Fun Facts About Plants

I found this article –Fun Facts About Plants—and I wanted to share it!

How versatile are plants!? You can eat them, use them in medicine, and they have this magical ability to transform any boring room into a vibrant living space. Not just that, but gardening has been proven to be good for your mental and physical health.

But there’s a whole wide world of plants thriving out there which we know hardly anything about. Just wait till you hear how many plants there are in the ocean.

Like the fact that there’s a plant in Australia called the ‘Suicide Plant’. Anyone who comes in contact with it acquires a certain side effect (which can last for several years) that makes them feel depressed and suicidal. No wonder they say “everything in Australia wants to kill you!”

The intention behind this article is to introduce you to the unexplored, absolutely stunning, almost unbelievable side of the plant kingdom. So, if you want to discover some more plant facts that’ll be perfect for any pub quiz, then keep on reading!

Get ready to learn all about plants!

1. And the award for the longest living organism on planet earth goes to…

A tree! Well, there are several trees in various parts of the world which are 3,000-4,000 years old. But then there’s a bristlecone pine tree located in California which is considered to be the world’s oldest growing tree. This fella is a whopping 5,000 years old! That’s older than the Ancient Egyptians who built the Pyramids.

2. Clonal trees can live for more than 80,000 years

While California’s bristlecone pine tree is an individual organism, there are colonies of trees which are estimated to be over 80,000 years old. One such colony of 50,000 aspen trees is located in the Fishlake National Park in Utah. It’s called Pando, which means ‘I spread’. And those trees really have spread over the years!

3. What about the world’s tallest tree?

Again, a Californian tree. A coastal redwood (Sequoia sempervirens) called Hyperion is considered to be the tallest tree to exist. Its height is 380.1 feet. That’s as tall as a 35-story building! Another interesting fact associated with this 600-year-old tree is that its exact location is kept a secret to protect it from damage.

4. Let’s talk numbers of species

It’s estimated that there are over 400,000 species of plants on our planet. This number is not fixed though since new species are discovered every year. Also, it’s pretty unbelievable to know that 85% of all plant life is found in the oceans. On land, we have just about 15%.

5. So much biodiversity, yet we keep eating just 30 plants

Half of these 400,000 are edible for human consumption. However, we humans tend to eat just 200 plant species (30 plants in their different life forms), ignoring all the rest. Rice, maize, and wheat – these 3 plants alone contribute more than 60% of the calories and proteins we humans obtain from plants.

6. If not eating, are we at least using them as medicines?

It is estimated that more than 50,000 plant species have the potential for being medicinal in nature. But most of these concoctions are traditional medicines, primarily used by the Indian, Chinese, and African medicine systems.

Furthermore, only 1% of rainforest plants have been researched for their medicinal potential. So it’s safe to assume that there’s a whole universe of untapped resources, hidden in those majestic rainforests, just waiting to be discovered.

7. Lost in a jungle? Use plants to navigate

Plants can be used as compasses to navigate through all kinds of terrains. For example, the moss that grows on the tree trunks of northern temperate climates tends to spread more towards the northern side.

Another trick is to analyze the rings on a tree that has been cut down. If the tree is in the northern hemisphere, rings will be thicker on the southern side, and vice versa.

8. Herbs and spices are not the same

Let’s make use of this list of fun facts about plants to burst this bubble of a common misconception – “herbs and spices are the same things”. No, they’re not!

Herbs come from leaves of the plant, while spices primarily come from stems, roots, seeds, berries, or barks.

9. What’s the fastest growing plant?

Any guesses? It’s the bamboo! It’s the fastest-growing plant in the world, and it can grow up to 35 inches in a day! That’s almost 1.5 inches per hour. If we pay close attention, we can actually watch bamboo grow in front of our eyes.

10. Plant kingdom can be surprisingly confusing

Pumpkins and avocados are actually fruits while pineapples are berries. To make things more confusing, rhubarb is a vegetable and cucumber is a fruit too.

