Tigers…They’re GRRRRREAT

I found an interesting article about tigers on the FactSite!

The Latin name for the tiger is ‘Panthera tigris‘.

They can live up to 26 years in captivity and in the wild.

Tigers prefer to inhabit forests, grasslands and mangrove swamps.

There are six distinctive tigers: Bengal, Indochinese, Malayan, Siberian, South China and Sumatran.

White tigers are caused by recessive genes and inbreeding.

There are as few as 30 Golden Tigers in captivity.

There are three extinct breeds: Bali, Caspian and Javan.

They can measure up to 11ft, including tail.

They can weigh up to 670lbs.

The stripes that a tiger has are as unique as human fingerprints.

Tigers are generally solitary creatures, but are seen as highly social able.

They have a great fondness for water and are very strong swimmers.

Tigers feast on many animals, depending on their territory. These include: antelope, boar, buffalo, camel, fish and horse.

Interestingly, a tiger can go two weeks without feeding.

They can gorge up to 75lbs of flesh in one sitting.

A tiger’s method of killing prey is to stalk it, before ambushing and overpowering it, before biting.

Human behavior can make the tiger feel threatened and attack humans. These are known as ‘man eaters’.

They can make horizontal leaps of up to 33ft.

Usually, in a litter of cubs, there are up to three, but as many as six can be born.

After fourteen days, the cubs will open their eyes.

A cub can take up to two-and-a-half years to separate from its mother.

Tigers are heavily endangered.

They are hunted for fur, meat, medicine and sport.

Save China’s Tigers is a conservation group, which is extremely successful at breeding and reintroducing tigers to the wild.

The Bengal tiger is the national animal of Bangladesh and India.

They are one of the Chinese Zodiac animals, depicting wood.

In Asian folklore, the weretiger is seen as a horrific and terrifying creature, replacing the werewolf.

Shere Khan was a deadly tiger in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book (1894).

The breakfast cereal Frosted Flakes is sponsored by Tony the Tiger, who claims, “They’re grrrreat!”

Siegfried and Roy, the magical entertainers, closed their show after a confused seven year old tiger bit Roy’s neck and attempted to treat him like a cub.

  1. A childhood story comes to mind – about a little boy in India named Sambo….who tricked the scary tigers into chasing each other around a tree so fast they melted and turned into Tiger Butter that he put on his pancakes!

I used to want some Tiger Butter for my pancakes.

Now they make candy called Tiger Butter:

  2. Tigers are beautiful animals, hence, the 3 latch-hook tigers I have hanging on my wall. BTW, the guy who was the voice of Tony The Tiger is from Norfolk…..there is a small display at the museum there.

EXCERPT: “For those outside of Norfolk, there’s a good chance you’ve never heard the name Thurl Ravenscroft. But there’s a significantly better chance you’ve heard his voice — many times and as many characters, in films and TV shows, commercials and popular music. The Norfolk native with the basso profundo voice struck a note that resonated for much of the 20th century.

You’re probably most familiar with his work as the voice of Kellogg’s Frosted Flakes spokesman Tony the Tiger. Ravenscroft started roaring his “Grrrrreeeat!” catchphrase in the early ’50s and continued voicing the character almost until his death in 2005. But Ravenscroft’s contributions can be heard across thousands of works.

“What made Thurl so unique was his wide-ranging talent,” said Keith Scott, an Australian voice actor in animated films who is writing a book on the history of the great American theatrical cartoon voice actors, which includes Ravenscroft. “He was gifted with an amazingly rich voice, which he was putting to use from a very early age.”

Ravenscroft did an awful lot. He was the singer of “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch.” He voiced the pig in “Mary Poppins,” Monstro the whale in “Pinocchio,” Kirby the vacuum cleaner in “The Brave Little Toaster” and Captain the horse in “101 Dalmatians.” His singing can be heard in “Dumbo,” “Cinderella,” “Peter Pan,” “Lady and the Tramp,” “South Pacific,” “The Jungle Book” and “Sleeping Beauty.”

As a part of the quartets the Sportsmen and the Mellomen, he sang alongside such artists as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley, Doris Day and Rosemary Clooney. He sang in “Looney Tunes” cartoons. He sang for various attractions at Disneyland and Disney World. In fact, his likeness can be seen (and voice heard) as one of the singing busts in the “Haunted Mansion” ride. The bust is sometimes mistaken for Walt Disney, a man whom Ravenscroft knew well.

With the new “Grinch” movie in theaters and the sequel to “Mary Poppins” opening later this month, it marks a good time to explore the extraordinary life and work of a Nebraska man with a peculiar name and an unforgettable voice.
    * * *
The early years: Born on Feb. 6, 1914, in Norfolk, Ravenscroft attended Norfolk High School, where his voice became “The Voice.” He was the tenor lead in the school musical his junior year, and the bass lead his senior year. “It just dropped,” Ravenscroft said of his voice in a 1983 interview with the Los Angeles Times. “I didn’t go through the breaking and stuff. It just fell.” Shortly after Ravenscroft graduated in 1932, his father encouraged him to move to Los Angeles to go to art school. While at college, Ravenscroft quickly revealed a flair for entertainment and a great sense of humor.

Before long, friends started asking him if he’d ever considered going into show business.”

      1. hey there!
Thanks so much for taking care of things here!!
I got 4 bags and about 5 boxes of garbage out of her upstairs–so that part was a success…but the neighbor didn’t answer her phone all weekend. mom left messages that we wanted her to come down and talk…but nope.

              1. it is sad. I tried to convince Mom to try the service they have for seniors who don’t drive, but she wouldn’t hear of it.
we discussed changing her locks. she thinks that might be a good idea, but again it would alienate this “friend” so she has to discuss it with my brother before she makes any decision…sigh.

              2. this was supposed to be a “temporary” thing since my SIL is old enough to retire. she was supposed to then take over the responsibility of getting Mom to appts and shopping. but she decided to receive SS and keep working so she could buy a new car (she gets a new one every 3 years), replace her kitchen countertops (the third time since they bought the house) and get new living room furniture (every 5 years since my brother met her). sigh
they live 5 minutes from Mom and can’t seem to find the time to do things for her anymore.

              3. Sis and I ran into the same thing when Mom had CV – the “boys” didn’t agree to the Zelenko protocol so she wouldn’t push for it either. “Whatever Jerry says….” SPIT, SPIT, SPIT!!!

she looked at me and said I had no idea…LOL

  4. My tigers….this first one I did the last month I was waiting for HB to arrive…I didn’t have a vehicle and was bored so I walked to a nearby shopping center to a drug store and found this latch-hook kit on sale.

These 2 I did after I bought my house here, in the winter – all three are hanging in my hallway:
