I have fond memories of trick or treating as a child.  Up to a certain age, my dad would walk along with us girls, while my mom stayed home and handed out candy with my little brother.  We wore costumes made of synthetic-easy to catch fire- fabric and plastic masks on elastic bands sure to obstruct your vision and make you sweat buckets.  We always had trick or treat on a Friday evening from 6-8 pm and each house invited you in or at least tried to guess who you were.  We had no flashlights, no reflective tape, no glow sticks.  If you wanted candy, you took your chances.

The house at the end of our block was always decked out to the nines in spooky decorations.  Scary music blared through speakers in the windows.  The older couple was always dressed as a werewolf and a witch and they loved playing their parts to scare the neighbor kids.  It was a grand tradition we always looked forward to.

Our Halloween treat bags would get full quickly because every house in a 4-block square had their lights on—meaning they were giving out treats! And oh, what treats we’d get—popcorn balls, full size candy bars, caramel apples and goodie bags! Those were awesome!  Little paper treat bags filled with penny candies—even candy corn! (I love candy corn!)

The whole experience was creepy and such fun!  Fast forward a few years (never mind how many) and the government has sucked the fun out of trick or treating.  Gone are the spooky hours—now it’s held on a Saturday between 2-4pm.  Gone are those masks too.  Now it’s make-up (which is presumably non-toxic).  The candy bars have shrunk; the popcorn balls are gone, as are the caramel apples.  And those treat bags?  Not allowed.  Nothing unwrapped or homemade is permitted. 

But the final nail in the coffin of the holiday was the vans.  After we were all grown and out of my parents’ house, they would sit on their front porch and hand out candy bars to the trick or treaters.  A few years later, the vans started pulling up at the end of the block.  The doors would open and larger kids (translation: teenagers) would pour out, sans costumes, and approach the houses.  They wouldn’t even call out trick or treat.  They just thrust their pillowcases out and expected treats.  And since they weren’t wearing any masks, it was easy to tell that none of these “kids” lived in the surrounding neighborhoods.  That’s when the magic of Halloween died for my parents.

    1. Morning! Halloween was not a big deal for me – I only have fleeting memories. But I also remember the popcorn balls, homemade brownies, full-size candy bars. My first Halloween living here, I had a couple of kids come, one being my neighbor. The next year? Nada! My neighbor moved. Every year, I got some candy ready but no-one came to my door. And yes, I had my lights on. I used to go to be with Piper for Trunk-or-Treat day (cars lined up on main street and yes, during the day). Now, I don’t pay hardly any attention to any of the holidays.

    A Democrat pushed “Fringe Benefits” case, having to do with deductions on the use of a company car (2), a company apartment, and payments to a school for the education of a company executive’s grandchildren, will begin on Monday, coincidentally right before the big Midterm Elections. There has not been such a case (Criminal) brought in the United States before, handcuffs for the Executive, and all. Democrat “Peekaboo” James is also happening just before the Election, a NO NO. Disgraceful!!!

    The Health and Human Services Department is facing searching new scrutiny regarding federal involvement in transgender policies toward children, the latest federal agency to face Congressional questions over how taxpayer dollars may be pushing the issue and even funding surgeries.

    Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), ranking member on the Subcommittee on Civil Rights and Civil Liberties, sent a letter to HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra raising concerns about the department’s work to “promote life altering changes to young children.”

    “I write to conduct oversight of the federal government’s use of taxpayer funds to promote radical gender ideology and the medical transition of children using pharmaceutical or surgical interventions,” Mace wrote. “The Biden Administration appears to be encouraging any child, who does not conform to perceptions of masculine or feminine stereotypes, to alter his or her body through potentially irreversible medical or surgical intervention. Instead of funding these life-altering drugs and procedures, our government should be promoting policies to protect vulnerable children — who cannot consent.”

    HHS is the latest, but not the only, federal agency to come under scrutiny for its transgender policies toward children. As The Center Square previously reported, the State Department’s Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility Strategic Plan also came under Congressional scrutiny for including taxpayer-funded “gender transition care” for employees as well as their children.