And everyone knows tomatoes are fruits right? There’s the famous quote of “knowledge is knowing tomato is a fruit; wisdom is not putting it in a fruit salad…”

11. Grass that’s tall enough to hide a herd of elephants

Found in Africa, elephant grass can grow to up to 15 feet in height. That’s tall enough for native African elephants to hide behind it. However, they also love gorging on this grass, hence the name.

12. And who’s the king of flowers?

That thought to be the Indonesian flower, rafflesia arnoldii. These flowers are considered to be the largest in the world. They can easily be 3.3 feet in diameter.

Another flower called Titan arum, also known as the ‘corpse flower’, can reach up to 15 feet in height. When they bloom they produce a strong smell similar to that of rotting meat. Thus, the name – corpse flower. Lovely.

13. Tell us something about tulips!

There are quite a few plant facts associated with tulip flowers. But our favorite is this one. During the 1600s, these gorgeous flowers used to be more expensive than gold. The craze for tulips was so high in those times that it led to the Dutch economy’s crash. They even have a name for it – tulipomania.

14. Speaking of weird, what about carnivorous plants?

There are about 600 species of plants which are considered to be carnivorous. They eat insects and small animals too. Even figs are carnivorous in nature. When they are pollinated by fig wasps, they trap the poor wasps and eat them. In the Philippines, there’s a carnivorous plant species capable of digesting a full-grown rat, alive!

15. Plants can even recognize their siblings!

Yes, they can! And they even give their siblings preferential treatment by competing less against them for valuable resources such as space for growth.

    1. Good morning! My nights/days are all topsy-turvy at the moment – happens when I change my routine. I woke up at 3 am, dozed until 4 and gave up on more sleep. When I looked outside….sigh….no, we didn’t dodge a bullet! Came back overnight with more snow – wind has blown a layer over my entire patio – and the lights on the flowerbeds are once again buried. Temp has been 1 since I got up and just now dropped to 0. Supposed to have a couple of below-zero nights, then temp pops back up into the 30’s and 40’s. Somewhat windy from the NW, but not very bad, thankfully.

BTW, you know I LOVED this open! Suicide plant….I looked that up, of course.

“Like being burned by hot acid and electrocuted at the same time.” That’s botanist Marina Hurley on what it feels like to touch the gympie gympie. Not that you have to touch it. An extremely fine fuzz of poisonous needles coats the entire plant, and better yet, the things shed like a cat in the summertime. So it’s disturbingly easy to get stung just by standing near them.”

Piper gave me some info on a different browser – been checking it out – based in the Netherlands and truly don’t collect ANY personal info. You can even request that what data they do have is kept on a European server and they also have an e-mail program. This is going on my to-do list but I’ve got to deal with changing banks first – I’ll be damned if I’m going to have an account at a bank based in Canada!!!

EXCERPT: “That high-pitched ringing noise in your ears is the sound of the left realizing what you’ve known since April 2020, that everything they lined up to goose-step for was a betrayal of their fundamental beliefs and concepts.

Cue the “mea culpas”. The only thing more hypocritical than becoming suddenly “self reflective” now would be to continue pretending they were right, so now that the damage is done and the tyranny etched permanently into law and precedent, its’ time for editorials. It’s OK to think now. It’s “safe to dance”.

  6. Missouri AG calls on Gardner to resign…she is a POS
    FTA
Kim Gardner refused to put the man charged with hitting Janae Edmondson back in jail even though he violated the conditions of his bond more than 50 times. The repeat offender went on to hit a Tennessee teenage volleyball player walking in St. Louis City last week — and the young girl lost her legs after she was pinned to another vehicle. The driver NEVER should have been on the street. And Missourians are furious!

Missouri Senate Leader Caleb Rowden called on Kim Gardner to resign today.

And on Wednesday night, Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey gave Kim Gardner until noon tomorrow to resign.

As AG, I want to protect the people of St. Louis, and that includes protecting victims of crime and finding justice for them.

