Fat Tuesday!

I found this at the New Orleans website: Fun Facts About Mardi Gras!

New Orleans History & Rituals

Mardi Gras in New Orleans is quite the spectacle – but there are a lot of hidden secrets and behind-the-scenes magic that bring the celebration to life. Ever wondered what the most coveted throws of Carnival are, or why an array of colorful ladders line St. Charles Avenue? Learn all about Mardi Gras in New Orleans with these 12 fun facts.

Mardi Gras is more than just a day, it’s an entire season. Carnival season begins on Twelfth Night (January 6) and ends on Fat Tuesday. It’s during this time period that king cakes make their debut – and fly off the shelves all season long.

Mardi Gras Indians’ elaborate “suits” are hand-sewn with thousands of beads and take all year to make. A new suit is made each year.

Colorful ladders with seats line St. Charles Avenue on parade days so that children can get a   clear view. Parade-goers use the ladders to hold their spot prior to the parade starting.

Krewes choose a different theme for their parades each year, with some krewes keeping their themes secret until their parade is rolling.

According to Arthur Hardy, a premier authority on Mardi Gras in New Orleans, items have been tossed off floats since at least 1871During the Twelfth Night Revelers parade, a masker costumed as Santa Claus aboard float No. 24 threw gifts to the crowd. In 1884, Rex started using medallions instead of trinkets. These medallions are represented by today’s doubloons: aluminum and anodized in many different colors.

“Throw Me Something, Mister” are the magic words used to catch all the throws at Mardi Gras parades.

Zulu coconuts, Muses shoes and Krewe of Iris sunglasses are some of the most desired signature “throws” of the season. Revelers go all-out in attempts to catch these, including dressing in colorful costumes, making posters and holding out butterfly nets and targets for float riders to throw to.

There is a city ordinance in Orleans Parish that prohibits Mardi Gras from being commercialized. No corporate sponsorships are allowed on floats. All expenses are paid by krewes and riders.

Beads “grow” on trees during Carnival season in New Orleans. Tree-lined St. Charles Avenue transforms into a Mardi Gras wonderland by the time Fat Tuesday rolls around.

Float riders are required by law to wear masks or face paint.

Traditionally, the Mayor of New Orleans hands over the key to the city to Rex, the king of Carnival, on Mardi Gras Day.

To officially end Carnival celebrations, New Orleans police officers on foot and mounted on horseback move through the crowds on Bourbon Street at midnight on Mardi Gras Day.  The Mayor often joins.

  1. Good morning! I fell asleep relatively early for me and woke up in the wee hours. M forgot to schedule her open, so I did that, then checked my e-mail. Checked into PV follower #’s – now at 1,250,700 and steadily going down – at 4:30 yesterday, it was 1,378,874! I am lovin’ this!!!

TBH, I don’t think I could handle Mardi Gras these days. Maybe 30 years ago but it’s entirely too out-of-control for my tastes. I did visit New Orleans once but it was in the winter with a truck driver I met on the CB on a trip home to NE and…..well, that’s another story for another time. Back in my wild and crazy days….LOL

      1. Good morning! Just saw the weather forecast on Fox – Rodney will get hit today, tomorrow I am in the bottom edge of the possible blizzard conditions, then Thursday it heads your way, with a “significant ice storm and heavy rain.” Get ready, my dear! I am going to Norfolk later this morning and any snow that does fall today shouldn’t be any impediment to me. I’ll be back home and safe before it really starts…..I hope.

          1. Just a suggestion, but is it possible for him to re-schedule that? Surely they would be amenable to that, considering the weather….No-one should EVER drive on ice unless it’s an emergency, IMO.

EXCERPT: “The West wants this war. They NEED this war. It’s been planned and deliberately provoked for a very long time, and put on fast track since at least 2014.