    Mace said that other Western nations have raised concerns about the transgender drugs and surgeries, but that the Biden administration has gone all in.

    The letter explicitly requests information on the extent to which taxpayer dollars are being used to fund these drugs and surgeries.

    “HHS, under the guise of ‘gender affirming care,’ now promotes medical interventions such as drugs designed to block puberty, opposite-sex hormones to transition children — both of which do not have FDA approval for use in children’s gender care — and even surgical interventions to remove or alter the gender specific anatomy,” the letter said.

    “HHS also falsely promotes some of these interventions as ‘reversible’ or ‘partially reversible’ despite potential, serious long-term physical and mental health risks, complications, and regret,” the letter continued. “In fact, there is growing evidence that children who took puberty blockers or endured gender surgery soon regret it. The American medical institutions simply do not have enough data to understand outcomes. Children who suffer from mental health conditions are least likely to engage in sound decision making which is where parental control should intervene.”

    Declaring it is “imperative that the American people understand HHS’s role and the use of federal taxpayer money to promote a radical gender ideology that is harming children in our country,” Mace requests that the department turn over to the committe by Nov. 8 an extensive range of documents and communications relating to federal involvement in gender-related medicine interventions, funding, research, and promotion.

    HHS did not respond to a request for comment.

    Pumpkin Crunch Cake

    This is one of my favorite pumpkin recipes! I subscribe to several recipe sharing groups, and this recipe popped up in my email inbox a few years ago. I have no ideas about the origin of the recipe, but I’ve seen it around the internet in similar forms. Anyone out there know where this recipe comes from?

    “Cake” is a bit of a misnomer, because it is really quite custard-y. I suppose it could be called cake since a boxed cake mix is used, but it is not a cake in the traditional sense. Each time I make this recipe, I add more and more pecans because I like the extra crunchiness and flavor they add. I’ve reflected my changes below.

    Pumpkin Crunch Cake
    Ingredients:
    1 box yellow cake mix
    1 can (15 oz) pumpkin puree
    1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
    3 large eggs
    1 1/2 cups sugar
    1 tsp. cinnamon
    1/2 tsp. salt
    1 1/2 cups chopped pecans (the original recipe called for 1/2 cup)
    1 cup butter, melted

    Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease bottom of 9 x 13″ pan. Mix pumpkin, milk, eggs, sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Pour mixture into greased pan. Sprinkle dry cake mix over pumpkin mixture and top with pecans. Drizzle melted butter over pecans. Bake 50-55 minutes.

    1. I’m going to try to adapt this for Sally’s diabetic constraints – make it with almond flour, stevia/monk fruit sugar, etc. Pumpkin is one of her favorite things. She even loves pumpkin butter in a jar like apple butter….and she adores pecans!

    A previously deported illegal alien again crossed the United States-Mexico border, under President Joe Biden’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS), after having been convicted of sexually assaulting a fourth-grade girl.

    In February 2021, illegal alien Carlos Bartolo Rios of Mexico pleaded guilty to third-degree sexual conduct and exposing a minor to obscene material after a fourth-grade girl told law enforcement that she had been repeatedly raped by Rios in North Charleston, South Carolina.

    The girl said she was instructed by Rios “not to tell anyone” about the sexual assaults.

    After having been sentenced to time served as a part of his plea deal, Rios was arrested and deported to Mexico in March 2021 by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency.

    This month, Rios was arrested again by ICE agents in North Charleston after he crossed the southern border and successfully evaded Border Patrol agents, the Post and Courier reported:

    Rios told investigators after he was arrested Oct. 27 that he reentered the U.S. sometime in 2021 without inspection or approval, a source close to the investigation but not authorized to speak told The Post and Courier. The source said ICE is unaware of any crimes Rios committed since his reentry. He is not listed on any state or national sex offender registries.

    How the 32-year-old man with an aggravated felony conviction entered the country was not immediately clear.

    ICE launched Operation Sex Offender Arrest and Removal as early as 2012 to prioritize the removal of noncitizens who have “demonstrated predatory behavior.”

