Sweet Peas

The colorful and fragrant sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus) is a favorite plant for informal cottage gardens and is easy to grow. It is most often seen trained up trellises or fences, but sweet peas grow beautifully in pots where it spills over the sides. They are climbing plants that bear profuse clusters of spring and early summer flowers in a wide variety of colors, including red, pink, blue, white, and lavender. Sweet pea flowers resemble fringed butterflies, while their sturdy stems appear to be folded. Plant your sweet peas in late winter or early spring. Sweet peas provide beautiful color in garden spaces, but beware because they are toxic to humans and pets.

About Sweet Pea Flowers

Sweet pea (Lathyrus odoratus), is a climbing annual member of the legume genus. Originating in the southwest of Italy and the islands of the Mediterranean, sweet pea has been cultivated for use in gardens since the 17th century.3 It reached its modern form under the work of Scottish nurseryman Henry Eckford, who developed dozens of cultivars during the late 1800s.

Sweet Pea Care

Sweet peas lend a cottage feel to gardens. For many of us, fast-growing sweet peas are an instant nostalgic reminder of the beautiful, rambunctious old-fashioned gardens. These vintage varieties were selected for their vibrant colors and intense fragrance. Modern sweet pea cultivars come in almost every color except yellow, but not all of the newer sweet pea varieties are fragrant. The mature size will depend on the variety you choose to grow, but expect the vines to stretch to at least 6 to 8 feet tall. They are often grown on bamboo tripods, but typically they are grown along a trellis or fence for support.

Planting and Soil

Plant sweet pea in the late winter and early spring. Sow three seeds together about a foot between groups of seeds. Plant sweet pea seeds about 1 inch down in the soil. For better blooms, work compost into the soil about six weeks before planting the seeds. Compost will also improve poor soil.

Sweet peas prefer rich but well-drained soil. A slightly alkaline soil pH (about 7.5) is ideal.

Light

Sweet peas thrive in full sun, although in warmer climates they do well in a location that receives a bit of shade in the heat of the afternoon.

Water

Sweet peas need weekly watering, to keep the soil moist during the growing season. Check the soil by placing your finger an inch into the soil. If it’s moist, there’s no need to water the plant but if it’s dry, it’s time to give the plant a drink.

Temperature and Humidity

Because sweet peas originated in the Mediterranean, they can handle a rare chill but do best if they’re planted after the last frost and in warmer temperatures in USDA zones 3-8. Sweet pea seedlings can tolerate a light frost, but the plants dislike extremely hot temperatures. Plant early to enjoy the blooms before they wither in the heat.

Fertilizer

During the growing season, apply fertilizer for sweet peas monthly. Choose a fertilizer high in potassium, such as a tomato fertilizer. Adding a bit of blood meal to the soil is thought to help keep the stems long and suitable for cutting.

Types of Sweet Peas

‘Old fashioned’:Sweet peas labeled old fashioned should be very fragrant.

Spencer cultivars:These are especially hardy vines with striking coloring, but not all of them are particularly fragrant.

‘Bijou Group’: This is a sweetly scented dwarf variety suitable for containers.

Pruning

To increase branching, which produces more flowering stems, pinch the growing tips back 1 inch when the plant reaches 4 inches tall.3 The more you cut the flowers, the more blooms you should get, so don’t hesitate to bring some bouquets indoors. Deadhead the spent flowers to encourage continued blooming. For Lathyrus odoratus annuals, you do not need to do anything to the plant when sweet peas have finished flowering.

How to Grow Sweet Pea From Seed

Sweet peas are usually direct sown. To assist germination, seeds should be scarified by nicking and/or soaking in water for several hours to soften the seed coating.4

Seed can be started outdoors, as soon as the ground has warmed to about 50 degrees Fahrenheit and is not too wet. In the South, you may have better luck seeding sweet peas in the fall to grow into winter.

You can get a jump start on the season by starting seed indoors, about four to five weeks before your last frost date. They will be easier to transplant if you start them in peat pots. When you are ready to transplant, pinch any flowers or buds off that may have formed, which will encourage root development. They like cool soil, so a thick layer of mulch around the plants may help sweet peas thrive.

When the plants reach about 4 inches tall in the garden, pinch the seedlings to encourage strong side shoots.3 Sweet pea vines have tendrils and will attach themselves to almost any type of support that has meshing or strings.

  1. Lovely flowers – love their little bonnet shaped blooms!

Their cousin – English garden peas – only grow in the mildest part of spring and early summer down here in the Deep South – we only have a short season – before the heat and humidity set in – that we can grow English peas. Wonder if the flowering peas can take hotter weather?

This will be a Mohs procedure, where they check to see if they get it all out before they close it up. So I take coke, snacks, books and stay a while.

              1. Get it done this time, ok? I don’t want you to have to go thru anything like I have; admittedly, tho, the location made mine much more difficult – I can feel the skin pulling and it’s very tight and tingly in that area, with occasional twinges of pain.