Both Angela Merkel and US War Secretary Blinken have admitted that the Minsk Agreements were deliberate DECEPTIONS of Russia in order to build up attacking armies in Ukraine, Blinken and made it clear that the US will NEVER accept the Minsk Agreement and it was indeed only to buy time for a war they wanted from the start. Vice President Kamala Harris criminally irresponsible (or calculatedly deliberate) declaration that “Ukraine should join NATO and be re-armed with Nuclear Weapons” at a top European security meeting was the last straw for Putin. The Russian “special operation” launched within 24 hours.

The West has deliberately created this war. They NEED it to default on all the debt and create a new world order thereafter with a new digital currency that the #IMF is always proposing using #Blockchain so that if I gave you $100, they will know where I got it and every person down the line. Technology has opened their mind to envision a whole new era of #totalitarianism

This is why point 8 in Schwab’s #GreatReset is to end our right to vote. How dare we think that we have any right to tell those above what they should do?

We are the dirt beneath their feet. This is all taking place so they can justify their sovereign defaults and create a new world order with Bretton Woods II and this time the IMF will be handed the reserve currency using blockchain to ensure we surrender all our privacy and rights into the future.

They think they can have themselves a limited nuclear war, and stay safe in their bunkers while a few hundred million of you and your kids die. (Hey, it’s for the #Environment, kids!)

Do you know what THEY learned from Chernobyl and Fuckushima?

First, let’s talk about MAD. You think they concluded that Nuclear war is unthinkably horrible and mean, and we all perish together? Not a chance. They “learned” (through war-gaming and simulation) that if you can surround your opponent, the way NATO has broken every treaty to encircle Russia, that you can maybe gain an edge of survivability, and that MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) may not be 100% true anymore. Maybe you get destroyed 70%, and your enemy 100%. That works fine if the elite are underground with 5 years of food supplies in underground facilities and tunnels that have cost trillions of dollars since the 1950’s. (hint, you’re not invited.. see below)

Even more importantly, they’ve learned the earth can regenerate something scary. (Never mind that this conflicts with the fragility of ecosystems and global warming they constantly cram down our throats. That stuff is for consumption by the little people) You see, Chernoble and the hundreds of square miles of “no go” land around it are THRIVING. It’s a literal Garden of Eden where nature has reclaimed everything.

So they learned that all this “1000 years uninhabitable” nuclear winter shit is overblown. That nature heals one hell of a lot faster than modeled. That nuclear war is survivable… for them, while you useless eaters are reduced in the process. What’s not to love? Now… how to get you all riled up to kill, and accept hardship, and loss of rights because “we’re all in this together”, and camps, and lots and lots of death?

That’s actually pretty easy. Do what’s always worked. Do what Nazi’s did to get average god-fearing educated Germans to fight:

  3. BTW, my Sis has verified that these tunnels DO exist. When she was driving truck in MD and cross-country, she used to haul for the GPO (Government Printing Office) and delivered to one of those tunnels. And she’s seen others around the country.

No Vaccine No Food? Grocery Industry Merging with Big Tech and Big Pharma as New App Tracks Drug and Vaccine Purchases Along with Food — Big Food is making its move into the “digital health space”…

    Editor, Health Impact News

EXCERPT: “Big Food is making its move into the “digital health space” as grocery chain giant Albertsons announced the roll-out of its “Sincerely Health” platform along with a new app where customers “can connect data from wearables, integrate prescriptions, design their diet and make telehealth or vaccination appointments.”

Albertsons, which includes other mega grocery chains such as Safeway, Vons, Shaw’s, Jewel-Osco, Acme and Tom Thumb, among others, is currently in talks to merger with Kroger, another mega grocery chain, which would give them 36% control over the grocery supermarket business in the United States. Walmart, the largest grocery chain in the U.S., offers something similar, as they recently teamed up with Avanlee Care, which offers caregivers a similar platform integrated with Walmart shopping lists and pharmacy tools.

Your grocery purchasing habits have been considered very valuable data for decades now, with most major supermarkets offering things like “loyalty” cards that give discounts on grocery products. But now, Big Food wants to merge that with your Big Pharma purchases as well, which would include prescription drug purchases as well as vaccines.

