My favorite use for cinnamon is, of course, warm cinnamon buns!  But there are many interesting facts you might not know about cinnamon.

Cinnamon is the aromatic, inner bark of certain bushy, tropical, evergreen trees of the Cinnamomum genus.

It is native to Sri Lanka, the neighboring Malabar Coast of India, and Myanmar (Burma).

Cinnamon has been in use by humans for thousands of years—as early as 2,000 B.C. Egyptians employed it, as well as the related spice cassia, as a perfuming agent during the embalming process.

Evidence suggests it was used throughout the ancient world, and that Arab traders brought it to Europe, where it proved equally popular.

Legend holds that the Roman emperor Nero burned as much as he could find of the precious spice on the funeral pyre of his second wife Poppaea Sabina in A.D. 65 to atone for his role in her death.

In the first century A.D., Pliny the Elder wrote off 350 grams of cinnamon as being equal in value to over five kilograms of silver, about fifteen times the value of silver per weight.

Through the Middle Ages, the source of cinnamon remained a mystery to the Western world.

Cinnamon is a small evergreen tree 33-49 feet tall.

The leaves are ovate-oblong in shape, 3-7 inches long.

The flowers, which are arranged in panicles, have a greenish color, and have a rather disagreeable odor.

The fruit is a purple one-centimeter berry containing a single seed.

When harvesting the spice, the bark and leaves are the primary parts of the plant used.

It is principally employed in cookingas a condiment and flavoring material.

Cinnamon is often used in savory dishes of chicken and lamb.

In the United States, cinnamon and sugar are often used to flavor cereals, bread-based dishes, such as toast, and fruits, especially apples; a cinnamon-sugar mixture is sold separately for such purposes.

Ground cinnamon is composed of around 11% water, 81% carbohydrates, 4% protein, and1%fat.

Cinnamon has a long history of use in traditional medicine.

The health benefits of cinnamon include its ability to help manage diabetes, protect against fungal and bacterial infections, increase brain function, prevent certain cognitive disorders, improve digestion, boost the strength of the immune system.

Cinnamon is a rich source of vitamin K, calcium, and iron, while providing moderate amounts of vitamin B6, vitamin E, magnesium, and zinc.

Cinnamon constituents include some 80 aromatic compounds, including eugenol found in the oil from leaves or bark of cinnamon trees.

Cinnamon is a popular flavoring in numerous alcoholic beverages and cocktails.

Indonesia and China are world largest producers of cinnamon with 75% of the world’s supply.

The term “cinnamon” also is used to describe its mid-brown color.

In Exodus 30:23-4, Moses is ordered to use both sweet cinnamon (Kinnamon) and cassia (qəṣî`â) together with myrrh, sweet calamus (qənê-bosem, literally cane of fragrance), and olive oil to produce a holy oil to anoint the Ark of the Covenant.

Cinnamon also is mentioned in Proverbs 7:17-18, where the lover’s bed is perfumed with myrrh, aloe, and cinnamon. Psalm 45:8 mentions the garments of Torah scholars that smell of myrrh, aloes, and cassia.

Cinnamon also is alluded to by Herodotus and other classical writers. According to Herodotus, both cinnamon and cassia grow in Arabia, together with incense, myrrh, and ladanum, and are guarded by winged serpents. The phoenix builds its nest from cinnamon and cassia.

    United Food and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) said that requiring workers to wear a smartwatch could be a violation of health and safety policies, because it could lead to injuries and contamination of products.

    “Besides the tracking and the invasion of somebody’s privacy, there is this real safety and health issue,” UFCW’s head of meatpacking Mark Lauritsen told Vice. The app is not being used at plants where workers are represented by UFCW. Lauritsen said that they will push back to prevent the use of the app. “We’re not going to allow their need to have more money and more productivity endanger people’s lives and limbs just so they can make an extra dollar,” he said. “It’s just not gonna happen.”

    The Miss United States of America beauty pageant cannot be forced to allow transgender women to compete because doing so would interfere with its ability to express “the ideal vision of American womanhood,” a U.S. appeals court ruled on Wednesday.

    The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in a 2-1 decision rejected a lawsuit by Anita Green, a transgender activist, claiming that Miss USA’s policy of only allowing “natural born” women to compete violates an Oregon anti-discrimination law.

    Green, who is from Oregon, sued Miss USA in federal court in Portland last year after her application to participate in the pageant was rejected.

    The 9th Circuit said applying the Oregon law, which prohibits discrimination based on gender identity in public accommodations, to Miss USA would violate the pageant’s free speech rights under the U.S. Constitution. The court agreed with Miss USA that the pageant expresses its views on womanhood by determining who can compete.

    “It is commonly understood that beauty pageants are generally designed to express the ‘ideal vision of American womanhood,’” wrote Circuit Judge Lawrence VanDyke, an appointee of former Republican President Donald Trump.

    Such has been the millennial demand — almond milk is the most popular alt-milk — that California, which produces 80% of the world’s almonds in its arid Central Valley, saw land planted with almond trees grow from 1,958 square kilometres to 6,475 square kilometres over the last 20 years. The result? Drought, desertification, and almond-growers having to grub up their trees due to lack of water.

    It gets worse. Almond growers invariably douse their crop in quantities of glyphosate — known to be lethal to bees. According to Nate Donley, a senior scientist for the Center for Biological Diversity, sending bees to pollinate the California almond industry is “like sending the bees to war. Many don’t come back.” In California, bees are dying in record numbers due to habitat loss and exposure to the pesticides of the industrialised almond industry. Animal Rebellion? When vegans drink almond milk, they are complicit in Animal Extinction.

    What about uber-trendy coconut milk? Well, coconut trees only grow in tropical climates. Western demand is causing the exploitation of workers in poorer nations: just ask a small farmer in the Philippines or Indonesia on $2 a day for back-breaking work. And, er, what about the food miles?

    Or the destruction of rainforests? It’s not just coconut milk that’s guilty on this front. Large swathes of the Amazon have been burned to make way for soy farms, and the soy goes into alt-milk as well as the cattle feed. But don’t be fooled into thinking the solution is to start growing them closer to home, in the northern hemisphere. Of the soybeans grown in the US, 94% are genetically engineered. According to a study published in Food Chemistry, when sprayed with the ever-popular pesticide RoundUp, genetically engineered soybeans accumulate high levels of glyphosate — which is not just toxic to bees but, says the British Medical Journal, likely carcinogenic.

    Still fancy, soya? A study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Nutrition suggests that cow milk is far more sustainable for the planet than “milk alternatives”, especially soya-based ones, and especially if the cows are in UK systems based on grass. According to the lead author, Professor Mike Wilkinson: if you’re a British consumer, “drinking milk from cows in the UK uses 11 times less soya than consuming drinks made directly from soya”.

    None of this changes the basics of the case. DePape is still a lunatic who attacked an elderly man with a hammer after breaking into his house. Paul Pelosi is still lucky to be alive. But the sequence suggested by Miguel Almaguer raises some questions as to whether the attack itself might have been avoided, and what exactly was going on in the house before police arrived.

    For instance, why would Pelosi have walked back toward DePape after opening the door to the police? Why not tell them he was in danger? NBC provides a couple of speculative opinions to answer the obvious question this report raises, but without any factual substantiation. They bring in a former FBI analyst to essentially claim that fear makes people do strange things, which may be true but still leaves the conclusion that it was a strange thing to do. The easiest thing to do would have been to walk the other way and tell officers of the danger inside. That would be even more true in the case of an intruder than, say, a domestic-violence situation, where the “fear makes you do strange things” explanation might apply more.

    More oddities emerge, too. The new details don’t include whether Pelosi had been attacked prior to the officer’s arrival on scene; Miguel Almaguer notes that explicitly, in fact. If Pelosi was injured prior to their arrival, though, why would police have allowed him to go back into a residence with evidence of burglary apparent? In fact, one has to wonder why they would have let Pelosi do that even without apparent injuries, given the scene at that moment. And why weren’t the officers informed that the residence belonged to the Speaker of the House, who is second in line for succession to the presidency and could have also been inside the home at the time?

    The trigger was the school’s “sexually explicit LGBT books made available to students.”

    The PJMedia report said because of that dispute, “Muslim leaders in Michigan are calling for their community to vote against liberal Democrats, including Rep. Rashida Tlaib.   49. I am adding a short daily prayer to the board. I would invite each of you, if you wish, to also add one or maybe two of your own liking. I do not want to stifle anyone but please limit yourself to one or two religious postings. here’s one I found that I liked.
