Today is the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination and I found an article on the History.com website detailing some little-known facts about that horrible event.

Booth initially planned to kidnap Lincoln.

After meeting with Confederate spies in the summer of 1864, Booth spearheaded a plot to abduct Lincoln, bring him to the Confederate capital of Richmond, Virginia, and use him as a bargaining chip to secure the release of rebel prisoners. On March 17, 1865, Booth and his fellow conspirators hid along a country road in Washington, D.C., intending to commandeer the presidential carriage that was scheduled to carry Lincoln to a matinee performance of a play at Campbell Hospital to benefit wounded soldiers. Lincoln, however, had a change of plans and never showed. Some of the co-conspirators abandoned the plot thereafter, and Booth soon had a change of plans as well. After the fall of Richmond and Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrender at Appomattox, he decided to kill, rather than kidnap, Lincoln with help from the remaining co-conspirators. 

Ulysses S. Grant was originally scheduled to be at Lincoln’s side.

Just days after accepting Lee’s surrender, the Union general accepted Lincoln’s invitation to attend “Our American Cousin” at Ford’s Theatre on the evening of April 14, 1865. The general’s wife, however, had recently been the victim of Mary Todd Lincoln’s acid tongue and wanted no part of a night on the town with the first lady. Grant backed out, citing the couple’s desire to travel to New Jersey to see their children. Lincoln had a surprisingly difficult time finding a replacement. Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, Speaker of the House Schuyler Colfax and even son Robert Todd Lincoln turned down the tickets before Clara Harris, daughter of New York Senator Ira Harris, and her fiancé, Major Henry Rathbone, accepted.

Lincoln’s murder was part of a larger plot to decapitate the government.

Booth and his conspirators plotted to not only kill Lincoln, but Grant, Secretary of State William Seward and Vice President Andrew Johnson. Grant’s unexpected departure removed him as a target, and George Atzerodt lost his nerve and failed to follow through on his assignment to slay Johnson at his residence in the Kirkwood House hotel. At the same time Booth shot Lincoln, Lewis Powell stormed Seward’s house and repeatedly stabbed the cabinet member, who was bedridden after a near-fatal carriage accident. Seward somehow survived the savage attack.

The lives of the Lincolns’ guests at Ford’s Theatre ended in tragedy as well.

After shooting Lincoln, Booth slashed Rathbone’s left arm from his elbow to his shoulder. Rathbone recovered from the stab wounds but not from the trauma of that night. After marrying Harris—who also happened to be his stepsister—in 1867, he grew increasingly erratic and perhaps suffered from post-traumatic stress. Two days before Christmas in 1883, he fatally shot and stabbed his wife before stabbing himself repeatedly in a suicide attempt. Once again, however, he survived the knife wounds. Rathbone lived out the remaining three decades of his life in an asylum for the criminally insane. (The fourth member of the presidential box on the night of the assassination, Mary Todd Lincoln, was herself institutionalized in 1875.)

Lincoln’s death was not universally mourned in the North.

As Martha Hodes recounts in her book Mourning Lincoln, some Northerners who thought Lincoln too dictatorial and some Radical Republicans who thought him too lenient toward the Confederacy welcomed news of his assassination. After a meeting of Radical Republicans hours after the shooting, Indiana Congressman George Julian recorded in his diary that the “universal feeling among radical men here is that his death is a godsend.” Michigan Senator Zachariah Chandler wrote to his wife that God had permitted Lincoln to live only “as long as he was useful and then substituted a better man (Johnson) to finish the work.”

Mary Todd Lincoln thought the vice president was involved in the conspiracy.

Hours before shooting Lincoln, Booth had mysteriously called on Johnson at the Kirkwood House and left a handwritten calling card that read: “Don’t wish to disturb you. Are you at home? J. Wilkes Booth.” The first lady, as she wrote to a friend, believed “that miserable inebriate Johnson had cognizance of my husband’s death. Why was that card of Booth’s found in his box? Some acquaintance certainly existed.” Atzerodt’s failure to attack the vice president was even seen by some as proof of Johnson’s complicity.