    Fierce Healthcare reports:

Albertsons moved to enter the digital health space with its platform Sincerely Health, designed to direct consumers on their health and wellness journeys.

Sincerely Health was designed with input from providers, payers and tech experts along with insights from 10,000 customers and employees. Users can connect data from wearables, integrate prescriptions, design their diet and make telehealth or vaccination appointments. The platform announcement comes as Albertsons has garnered headlines over a consumer suit to block the proposed megamerger with Kroger.

“We are introducing Sincerely Health with a singular intention to improve lives,” Omer Gajial, chief digital officer and executive vice president for health at Albertsons, said in a press release. “As a grocery and pharmacy retailer committed to the health and wellness of our communities, we are empowering customers to have a connected and personalized view of their health across food, nutrition, activity, mental well-being and pharmacy services, enabling them to make more informed choices.”

Users first start by filling out a questionnaire based on what the platform refers to as “seven-dimensions of wellbeing”: activity, mental well-being, mindfulness, nutrition, physical health, self-control and sleep. Responses are assessed along with the user’s age, gender, lifestyle choices and mental health.

Users can then set goals such as engaging in meditation five times a week, sleeping at least seven hours a night and taking 10 thousand steps daily.

The platform connects users with the Albertsons pharmacy by managing prescriptions, scheduling vaccine appointments and making telehealth appointments through the grocer’s partnership with Providence Express Care. Users can opt in to receive reminders to take daily medications or refill prescriptions.

“Pixel” tracking technology, which has been the subject of several lawsuits regarding patient privacy of health system websites, is used to track users’ interests and provide relevant content. Users can opt out of the use of “pixels,” according to Albertsons. (Full article.)”

    02/19/2023 / By S.D. Wells / Comments

EXCERPT: An alarming trend in cancer rates skyrocketing for perfectly healthy people has garnered major attention, even in reports published in peer-reviewed medical journals. What is being termed “turbo cancer” since the Covid vaccines hit the market may be the prime culprit of this disastrous increase in deadly cancer cases, including those of the pancreas, which has the lowest rate of survival of all cancers. Women under 55 years of age, mainly black women, are especially being targeted by pancreatic cancer, according to a report in the Gastroenterology journal recently, and scientists seem befuddled.

  6. From Jonathan Turley: “The National Endowment for Democracy To Cut Off Further Support for the Global Disinformation Index”

EXCERPT: “I have been writing about “the Global Disinformation Index” produced by a British group funded by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), which itself is funded by the federal government. That includes a recent column in The Hill. The NED receives a massive $330 million budget through the U.S. State Department. The NED contacted me today after the column ran and informed me that it will no longer fund the GDI.

The columns suggest that this effort should be included in the broader investigations by Congress, so we can have the full facts on what is being done to score or to censor speech. We also do not know the full role or knowledge of the federal government in such efforts.

The GDI used allegedly biased analysis to target conservative and libertarian sites as spreaders of dangerous disinformation. Indeed, all ten of the most “risky” sites are some of the most popular sites for conservatives, including a site offering legal analysis from conservative and libertarian law professors. The group warns advertisers that supporting these sites could damage a company’s reputation and brand.

My concern is how this index contributes to a broader effort to target opposing views or speakers on the Internet and why further congressional investigation is warranted:

“After yielding to an outcry over the creation of the Disinformation Governance Board, the Administration disbanded it. It never mentioned that a far larger censorship effort was being carried out with an estimated 80 federal employees in targeting citizens and others. While the GDI effort is smaller in comparison and effect, it is an additional facet of this effort. It is not known if the Administration has other programs of this kind and the Democrats continue to vehemently oppose any investigation into these free speech concerns.”

After the Hill column ran, I was contacted by the NED. NED wanted to make clear that the decision to fund GDI was its own choice and not directed by the Biden Administration. While the columns do not say that this funding was directed by the government, the NED felt it could be implied for readers. That is, of course, a fair point of clarification and I immediately added it to the columns on the blog. However, it does not alter the underlying concern over federal support for an organization, including the NED, that funds work inimical to free speech.