  7. “mission creep” is a nice term for STAY THE HELL IN YOUR OWN LANE BUCKO!
SEC changes rules so entities have to disclose their climate related financial data…
    FTA
The SEC’s proposed rules mandating companies disclose climate-related financial data alongside traditional data “exceeds the SEC’s mission, expertise and authority,” Reps. Patrick McHenry of North Carolina, Bill Huizenga of Michigan and Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina allege in the letter. The letter asks for Gensler to provide estimates for the potential costs of the new rules, a list of all current and former employees who have worked on the rules, and whether the SEC coordinated with outside agencies and NGOs during the rule-making process. (RELATED: Biden Admin Officials Worked Closely With Climate Group Chaired By Massive Dem Donor, Emails Show)

SEC Chair Gary Gensler met with representatives of the Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) in May 2021, roughly nine months before the rules were initially proposed in March 2022, according to documents obtained by the non-profit Energy Policy Advocates through a Freedom of Information Act Request. Members of the TCFD — which is chaired by major Democratic donor and finance mogul Michael Bloomberg and is not considered to be an NGO — appeared to have close relationships with officials at the U.S. Treasury Department, and promoted policies that required the companies disclose climate-related financial data, according to a Daily Caller News Foundation review of additional documents.

Under @GaryGensler’s watch @secgov continues to push a partisan agenda that it has no mandate or authority to pursue. As promised @SenatorTimScott, @patrickMcHenry, & I are conducting oversight to hold these Biden Bureaucrats accountable and standing up for small business! pic.twitter.com/FFa0GcC2c7

    — Rep. Bill Huizenga (@RepHuizenga) February 22, 2023

The proposed rules reportedly generated significant pushback from business interests — more than SEC officials anticipated — who argued that the new rules would be expensive to implement, open to interpretation, and potentially lead to inaccurate reporting of costs. The SEC is reportedly considering scaling back the rules, but the finalized version rules are nonetheless expected to face legal challenges.

“Under your leadership, the SEC has shifted away from its principles-based disclosure regime to a partisan, activist, and prescriptive approach,” the congressmen wrote. “This includes implementing a climate agenda that is outside the scope of its mission and which will have significant economic and political consequences for the Nation and our capital markets.”

The congressmen hope that the letter will help uncover the details of the “bureaucratic mission creep” at the SEC, Huizenga communications director Brian Patrick told the DCNF.

“The SEC has no expertise and no authority in this area yet they proposed an unworkable rule that will negatively impact family farms, businesses large and small, as well as retail investors saving for their future,” Patrick wrote to the DCNF. “This will have a HUGE impact on the entire economy with NO input by those elected to represent citizens.”

  8. this makes no sense to me…why would he move tesla BACK to CA? why not move twitter to Texas?
    entire article

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has announced the company will be moving its global headquarters to California just two years after Tesla fled the Golden State for Austin, Texas.

Tesla will be taking over the lease for the office space of Hewlett Packard’s former headquarters in Palo Alto, Musk said in planned remarks with California Gov. Gavin Newsom after touring the new office with staff.

“This is a poetic transition from the company that founded Silicon Valley to Tesla, and we’re very excited to make this our global engineering headquarters, in California,” Musk told reporters.

Newsom hailed the move as a huge win for California.

“You can’t rest on your laurels. You gotta step up your game, and you gotta invest in your growth engines,” Newsom said. “And I couldn’t be more proud of California’s commitment to support Tesla over the course of the last few decades.”

Newsom added that 44 manufacturing companies in the electric vehicle space are now headquartered in California, but said none of them dominate like Tesla. “And so it’s a point of pride, always has been for me, that Tesla is a California company,” Newsom said.

Musk has not always had a favorable view of California. After the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Musk fought with state authorities — whom he called “fascist” — over the reopening of Tesla’s plant in Fremont, California.

The following year, he moved the company’s headquarters to Texas, which had far more relaxed pandemic policies compared to California, as well as fewer regulations and lower taxes.