Lincoln and Booth had a previous encounter at Ford’s Theatre.

On November 9, 1863, the Lincolns watched a performance of “The Marble Heart” starring John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theatre. Mary Clay, one of Lincoln’s guests, recounted after the assassination that “twice Booth in uttering disagreeable threats in the play came very near and put his finger close to Mr. Lincoln’s face.” After Booth gestured menacingly toward the president a third time, Clay said, “Mr. Lincoln, he looks as if he meant that for you.” The president replied, “Well, he does look pretty sharp at me, doesn’t he?”

Lincoln’s deathbed quickly became a tourist attraction.

In the hours after Lincoln died in the back bedroom of William Petersen’s boardinghouse across the street from Ford’s Theatre, souvenir hunters ransacked the property and snatched numerous relics of the martyred president. Deciding to cash in himself, Petersen began to charge admission to the hundreds of curiosity-seekers who came each day to see Lincoln’s bloody deathbed, which incredibly continued to be slept in by tenant William Clark each night. Petersen fell into financial difficulty in 1871 and died after being found on the lawn of the Smithsonian Institution following an opium overdose.

Robert Todd Lincoln was in close proximity to two other presidential assassinations.

Sixteen years after being bedside for his father’s death, Robert Todd Lincoln was serving as President James A. Garfield’s secretary of war when he witnessed Charles Guiteau fire two gunshots that mortally wounded the chief executive inside a Washington, D.C., train station. On September 6, 1901, Lincoln arrived in Buffalo to attend the Pan-American Expo at the invitation of William McKinley only to learn that the president had just been shot. Lincoln visited McKinley’s bedside several times before the president ultimately succumbed to his wounds.

Another deadly tragedy struck Ford’s Theatre during the funeral of Booth’s brother.

When John T. Ford attempted to reopen Ford’s Theater to performances on July 10, 1865, Stanton, who was “opposed to its ever being again used as a place of public amusement,” dispatched heavily armed soldiers to prevent the show from going on. The federal government eventually purchased Ford’s Theatre for $100,000, gutted the auditorium and converted the building into war department offices. On June 9, 1893, at the precise moment when funeral services for Edwin Booth began inside New York’s Church of the Transfiguration, three floors of Ford’s Theatre collapsed into the basement and killed 22 federal workers.

    we saw the chemtrails AGAIN last night–perhaps they are a nightly thing over that area…i dunno for sure.
    the sky has wispy muted colored clouds near the mountain tops, but above is clear.
    we kicked on the air conditioning for the first time yesterday afternoon for a bit…really early for us.

    1. Morning, Pat! Interesting info about Ford et al. Still a bit chilly here this morning at 49 – expecting rain later. I often have to turn on my A/C sooner than most because the house is so low, with a black roof, but I close up all the curtains and drapes, windows and doors early in the am and it stays pretty cool. It hit 90 outside yesterday but was still very comfortable inside w/o a/c. Had we not had the high winds, tho, that may have been different.

    The Ukraine government, headed by Volodymyr Zelensky, has been using American taxpayers’ funds to pay dearly for the vitally needed diesel fuel that is keeping the Ukrainian army on the move in its war with Russia. It is unknown how much the Zelensky government is paying per gallon for the fuel, but the Pentagon was paying as much as $400 per gallon to transport gasoline from a port in Pakistan, via truck or parachute, into Afghanistan during the decades-long American war there.

    What also is unknown is that Zelensky has been buying the fuel from Russia, the country with which it, and Washington, are at war, and the Ukrainian president and many in his entourage have been skimming untold millions from the American dollars earmarked for diesel fuel payments. One estimate by analysts from the Central Intelligence Agency put the embezzled funds at $400 million last year, at least; another expert compared the level of corruption in Kiev as approaching that of the Afghan war, “although there will be no professional audit reports emerging from the Ukraine.”