The NED confirmed that “given our commitment to avoid the perception that the NED is engaged in any work domestically, directly or indirectly, we will no longer provide financial support to GDI.”

The decision is commendable but there remain unanswered questions and I have asked the NED for clarification on a number of points. That includes a reference to a possible different donor supporting the GDI effort. It is not clear if the NED raised this money as part of a more general disinformation initiative and whether federal funds are used in such grants. The NED website has various references to its work to combat disinformation.

It is also not clear how the federal funds are committed by the NED. The email states that the State Department does not exercise control over the Endowment’s grant making. I have asked for an explanation how it uses discretion in the commitment of the federal funds. For example, could federal funds have been used for the GDI and is the source of the funding expressly stipulated as part of the grant? I also asked for confirmation on whether the NED informed the government of its funding of the GDI or similar disinformation efforts.

The concern is still obvious that a congressionally-created and federally funded 501c3 organization like the NED would be engaged, directly or indirectly, in this type of controversial scoring system given its implications for free speech. It is not clear if the NED secured specific funding for this effort from other donors and, if so, why it did so. It is also not clear if the NED could use federal funds and private funds on an interchangeable and discretionary basis.

It is also not clear what type of review the NED exercised over this work.”

  7. “San Francisco liberals rush to defense of fentanyl-dealing illegal immigrants — Legislation would deport drug peddlers from city, and woke leftists aren’t having it”

ENTIRE ARTICLE @ FreeBeacon: “Susannah Luthi
    February 15, 2023
Liberals are attacking a San Francisco lawmaker’s plan to deport fentanyl-dealing illegal aliens, arguing it would make immigrant communities distrust the city.

Supervisor Matt Dorsey on Tuesday introduced legislation that would amend San Francisco’s “sanctuary city” laws to make illegal immigrants caught dealing fentanyl eligible for deportation, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Experts say most of the fentanyl in San Francisco, which has killed more than 1,400 residents since 2020, is dealt by illegal immigrants from Honduras.

The bill’s rationale seems lost on progressives, who rushed to condemn Dorsey for his proposal. University of San Francisco migration law professor Bill Hing told the Chronicle the proposal would have a “chilling effect” on all immigrants and that the city “should not be in the business of facilitating the deportation of its residents.”

At the moment, city authorities are only permitted to flag for deportation illegal immigrants convicted of certain violent crimes, including rape, murder, and arson.

Del Seymour, an advocate from the city’s Tenderloin neighborhood, argued that the illegal immigrants are selling the drug because they have no other options. Fentanyl dealers have largely taken over the streets in the Tenderloin, which is the epicenter of fentanyl dealing in San Francisco.

Activists aren’t the only ones blocking attempts at reform. San Francisco courts have repeatedly blocked District Attorney Brooke Jenkins’s efforts to secure pretrial detentions for some of the city’s most dangerous fentanyl dealers, letting the offenders walk free instead.

The debate around San Francisco’s sanctuary city laws came to a head in 2015 after an illegal immigrant who had been deported five times shot and killed a 32-year-old woman. The man, Jose Inez Garcia-Zarate, was sentenced in June 2022 to time served on gun charges stemming from the murder.”

      1. it’s weird…we have these corn/apple blocks (the size of a decent salt block). we put them out for the deer in the winter–they try to chew them, but mostly they lick them till they get to a corn piece. but the deer, birds and squirrels will all “eat” there.
the raccoons didn’t touch it at all. and i thought once they showed up, the block would be gone–they would carry it off…lol
        but nope.

              1. really? wow…I didn’t know horses would like them.
we tried a mineral block once–none of the deer would go near it.
the camps around here all put out the blocks for “mega-racks” and stuff so we avoid that.

  13. a teacher’s arrogant statement on why parents should NOT be questioning what their children are being taught.

I have a Master’s degree because, when I got certified, I was told I have to have a Master’s degree to be an Arizona certified teacher. We all have advanced degrees. What do the parents have? Are we vetting the background of our parents? Are we allowing the parents to choose the curriculum and the books that our children are going to read? I think that it’s a mistake—and I’m just speaking from the heart—the one line that I love is “We must remember that the purpose of public education is not to teach only what parents want their children to be taught; it is to teach them what society needs them to be taught.”

    and the responses…

Whose kids are you teaching? Who is paying taxes to give you a job? The answer is Parents. They are your employers, and that is why YOU are vetted, and they are not. A difficult concept for someone with a graduate degree to grasp. But think about it…

Around a dozen train cars were seen off the track following the overnight derailing in Gothenburg, around 50 miles from the Nebraska state capital of Lincoln.

Law enforcement and a hazmat team were on the scene as authorities deal with yet another derailment on the nation’s railways.

Crews with the Union Pacific Railroad were also on the scene Tuesday morning to attempt the cleanup.

A witness told KNOP that the wreck was the third derailment in the exact spot in the last six months due to a broken rail.

Union Railroad said in a statement: ‘At about 1:45a.m. CST today, approximately 31 Union Pacific train cars carrying coal derailed near Gothenburg, Nebraska.

‘No one was injured. The incident occurred about three miles southeast of Gothenburg. Cleanup has begun, with heavy equipment on site.

‘One of the three mainline tracks near the derailment site reopened to train traffic at about 8 a.m. CST. The cause of the incident is under investigation.’

The Monday derailment occurred after Transport Secretary Pete Buttigieg announced that he is visiting the site of the toxic derailment in East Palestine, 18 days after the disaster.

  23. so miss diversity is actually, as her mother describes it–“as white as the driven snow”…
    so she’s a GRIFTER
    entire article
The senior inclusion officer of a Philadelphia-based social justice group has been lying about her ethnic identity for years — claiming she is a woman of color despite being “as white as the driven snow,” her mother alleges.

Raquel Evita Saraswati, 39, who was born Rachel Elizabeth Seidel, is the chief equity, inclusion and culture officer of the American Friends Service Committee, which fights “violence, inequality and oppression,” the Intercept reported.

The Muslim activist, who has access to files of the progressive Quaker group’s workers and volunteers, has claimed for years to be of Latin, South Asian and Arab descent.

But her mother, Carol Perone, said Saraswati is actually of British, German and Italian descent.

“I call her Rachel. I don’t know why she’s doing what she’s doing,” Perone told the Intercept. “I’m as white as the driven snow and so is she.”

She added: “I’m German and British, and her father was Calabrese Italian. She’s chosen to live a lie, and I find that very, very sad.”

Perone said her daughter converted to Islam in high school and for some reason felt compelled to present a different ethnic identity.

The mother shared with the Intercept photos that show Saraswati with a far lighter complexion when she was a child, as well as her Ancestry.com profile. She asked the outlet not to publish the images.

Another family member, who asked not to be identified, confirmed to the Intercept that Saraswati is white.

Oskar Pierre Castro, a human resources official who helped AFSC hire Saraswati, was told she was a “queer, Muslim, multiethnic woman,” according to the news outlet.

“In my mind it was, ‘Great, a person of color, a queer person of color, who happens to be a Muslim, it’s a woman,’ all these things, and someone who seemed to get it,” Castrol told the Intercept.

“I definitely feel conned. … I feel deceived,” he added.

AFSC rep Layne Mullett told the outlet that the organization has received “documentation alleging that our Chief Equity, Inclusion, and Culture Officer, Raquel Saraswati, has been misrepresenting her identity.”

Mullett said Saraswati “stands by her identity. Raquel also assures us that she remains loyal to AFSC’s mission, which we firmly believe.”

He added that “AFSC does not require any employee to ‘prove’ their heritage as a condition of their employment, or in order to be valued as a member of our team.”

Some AFSC members have expressed concerns that Saraswati may be harboring a hidden political agenda and is working on behalf of groups that seek to undermine the group.

An anonymous letter posted on Medium that the Intercept confirmed was penned by the members claims that after 9/11, Saraswati appeared on right-wing TV shows, where she was described as a “moderate” Muslim critical of Islamic extremism.

“We hope that this will catalyze further truth-telling and accountability,” the letter reportedly states, calling for the AFSC to investigate whether there are “external entities with whom Saraswati is collaborating.”

A top AFSC official told the Intercept that “people are concerned,” adding that “there’s a fear that she could be an agent, because she started her career right-wing. She was a token Muslim voice in that milieu. She never publicly apologized.”

The official spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid retaliation.

“Imagine the trauma of people who confided in her, trusted her, and shared sensitive information about their work and about their lives, thinking that she’s a fellow person of color,” the leader told the outlet.

“And now all of a sudden, it’s a white woman with a right-wing history. It’s scary,” the source added.

Saraswati did not respond to multiple requests for comment from the Intercept.

“I assure people that as soon as I am capable, I will provide answers to the recent discussion and attack on me,” she wrote on Facebook on Saturday. “I understand all the reactions you’re having. I am currently taking the time to get to where I can answer in a way that is most helpful and thorough.”

Saraswati’s case is reminiscent of that of notorious race faker Rachel Dolezal, a former NAACP chapter president in Spokane, Washington, who falsely posed as a black woman in 2015.

Her Caucasian parents presented her birth certificate and a stack of blond, green-eyed childhood photos as proof of her true racial identity.

More recently, Republican Long Island Rep. George Santos has been caught in a web of lies, including claiming that he is Jewish — later insisting that he meant he was “Jew-ish.”

Media commentator Sana Saeed first brought up Saraswati’s identity 2015, when she tweeted: “Can we talk about ‘Raquel Dolezal’ in the Muslim community. Y’all know who I mean.”
What do you think? Post a comment.

Saeed told the Intercept that the Saraswati controversy “puts a sharp, bright light on … the DEI industry itself,” referring to diversity, equity and inclusion.

“Did AFSC not vet their candidates, like Raquel?” she said.

  24. today is faschnaut (spelling?) day! (we called it Donut Day)
Mom would make homemade donuts today and we would race home after school to eat some!!
it was a raised dough recipe and she deep fried them. Then she filled plastic bags with powdered sugar and we would shake the donuts in those bags.
I preferred the donut holes myself.

  25. Club 47!

    February 21, 2023 12:59 pm

No Republican can win the nomination without Florida and no Republican can win Florida without Palm Beach County. Club 45 is aligned with leadership of Palm Beach County Republican Party, in particular, Joe Budd Linda Stoch Sue and Larry Snowden. Rank and file Party activists are 100% Trump
Trump describes ‘common sense agenda’ to supporters‘2024 election is our one chance to save our country,’ former president says

The former commander-in-chief spoke for more than an hour on what he called a “common sense agenda,” discussing issues he plans to tackle if re-elected.
“We will direct the Department of Justice in education to open civil rights investigations into any school district promoting race-based discrimination because that’s what they are doing — it’s race-based,” Trump said. “We will protect parents’ rights by promoting universal school choice, which is so important that the direct election of school principals will elect your school principal. How about that?”
Health care, the economy and immigration reform were also addressed.
“Last week we had 121 nations dropping people in our country,” Trump said. “We have no idea who the hell they are, what they do (or) where they came from. We don’t know anything about these people, and I think at the end of this year, it’ll be 15 million people will be let into this country.”
The visit from the former president was hosted by Club 45, the nonprofit aimed at supporting the former president’s re-election campaign. After Monday’s speech, the organization officially changed its name to Club 47.
Among the sold-out crowd was William Reicherter, a former contender for a Florida Senate seat, who said he’s looking forward to seeing Trump back in the White House.
“I believe he’s the strongest leader. He’s got the best plans, and these other countries, they’re all afraid of him,” Reicherter said. “If you notice that, when he was in the office, we never had any of these problems.”
Trump’s next public appearance is set for Wednesday in East Palestine, Ohio, where a train carrying hazardous materials derailed Feb. 3.