“I think California should be cautious about taxes and over regulations going too far,” Musk told CNBC in 2021. “Objectively, Tesla has done nothing but increase its footprint in California. Both in terms of manufacturing and engineering and personnel. Every year we’ve grown our headcount in California without exception.”

The announcement comes just after a California civil rights agency says it has conducted a three-year investigation, documenting hundreds of complaints from Tesla workers regarding the company’s treatment of black workers.

  9. LONG article (which makes it even worse) of fbi behavior that has been downplayed and dismised without sever or lasting penalties. (there are MORE examples at the link)
    FTA
“There’s definitely a sense of entitlement that has seeped into the agency, and too many people are just content to have a gold badge and gun on their hip and not actually do the work that’s required,” Friend said in an interview Wednesday night on the “Just the News, No Noise” television show. “They’re sitting on the shoulders of giants, people that investigated Bonnie and Clyde, Al Capone, terrorist networks, organized crime, and they need to uphold that reputation as opposed to just living on the exhaust fumes.”

Friend said he decided to make the disciplinary reports public in hopes public pressure can encourage reform inside the bureau.

“I’m a believer in radical transparency,” he said. “You get credentials in the FBI. You’re not a secret agent. You’re supposed to present those credentials to anybody upon request. So I think everybody should be held accountable.”

The FBI said it believes the reports published by Just the News show the disciplinary system works even as it seeks to improve from outside advice, including from the Justice Department inspector general.

“The FBI has a well-established and effective disciplinary process, and we remain committed to ensuring it remains fair, transparent, and is consistent with FBI Policy,” the bureau said. “In 2021, The Department of Justice, Office of Inspector General released a report on the FBI’s adjudication process for misconduct investigations and found the FBI generally adjudicated employee misconduct matters consistent with FBI policy.

“The FBI concurred with the OIG’s recommendations for improving transparency and effectiveness and has resolved those issues, as noted in the report.”

One report from April 2017 listed general examples of past FBI misconduct, including one agent dismissed for admitting to having sexually molested his daughter and granddaughter for years. Another acted “as an agent of a foreign government.” One stole drug evidence to feed a heroin addiction, while another employee pulled a gun on a private citizen during an incident of road rage. The female bystander in question was thrown up “against a concrete lane divider, causing temporary loss of consciousness and large contusion.”

Other reports detail an employee who shot and killed his neighbor’s dog and another who was driving drunk — with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit — and killed an 18-year-old in the process. Yet not all of these subjects were said to have served prison time, and some even kept their jobs.

One employee failed to safeguard their weapon by leaving it in their car, where it was later stolen. In addition to violating various rules about how the firearm should have been secured, the agent was supposed to have gotten written approval to store a gun in a vehicle overnight. The punishment: a 3-day suspension and loss of the weapon. Two others who failed to safeguard their weapons in similar ways also received only brief suspensions.

A supervisory employee “hit his minor child” and was caught only after the child’s school “noticed bruises and contacted Child Protective Services.” After OPR discovered the child had “been coached to minimize what happened” and the agent took parenting classes mandated by the bureau, the employee received only a 40-day suspension for “Assault and Battery.”

One employee “seized two thumb drives and notebook from a fugitive during an arrest.” That employee then imaged the thumb drives “without a warrant” and removed a page from the notebook that contained information about another government agent. This resulted in a 5-day suspension.

  14. EXCELLENT News: Nasal Spray PREVENTS SARS-CoV-2 Infection, People Who Don’t Use it At Higer Risk of Infection and Higher Risk of Symptoms if Infected — Prospective, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial show…”

EXCERPT: Finally some excellent news!!! From Dr. McCullough:

“Balmforth et al, conducted a prospective double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of a xylitol based nasal spray in the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infection in exposed healthcare workers in two hospitals in Uttar Pradesh, India. Xylitol is known to have anti-infective and anti-inflammatory properties and is used in XLEAR nasal spray and anti-infective chewing gum to prevent dental caries. Balmforth found that SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed by serology was 71% lower with xylitol compared to placebo [36 cases (13.1%) Vs 97 cases (34.5%); odds ratio [OR] 0.29 (95% CI; 0.18–0.45), p < 0.0001]. Fewer clinical symptoms were also seen in the test group [57 cases (17.6%) vs 112 cases (34.6%); OR 0.40, (95% CI; 0.27–0.59), p < 0.0001]. No harmful effects were associated with xylitol. A smaller study of xylitol nasal spray in mild COVID-19 cases demonstrated that persistent loss of smell may be eliminated with xylitol nasal spray during the acute congestion phase.”