    Samuel Brinton, 35, who uses they/them pronouns was issued their sentence Wednesday in Las Vegas, Nevada, eight months after they grabbed a passenger’s bags inside Harry Reid International Airport.

    Brinton was facing misdemeanor theft charges, which amount to less than $1,200 in stolen items. They had originally faced a felony theft charge since police said the amount stolen was $3,670.

  26. I spoke with my mom last night and she mentioned that my aunt told her some banks are closing and you may not be able to get your money out.
    my mom is older, not into politics and doesn’t follow much national news. we told her we heard about that and are “looking into it”.
    anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this and her? I don’t want to overwhelm her with things she wouldn’t understand at this point, but I don’t want to brush her off either.

    1. Perhaps gathering some info on her bank specifically – it’s background, who actually owns the bank, etc., etc. so you have a better idea whether that bank in particular is in any danger of failing? What bank does she do business with?

        1. You have the world at your fingertips, Pat! Look it up on-line! Search on the name of the town and ask for banks serving that area. That will at least give you a starting point. Look up the addresses then plug the address into Google Earth – you can get a bird’s eye view of the area, may even show your Mom’s own house! Find the one nearest to your Mom. It shouldn’t be that hard to do.

            1. I think how much you actually tell her will depend on what you find out about the bank in question. If you don’t find anything really serious, like direct involvement of Black Rock or something along those lines, there may be no need to get into any of it. Just tell her it is big, multi-national banks that are having to make changes and won’t affect her, maybe? I mean, you don’t want her worrying about what may or may not be coming down the pike, right? We don’t KNOW what’s going to happen yet.

    The team named the hole, which they describe as a hot spring, ‘Pythias Oasis’ after the ancient Greek oracle who ‘prophesized’ with the assistance of the mind-altering gases rising from a hot spring.

    ‘It seems equally hallucinatory to find a spring of low-salinity, high-temperature, mineral-rich water flowing from the seafloor 3,280 feet below the surface off the coast of Oregon,’ researchers shared in a statement.

    A robotic diver uncovered the hole in a 2015 survey when sonar images captured bubbles rising from the seafloor.

    Data showed liquid from the spring was coming from the plate boundary line and appeared warmer than the surrounding area.

    Co-author Evan Solomon, a UW associate professor of oceanography who studies seafloor geology, said in a statement: ‘They explored in that direction and what they saw was not just methane bubbles, but water coming out of the seafloor like a firehose.

    ‘That’s something that I’ve never seen and, to my knowledge, has not been observed before.’

    Observations later determined the leaking fluid was 16 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the surrounding seawater and was coming directly from the Cascadia megathrust, where temperatures are an estimated 300 to 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

    ‘Loss of fluid from the offshore megathrust interface through these strike-slip faults is important,’ the statement notes, ‘because it lowers the fluid pressure between the sediment particles and hence increases the friction between the oceanic and continental plates.’

    The Cascadia megathrust spans several major metropolitan areas, including Seattle and Portland, Oregon, but also touches parts of Northern California and Vancouver Island in Canada.

    Iatrogenesis is the causation of a disease, a harmful complication, or other ill effect by any medical activity, including diagnosis, intervention, error, or negligence. First used in this sense in 1924, the term was introduced to sociology in 1976 by Ivan Illich, alleging that industrialized societies impair quality of life by overmedicalizing life.

    The first part of the word, “iatro,” comes from the Greek word “iatros” for medical or medicinal, while “genic” comes from “genes” which means origin. Iatrogenic death occurs when people die due to errors or negligence by doctors. The reported yearly death rate from medical error is over 120,000. This compares to around 44,000 deaths from motor vehicles and only a few hundred from commercial aviation. You should be far more worried about dying in a hospital than from an airplane crash.