              2. Oh, yeah – all the way to the bone but don’t forget – it was smack dab center on my shin so not much meat there anyway and the bottom edge was into my ankle scar from when I was burned as a child with hot coffee (none of which I remember). I could see 2+ inches of bone and the second they took out the stitches, it popped open. So there was about a half-inch gap that had to fill in and heal over.

              3. It was a progression over years. I first noticed the spot way back in 2005 – a doctor looked at it and said she thought it looked like eczema. It would get itchy and puffy now and then when it was hot. It wasn’t until I bought this place and started re-doing the landscaping that I first began having issues – I kept hitting that spot with garden tools, a rock would fly up from the weed eater and hit just THAT spot and it would bleed. That continued for a couple of years before I finally decided to get it looked at. So, this was on me for not doing something sooner.

            2. my mom just told us this weekend my sister in law has skin cancer. we knew she had it on the bridge of her nose, but my mom said she has it on her shoulders and spreading across her upper back.
when my brother first introduced her to my mom, my mom thought she was a black lady–she was that dark. but she just loved to lay out in the sun. She laid out on her roof on a blanket and then after they married, she got a tanning bed. even now, in her late 60’s, she still lays out in the afternoons.

              2. Well, at least I learned my lesson on that one altho, tbh, I simply didn’t have time to lay out in the sun like I did as a teen-ager. My a-Mom and I always used the baby oil with iodine in it – we were always very tan in the summer. I’ll sunburn but it turns to tan overnight – I’ve peeled a few times on my shoulders but especially my legs – fell asleep next to the pool at a hotel in FL and they got badly burned (including the leg with the skin cancer🤔🙄🙄😏😏🙁🙁) Other than that, I never had much problems with sunburn. My birth Dad had very dark skin, we’ve always speculated there was some Indian blood in there.

              1. IDK but, considering the location and constant pulling on the skin, it really doesn’t surprise me. The nerves in the center still haven’t grown back yet either – it is still numb and that extends an inch or so on either side. I really should have had the skin graft but I still don’t regret that – I would probably still be waiting for THAT to heal, too! LOL

I have experience with seed from @reneesgarden, and wild success on horse fencing.
Once when a crop was in full bloom, a man knocked on my door and asked if he could pick a few for his wife, as she loved their smell. But every time he found them, they had no smell.
I went out to the fence with him and cut a huge bouquet for him. This was enormously satisfying, for he thanked me profusely. This went on for several years w this man. AH, the gifts that keep on giving!

    below freezing here this morning!
I brought home a quilt my mother in law made for my son (which he left at my mom’s when he was staying there.) going to try washing it this morning.
My mother in law made quilts for all the grandchildren, but never gave them to the kids while she was alive. Then when she passed, they all seemed to want one particular quilt and didn’t want the ones she made expressly for them. sigh…but a lot of time and effort went into those quilts.

Tucker only gave us crumbs of TRUTH for years. Amazing what 20 million dollars a year will do to a person. Gives us small nuggets of truth and go on to the next small nugget of truth.

Now that he’s no longer controlled opposition lets see if he has the appetite to tell us the whole TRUTH!

  11. so they are offering to opt out of mother’s day promotions, but not pride month promos…seems unfair…
    entire article
WASHINGTON (TND) — A bevy of major retail companies have been giving their customer bases the ability to opt out of any Mother’s Day-related emails and promotions, drawing a fierce wave of backlash.

“Can we opt out of Pride Month spam too?” conservative political commentator Charlie Kirk tweeted.

The Left’s war on womanhood, motherhood and childhood continues to gather force. Every one of these brands have been captured by the radical anti-women anti-family left,” Stephen Miller, the founder of conservative legal group America First Legal, said.

The brands which have reportedly sent messages to their customers giving them the opportunity to stay away from any Mother’s Day-themed content include, among others, Kay Jewelers, a subsidiary of Signet Jewelers, DoorDash, Fry’s Food Store, a subsidiary of Kroger Family Companies, Etsy, Levi Strauss & Co. and Nestle’s Nespresso.

Some people are lauding the companies for the move to let customers opt out of Mother’s Day messaging, arguing it is meant to protect those who recently lost a parent.

“Props to Hallmark,” writer Michele Wojciechowski tweeted. “They sent me an email giving me the option to opt-out of Mother’s Day emails/texts. I did. That was really cool of them, as I miss my Mom so much, and getting emails to remind me rips my heart out all over again.”

However, even those not necessarily against the opt-out feature for Mother’s Day found problems with the messaging it expressed.

The problem lies when the company starts singling out particular topics to appease tiny segments of its consumers without offering opportunities to opt out of other niche topics,” attorney Kelvin Chew tweeted. “It becomes a clear signal of political alignment.”

The National Desk (TND) reached out to all of the companies mentioned in this article for comment, but did not obtain on-the-record responses from any of them prior to publication.

There has been thousands of comments here esp. since Tucker’s firing. Don’t know if this has been said or not but here is what I am thinking.

Fox ‘s settlement with Dominion is very suspicious. It is just another way for Dominion to load up on cash before the 2024 presidential election so they can cheat. Dominion could not afford to go through with that lawsuit. It would have exposed all the corruption.

Dominion would have been ineffective without the cash influence from Rupert Murdoch. But they need Dominion for 2024 or PDJT would win.

We must stop Dominion, Ballot harvesting, and keep the left from cheating in WI., MI., PA., GA., AZ., and NV. STOP this cheating and PDJT will win hands down. We are to spread out by design and not concentrating on priorities.

  14. Read this yesterday – reminds me our Christian conservative blog community.

The Church – R. C. Sproul’s Introduction to Ephesians in the ESV Study Bible.

“The focus of Ephesians is the mystery of the church.

The church is God’s new humanity, a colony where the Lord of history has established a foretaste of the renewed unity and dignity of the human race (1:10-14, 2:11-22, 3:6, 9-11, 4:1-6:9).

The church is a community where God’s power to reconcile people to Himself is experienced and shared in transformed relationships (2:1-10, 4:1-16, 4:32-5:2, 5:22-6:9).

It is a new temple, a building of people, grounded in the sure revelation of what God has done in history (2:19-22, 3:17-19).

The church is an organism where power and authority are exercised after the pattern of Christ (1:22, 5:25-6:9.

The church is an outpost in a dark world (5:3-17), looking for the day of final redemption. Above all, the church is the bride preparing for the approach of her lover and husband (5:22-32)’

Our Take: “I use CNN’s framing of Tucker Carlson’s firing on purpose, as I feel it’s a great example of the sort of pincer move the Media Industrial Complex seem to be caught in regarding the ‘departure’ of the most popular talking head—and one whose rhetoric has slid increasingly further into America First territory—in the United States.

Like many of my peers, I think the Net Effects of the Tucker news are going to be fascinating to behold. Not only was he the most-watched host on legacy cable news, he was by an almost comically-wide margin, largely because of his willingness to touch subject matter (Ukraine-Russia, Petrodollar, Money Laundering) others refused to.

Outs FOX to ‘Normie’ MAGA viewers still bestowing misplaced loyalty to a network that provided Narrative Shielding to the Election Fraud machine by calling Arizona for Biden on 11/3/20 and settling with Dominion for $800 Million. I couldn’t find a silicon jello mold the right size anywhere so, as I was wandering in WM looking for something, I spied a package of 3 of the aluminum foil round pans, 10″ around – perfect!!! Put together a combo of bungees, hooks and snaps, with a metal pie pan upside down on top; remember the yellow and red squeeze bottles FF joints used to have on the tables for mustard and ketchup? I have a set of those I took from the Legion when it closed; I took the yellow one, since I never use mustard anyway, snipped off the top of the spout so it’s bigger and filled it with grape jelly. Works perfectly! One bottle fills the bottom just right, which is just under one full jar, and it fits thru the holes in the cage much easier than a tablespoon! Yeah! No, I’ve not seen any Orioles yet but the finches and sparrows like it, too.

I’ve also been doing some research on keeping the squirrels off of the suet. I’m going to buy suet with capsaician (chili powder) in it – the birds can’t taste it but the squirrels hate it. If I can’t find it, I will sprinkle them with chili powder all over the outside of each cake. The first couple of tastes should put the squirrels off, hopefully. Saw a Cardinal a little while ago.

  21. Well, looky here….the POS involved with the PV coup is on the ConRon train!!!

EXCERPT: “Vish Burra released texts on Thursday that showed Matthew Tyrmand calling for James O’Keefe and Vish to be jailed. Tyrmand was reportedly one of the leaders of the Project Veritas Coup that ousted James O’ Keefe, PV’s founder, from the organization. Tyrmand is also known to be in Ron DeSantis’ inner political circle.

Vish Burra released a screenshot of a message from Tyrmand that read, “Vish, Bannon and Jok (James O’Keefe) can share a jail cell in a federal work camp one day soon.” Vish tweeted above the screenshot, “People think I’m just picking on Ratt Turdmand @MatthewTyrmand for clicks. No. I can’t stay silent and not expose the MALICIOUS INTENT he has in his heart for myself, my friends, my mentors, and @JamesOKeefeIII, the guy he coup’d under false pretenses of fiduciary duty.”
    —————–
Tyrmand is an outspoken DeSantis supporter who spends much of his time attacking Trump supporters on Twitter. Tyrmand is also one of the coup’s leaders who ousted James O’ Keefe from Project Veritas. Long considered untrusty and suspiciously close to foreign governments, Tyrmand has recently been spending time in Poland.

Vish teased that he would be releasing more Matthew Tyrmand messages soon, adding that a string of messages he has on file from Tyrmand is “UNHINGED.”

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) quietly urged the Biden administration to grant taxpayer dollars to a climate coalition that includes a group whose head is the campaign treasurer for the West Virginia Democrat, records show.

Manchin signaled support in an October 2021 letter to the Commerce Department’s assistant secretary for economic development, Alejandra Castillo, for the West Virginia-based Appalachian Climate Technology Now coalition to receive $100 million through President Joe Biden’s American Rescue Plan, a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill signed in March of that year. Jack Rossi, the head of an economic development group in the coalition called the Charleston Area Alliance, also happens to be the treasurer for Manchin’s Senate campaign, according to campaign finance disclosures.