So she called my Sis and asked HER to call me to tell me to call Linda. Problem is, what she is talking about is Medicare Advantage, with which I am already familiar.

When I explained this to Mom, she, of course, got all huffy – “Well, I’m not going to try to help you any more!” That one ended with me screaming “FUCK YOU, MOTHER!” and hanging up. Ah, the joys of being her daughter!!!!

Walgreens said on Friday it does not plan to dispense abortion pills in Kansas after state Attorney General Kris Kobach wrote a letter to the pharmacy warning of legal action if it goes along with President Joe Biden’s abortion-for-all scheme.

In early January, Walgreens became the first pharmacy to announce it would sell the lethal chemical abortion drug mifepristone, in stores and by mail, under new rules by Biden’s Food and Drug Administration, which are intended to kick the door open for dangerous at-home abortions and work around pro-life laws in red states. Mifepristone is part of a two-drug process for killing and expelling a preborn baby from his or her mother’s womb.

Kobach blamed the “ends-justify-the-means” Biden administration for muddying the issue and objected to the drugs being sold in Kansas. “I have become aware of your company’s recently announced plan to provide abortifacients through its mail-order pharmacy business,” Kobach wrote in a letter to Walgreens executive Danielle Gray on Feb. 6. “As the chief law enforcement officer in Kansas, I am writing to advise you that this plan is illegal, and Kansas will not hesitate to enforce the law.”

According to Kobach, Walgreens’ plan violates both federal law and state statute. Kansas statute requires that abortion-inducing drugs such as mifepristone “be given to the patient by or in the same room and in the physical presence of the physician who prescribed, dispensed or otherwise provided the drug or prescription to the patient.” Furthermore, though Biden’s FDA approves of sending mifepristone through the mail for DIY chemical abortions, Kobach notes that under Title 18, Section 1461 of the United States Code, “every article or thing designed, adapted, or intended for producing abortion” is considered “nonmailable matter” and thus cannot be mailed.

“Ordinarily, the national government’s steadfast determination not to enforce the law would be the end of things,” Kobach wrote. “But §1461 is not a normal criminal statute because it can be enforced by an ordinary private-party lawsuit,” meaning, according to the attorney general, that private parties are authorized under Title 18, Section 1964 to sue entities that violate Section 1461, among other statutes.

In response to Kobach’s warning, Gray, the executive vice president of Walgreens Boots Alliance, which owns Walgreens pharmacies, said:

Walgreens does not intend to dispense Mifepristone within your state and does not intend to ship Mifepristone into your state from any of our pharmacies. If this approach changes, we will be sure to notify you.

Former President Donald Trump ordered a “nice array” of McDonald’s for first responders and residents of East Palestine, Ohio. “A new Florida Senate bill would make it illegal to let a dog be in a driver’s lap or stick its head out of a window of a moving car, according to our News 6 partner WJXT-TV. The bill — Senate Bill 932 — would also ban the declawing of cats, and I’m all in on that as well. De-clawing a cat to save your furniture is a cruel and stupid thing to do. Can Americans be bribed with their own money? The powers that be are certainly putting that question to the test. In recent years, we’ve seen inflation-inducing cash giveaways associated with “Covid relief.” We’ve seen the ongoing attempts at profoundly inequitable student loan forgiveness. In December, we saw a $1.7 trillion pork pie omnibus appropriations bill passed by a Congress that had no time to read it.