    Dr. Harvey Fineberg, M.D., president of the Institute of Medicine and former dean of the Harvard School of Public Health, has said that between 30% and 40% of our entire healthcare expenditure is paying for fraud and unnecessary treatment. According to Dr. Barbara Starfield of the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health, 250,000 deaths per year are caused by medical errors. A study by Harvard University professor Lucian Leape found that one million patients are injured by errors during hospital treatment annually, with some 120,000 deaths. One out of every 200 patients in hospitals in New York State had an iatrogenic death. Less than 10% of the medical mistakes are reported to hospital authorities.

    So what’s the cause of these death rates from adverse events? Statistics show that the average doctor is approximately 24 times more deadly than the average gun owner, and that an average doctor has a 17% chance of killing at least one patient, every single year.

    Consider George Washington. Throughout his life, he only used what is now known as “alternative” medicine, until the last day of his life. He was apparently in so much pain that he finally allowed doctors to try a new “scientific” procedure on him called “bloodletting.” It took them less than 24 hours to finish him off with their quackery.

    Just because something is considered to be “common medical practice” doesn’t mean that it’s been proven effective. The Office of Technology Assessment (OTA) was created by Congress to analyze scientific and technical issues in America. From 1972 to 1995, the OTA conducted studies on health care and related topics, but they crossed the line when they produced an “unfavorable” report on the US healthcare system. As a result, the OTA was promptly disbanded. Why? because the government doesn’t tend to fund organizations that are honest.

    In 1978, the OTA issued a major research report that concluded: “…only 10 to 20 percent of all procedures currently used in medical practices have been shown to be efficacious by controlled trial.” This means that between 80% and 90% of what doctors do to you is scientifically unproven guesswork. By the government’s own definition, according to this OTA report, the majority of conventional medicine is literally modern “quackery.”

    Care (not treatment) is the answer. Drugs, surgery and hospitals become increasingly dangerous for chronic disease cases. Facilitating our God-given healing capacity by improving our diet, exercise, and lifestyle is the key.

    Bottom line: Unless you really need immediate critical care, try to avoid doctors and hospitals.”

When a CIA head or a top FBI official does it, it’s just news. In fact, officials talk openly about using “strategic leaks” as a P.R. staple. In a world where media currency is becoming the ultimate power, these people want a monopoly. It’s infuriating.

    EXCERPTS: “I am a physician who stood against the false narratives swirling around Covid and, for a time, it seemed like I lost.

    Before Covid became a public reality, I was working as a successful trauma surgeon and surgical ICU physician in the hospital that had the first diagnosed Covid case in America. I was working as one of the more senior surgeons of a team of 12 surgeons. The hospital and medical community had already been struggling prior to Covid with various departures from reality with narratives including ‘racism everywhere’ and ‘diversity as long as it supports deviancy’, but it wasn’t appearing to dramatically affect patient care.

    In 2018-2019, I stumbled onto a fraud scheme perpetrated by some of the administrative doctors in our hospital that did cause patient harm, so I reported our hospital administration for fraud. I similarly observed and discovered other connected issues that caused patient harm by various other providers that I tried to bring to light in our hospital. I was ‘rewarded’ with 12 complaints filed against me over a two week period, in retaliation. These complaints accused me of breaches of almost every aspect of professional behavior and ethics. They followed one of the administrators sending out an email asking her colleagues to “get rid of Dr. Miller”. None of these allegations stood (they were all false to begin with), and I continued to do my job to the best of my abilities in this hostile situation, but it became increasingly difficult. Eventually, every single complaint was dismissed as unsubstantiated.

    Then, through February and March of 2020, our hospital had a large number of Covid patients including a real upsurge of many sick patients in early March. A couple of weeks later, it hit the news, but only after the virus had passed its inflection point in our hospital and after our healthcare system was not in any threat of having inadequate resources. Things then went completely mad with hype and fear – again, this was after the real infectious surge was passed.

