twitter, this was allegedly also happening on Facebook and YouTube.

What these groups were trying to achieve was to stifle what the plaintiffs considered legitimate political speech around content related to the US 2020 election, (by preventing conservative voices from questioning its integrity), and issues like Covid vaccines and pandemic mandates, the non-profit explained.

The lawsuit accuses US national security officials operating on the federal level of involvement in coming up with this huge surveillance operation – for the purpose of evading First Amendment speech protections, which the government cannot – if it is acting within the confines of the Constitution – do on its own.

However, AFL noted, if the allegations from the lawsuit are proven to be correct – this behavior will have represented “an overt, intentional, and explosive violation of the Constitution at the hands of the government.” The nonprofit’s President Stephen Miller referred to the lawsuit as a “landmark” moment in the fight against “the censorship-industrial complex.” And it has taken root and is developing under the guise of combating misinformation – while instead producing censorship and deplatforming.”

Results from exams administered in the spring of 2022 offer a window into the state of academic performance in social studies following pandemic disruptions to learning, a bleak look regarding the level of understanding of the nation’s history, government and democratic processes.”