Lost in all of this has been one spectacular giveaway: $100,000 per beneficiary of the Central States Pension Fund (CSPF). The fund provides pension benefits to nearly 360,000 private-sector workers and retirees, mostly Teamsters Union members. U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, called the deal out in December, noting it was “the largest private pension bailout in American history” that benefited only “a tiny minority of workers.” He suggested it resulted from the insanity of “allowing those who mismanaged pensions to determine whether their funds qualify for taxpayer assistance with no safeguards.”

The $36 billion comes almost two years after the passage of the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan. That “rescue” was the Biden administration’s Covid spending bonanza. Biden signed it into law in the spring of 2021, when the economy was already well into recovery. The housing market was booming. The stock market was on a steady upward climb. It was obvious that the “rescue” would cause inflation. It was obvious Democrats were taking advantage of an opportunity to give away public largesse. And did they ever.

Lest we doubt the ongoing influence of the Teamsters in American politics, the recent $36 billion giveaway says it all. It says to the union bosses, who make up half of the CSPF board: “You can watch the pension fund’s health decline for decades. You can make unrealistic promises to employees. You can keep the plan below 75 percent funded. You can depend on a pyramid concept where imaginary new members keep coming in to pay for retired members. None of that matters now. The politicians you own will bail you out with the public’s money. In fact, you can take such largesse that union workers in other multi-employer plans get left with only crumbs. Write yourself a check. And, as a bonus, we won’t ask you to change anything.”

Workers of the world are not united here. This is a cash grab benefiting one group of roughly 360,000 (3 percent) of the 11 million participants in the multi-employer plans.

And Covid, schmovid. Even before the panic and the lockdowns, the Congressional Research Service reported that the multi-employer pensions were underfunded by $650 billion. In 2018, CSPF had been projected to reach insolvency by 2025.
    Trillions of Dollars Short

To be sure, this bailout falls under the mantra, “Never let a crisis go to waste.” In 2017 and 2019, massive private pension bailouts were introduced and reintroduced. Both times, a more conservative Senate beat them back in the name of fiscal sanity. Opponents of the bailouts pointed out that the bills failed to address the structural problems that put these pension plans on the road to insolvency in the first place. But by 2021, amid the larger Covid-tide spending spree, proponents found their opportunity. No strings attached.

Now a precedent has been set. The Congressional Budget Office has already said: Sorry, the $86 billion the American Rescue Plan tagged for the union pension plans is not enough. Meanwhile, taxpayers more broadly are faced with a bigger devil lurking in the shadows. America’s public pension plans have robbed the henhouse for years through risky investments, chronic underfunding, implausible rate of return projections, inadequate employee contributions, overly generous benefits, and just plain public-sector greed. These state and local pensions present a problem to be measured in the trillions of dollars.

How much is the Teamsters’ mere $36 billion? To put it in perspective, you could run the state of Colorado for a year on that money. You could run all five states of New Hampshire, Vermont, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Idaho, and still have billions left over. The $36 billion is $108 from each man, woman, and child in America into the pockets of the Teamsters. And the White House bragged about it in a press release.
    Mob Rule

Three of the 10 richest counties in America are suburbs of our nation’s capital, and that in large part is because D.C. has become a feeding trough. One of the big piggies, of course, is the Teamsters union. Through the last two federal election cycles, the Teamsters spent more than $9 million on lobbying and more than $10 million in member dues, fattening the campaign coffers of the union oligarchy’s friends.

By the way, if the name Central States Pension Fund rings an unpleasant bell, that’s because it was the vehicle created by the Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa as a means of enriching himself. He used the fund to make loans to his mobster friends and took kickbacks, which landed him in jail. He then turned control of the fund to a mobbed-up friend, who was himself jailed for taking kickbacks. And then the replacement’s replacement was also jailed for taking kickbacks.

Can such a tree bring forth good fruit? Should you and your children pay to maintain the status quo?

in house, they might have purpose.
at our little factory we were always approached by the ILGWA to join their union. we refused. we had an in house little union–dues $1.25 or $1.50 per week. no paid positions. but they did bargain with the owner for our raises and benefits.