    Suddenly, our hospital outcomes and quality data became hidden and opaque to us. Prior to this, almost all data were openly shared and discussed in quality assurance meetings. The hospital forced upon us a narrative that was pure lunacy and contrary to all available observations and previously available data. A chilling example is the following.

    Then, I watched as every policy, practice and quality metric that makes a trauma and surgical programme have good patient outcomes be undermined or abandoned by my colleagues and hospital administration. I filed countless complaints to our quality department for disgusting breaches of care that were now becoming commonplace. I could not turn my back on my oaths taken to advocate for patients. Between mid-2020 and 2021, following a leak of information from the opaque administration, I learned that our unanticipated morbidity and mortality numbers had more than doubled for indexed trauma patients. It was horribly demoralising to watch.

    After the vaccine was rolled out in late 2020, it became a functional mandate in the broader community, and then definitively mandated by the late summer of 2021. The medical community in the county I was working in (Snohomish, Washington State) started refusing to care for unvaccinated patients except in the hospital setting. I couldn’t believe that patients were banned from accessing basic primary care at first, but then I spoke to a man at my church who was denied both refills of his diabetic medications and treatment for a sinus infection by his primary care provider, all because of his Covid vaccination status. This was so inconceivable that I still didn’t believe it. Even when patients did make it to the hospital, I learned that the physicians and staff in the emergency room were directed to provide a lower tier of medicine to this group of patients. It was less than acceptable, and worse, less dignified, than the care given to any other patients pre- and post- Covid. I had to verify with physician leaders that they approved of this inhumanity. I found out that all the major healthcare systems in the county had agreed to this action, and drove the creation of the policies that demanded physicians act in direct opposition to their oaths. After discovering this, I departed from the medical community in spirit.

    Working with my pastor, we turned our church into a free clinic to care for those ostracised from society. I obtained independent malpractice insurance and we started seeing patients. People were desperate. We didn’t advertise, but there were so many people seeking basic healthcare that we struggled to see everyone. I did my best to see people in their time of need, but it was hard. I was still working in my full-time hospital position. I just didn’t have enough hours in the day. Most of the people I cared for were seen at the church – they were met with maskless smiles, prayer, support and free medical care. Sometimes, people would be waiting in my driveway for me when I arrived home in the early morning after a night shift or late at night after I finished a day shift. What became obvious as the most important thing about our clinic is that our patients needed to be treated as valuable people created in God’s image.

    By March and April of 2022, multiple other clinics in the county began to accept care for most patients, regardless of vaccination status, and so we wound down the free clinic at my church, transitioning people’s care to physicians in established practices who would now agree to deliver appropriate care. As I had been reported to the state (although no formal charges were brought) and I was being pushed out of hospital medicine for practising ethical medicine, I knew it was time to leave Washington State. The message to me was clear: if I stayed, I would have formal investigations that would prohibit me from obtaining a medical licence in another state. My livelihood would be stripped away. So, we sold our homes and boats, liquidated our assets and moved to South Florida in May 2022. I was, and am, bitter at the medical establishment that committed these crimes, so I planned to retire at age 50 with the move and have nothing further to do with the establishment.

    However, after the hurricane came through Florida in the fall of 2022, I started doing volunteer work for hurricane victims. This included some medical relief work. I realised there is still good that can be done in medicine, that people need healthcare providers, and that by nature, I am a healer.

    So, in February of 2023, I returned to practising medicine and started working as a primary care physician at a holistic clinic where no patient is turned away. I discovered that I enjoy being a family physician, too. I lost my prestigious career and my social position, but I did not lose my ethics or integrity. I did not violate my oaths of practice. So, ultimately, I have won. And I’m happy.”

    It will be interesting to see if the Air National guardsman, Jack Teixeira who was allegedly loading classified information onto the internet was also placed in his position by Booz Allen Hamilton.