            1. The only experience I’ve had vis-a-vis unions was when I worked as a temp at the AT&T facility in Manassas briefly. Some were union, others weren’t and there were subtle undercurrents between the two factions.

  20. “In The Birthplace Of Black Panthers, Black Leaders Battle Anti-Police Activists — Oakland is the site of an emerging normie coalition for public safety”

    Leighton Woodhouse and Michael Shellenberger
    14 min ago

ENTIRE ARTICLE: “No city has played a larger role in creating the Black Lives Matter movement than Oakland, California. In 1966, Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale created the Black Panther Party For Self Defense there. In the 1990s, progressive CNN commentator Van Jones built his police and criminal justice reform organization in Oakland. In 2009, the killing of Oscar Grant by a BART transit officer resulted in anti-police protests so intense that 80 were arrested. And in 2012, after the killing of Trayvon Martin, Oakland activist Alicia Garza wrote “Black Lives Matter” on Facebook, and a movement was born.

In 2020, in response to the killing of George Floyd, Oakland was one of the major flashpoints of the national wave of protests against police violence. The city’s downtown was engulfed in riots. Arsonists started over 100 fires. Hundreds of stores were looted, particularly in Chinatown. Oakland’s city council, following the demands of Black Lives Matter activists, voted to cut $18 million from the Mayor’s proposed police budget, slash the number of future police academies from six to four, and put a hiring freeze on 50 vacant positions.

But today, some of the most prominent and respected black community leaders in Oakland, including the NAACP, church ministers, violence prevention advocates, and a former City Council member, are criticizing the Mayor and anti-police groups at public rallies and in interviews. The protests have attracted support from the city’s Asian leaders, too, despite the fact that the mayor, Sheng Thao, is the child of Hmong immigrants. Oakland, a city of 441,000 people across the Bay from San Francisco, is 22% black, 27% Latino, 16% Asian, and 29% white.

Last Monday, hundreds of Oakland residents attended an NAACP-organized rally at City Hall to demand that Mayor Thao reinstate police chief LeRonne Armstrong, who she fired earlier this month. Speakers, including Carl Chan, a leader in Oakland’s Chinese community, railed against the new Mayor, who, as a Council member, had supported the defund agenda. “For the first time in my 24 years at the police department, you’re seeing the community support a police chief and a police department,” Armstrong told reporters last week.

Oakland politicians remain staunchly progressive, and Mayor Thao is unlikely to change her mind. Last November, voters elected her and a progressive District Attorney, Pamela Price, an anti-police prosecutor in the mold of San Francisco’s ousted District Attorney Chesa Boudin. Price recently attracted national attention after reducing a potentially 75-year sentence for a triple homicide to just 15 years. “I have never seen a case pled down like this before,” said the judge.

But community anger at the anti-police activism that was amplified by the national Black Lives Matter movement has been growing since at least 2021, when families of victims of homicide, most of them black, partnered with Chief Armstrong for a rally on Oakland’s Lake Merritt calling for an end to gun violence. At that rally, the siblings, parents and grandparents of young men killed by gunfire screamed at anti-police activists, saying, “You don’t have a right to be here!” Screamed another, “Not when black children are dying in the street every day!”

It’s a sea change from the Oakland of a generation ago. Terry Wiley, a former assistant D.A. who helped prosecute corrupt Oakland police officers in the early 2000s, said to the crowd at the NAACP rally, “If you told me that I would be standing here seeing a majority group of people of color asking that the police chief be retained, I would say, ‘that ain’t gonna happen in twenty years.’”

What is going on? Why are NAACP and prominent black leaders fighting for the police and against anti-police activists? And why are Asian leaders speaking out against an Asian mayor in support of the former black police chief?”

  22. Aides Brief Buttigieg On Ohio Disaster Using Wooden Toy Train Set
    U.S. · Feb 22, 2023 · BabylonBee.com

“WASHINGTON, D.C. — In preparation for his long-awaited visit to survey the damage left in the wake of the East Palestine, Ohio train derailment disaster, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg’s team is briefing him on the catastrophe by using a wooden toy train set.

“Chugga chugga chugga — TOOT TOOT! Uh oh! Choo choo go boom!'” said Pete excitedly as aides brought out a toy recreation of the derailment. “Wooo Woooooooo! I’m a conductor!”

“We figured this would be the best way to help him understand,” said top Buttigieg aide Michael Fitzpatrick. “Dealing with complex problems with a lot of moving parts and sensitive elements isn’t exactly Secretary Buttigieg’s strong suit. These little wooden toys from Ikea really come in handy.”

Buttigieg is finally commenting on the train derailment that has resulted in a release and controlled burn of toxic chemicals and is planning to visit the region soon. Aides quickly found the Secretary’s basic knowledge of the incident — and the state of Ohio in general — to be severely lacking. “He initially thought we were referring to Palestine, like in the Middle East,” said Patrick Fitzmichael, another close Buttigieg advisor. “We had to grab a globe and show him where Ohio is. After that, using the little toy train set seemed like a good idea.”

Sources who were present at the closed-door briefing described the scene as “fun” and “playful,” but also “disturbing” and “unbefitting of national leadership.”

At publishing time, the Buttigieg team was scrambling to find an adult-sized train conductor’s hat, which the Secretary had demanded if he was going to visit the derailment site.”

  23. “Wife Accidentally Opens Trans-Dimensional Portal Trying To Find Power Button On Remote”
    FAMILY · Feb 22, 2023 · BabylonBee.com

“SIDNEY, MT — The quiet town of Sidney, Montana made headlines recently after a transdimensional portal appeared in the home of Bob and Cynthia Allen. Sources say the wife accidentally opened the time-tunneling tesseract while trying to find the power button on the remote.

The cat was sucked into the otherworldly vortex before the couple realized what was happening.

“I just pushed all the colored buttons, hoping one of them turned it off!” screamed Cynthia while clutching the kitchen table with her husband and watching her favorite bowl disappear into the otherworldly schism. “This is why I just let you do all the TV stuff!”

“That wasn’t even the right remote!” Howled her husband through the tearing of space-time while simultaneously calculating the replacement costs of all the furniture disappearing into the void. “How many times do I — ugh — the Samsung remote is for the Samsung TV. You’re holding the Sony remote which controls the — just give it to me.”

Bob eventually regained command of the situation and vaporized the omniperforated rift by tapping the 17-button, 3-remote shutdown sequence that every husband knows by instinct.

At publishing time, the Allen family was recovering from the transdimensional ordeal while housetraining their new pet, a 42-eyed, multi-tentacled Gorblax. Nobody missed the cat.”

  24. “Biden Tells Residents Of East Palestine To Give Up Drinking Water For Lent”
    WORLD · Feb 21, 2023 · BabylonBee.com

“KYIV — After a surprise visit to Ukraine and a photo op with Ukrainian President Zelenskyy, some are pressing Biden on the environmental crisis in East Palestine. He finally broke his silence on the issue to reporters by suggesting those affected just give up drinking water for Lent.

“Listen, folks, Lent is here. Perfect timing! Not a joke!” said the President in response to a reporter. “If you’re concerned about chemicals or whatever in the drinking water, just give up drinking water for Lent! Simple as that! Don’t drink it! What a great opportunity to avoid toxic water while observing Lent!”

Biden then smiled to himself as he was pleased with the brilliant solution he had just offered.

Sources close to Biden say he also plans to give up something for Lent, although no one knows what it is since he said he plans to give up “flibberblorfzeprefler.”

“That’s right, 40 days without one single sniff of flibberblorfzeprefler!” said Biden. “If I can go without that for that long, you can go without water!”

At publishing time, the President also pledged aid to residents of East Palestine as long as they join the Ukrainian military.”