    Rios is now facing up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine if convicted of illegal re-entry by an aggravated convicted felon.

    The case is only the latest where convicted illegal alien criminals, with prior deportations, are increasingly crossing the U.S.-Mexico border under the Biden administration. Months ago, for instance, five convicted sex offenders and 20 gang members were arrested crossing the border in a single week.

    Since Biden took office, about 5.5 million border crossers and illegal aliens have arrived at the southern border.

    According to the organizer, the government that emerged from the elections should resign, hold new elections and hand over the administration of the country to “pro-national experts.” According to Prime Minister Fiala, the organizers protesting his government are extremists and pro-Russian.

    “Everyone has the right to demonstrate, to express their opinion in this way. We hear these opinions, and we don’t take them lightly. On the other hand, it is also necessary for everyone to think about who is calling the demonstration and for what purpose,” said Fiala, who participated in a memorial service at Vítkov Hill on Friday about the planned protest.

    The defense ministers of fellow EU and NATO members Latvia and Hungary have shared a blunt exchange of views over their respective countries’ approach to the conflict in Ukraine in which Latvian Defense Minister Artis Pabriks accused Hungary of “treason.”

    Hungarian Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky hit back at the accusation, reminding his Latvian counterpart that it is Hungarian fighter jets which are defending Baltic air space.

    “I refuse to allow anyone to condemn or threaten Hungary. We have the right to represent our national interest, peace,” said Szalay-Bobrovniczky. “I respectfully suggest to my colleague Artis Pabriks that he look up to the sky instead,” he added. “The airspace policing tasks of Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania are carried out by the Hungarian Air Force under NATO command. We will not tolerate unfair criticism of Hungary.”

    In an interview with Radio Free Europe’s Russian-language Current Time program, Pabriks sharply criticized EU countries that have refused military aid to Ukraine. “Bulgaria and Hungary’s stance is incomprehensible, tantamount to treason,” the Latvian minister said. He stressed that “Ukraine is fighting for Europe, for democracy, for human rights, and if someone in Europe does not understand this, he is not only going against the interests of Ukraine, but also those of Latvia”. He added that “if the countries concerned, members of the European Union and NATO, oppose the interests of my country, what else is it but treason?”

    Ukraine has suspended most elements of democracy, including banning 11 opposition parties. Ukraine’s top opposition leader was placed under house arrest and a number of media outlets were closed even before the war broke out. Ukraine’s ultra-nationalist elements have since placed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán on a “kill list,” and President Volodymyr Zelensky has been accused of attempting to influence the election process for April 3 national elections in Hungary.

    Hungary has argued that it does not want to be involved in the war in Ukraine, saying that it is not Hungary’s war to fight. Orbán has pointed out that sanctions have harmed Europeans more than Russians and that sanctions on Russia should be repealed by the end of the year.

    Four Gripen fighter jets of the Hungarian Defense Forces, with a total of 50 Hungarian soldiers, will guard the Baltic airspace for a third spell from Aug. 1 until the end of November as part of the NATO commitment.

    The joint permanent mission of the NATO member states, which has been operating since 2004, has the dual objective of increasing the sense of security in the countries of the region — Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania — and improving the cooperation capabilities of the allied and partner forces.”

        1. No, he hasn’t, altho I’ve seen him going thru my yard across the street to O/L’s house. I chased him off a couple of times and I think he gets enough food elsewhere. I just pour a small pile on the cement porch up next to the house, to the right of my front door as I open it. I wouldn’t even have to step outside but I do so he can wind thru my legs, rub, and purr while I pet him a few times. Then he sets to eating and I come inside, while Jake watches from inside. He’s gotten so he stops growling sooner now, and just lays on the floor watching us.

    “An Iowa man saved four siblings from a house fire after making a fortunate mistake when he took a wrong turn and stumbled across the raging inferno. Brendon Birt told local ABC News affiliate KETV that he took a wrong turn while driving in Red Oak last Sunday and spotted the fire starting inside the family’s home.

    “I just felt like somebody was in there because it was so late at night, you know?” Birt said. “I just knew that I had to act quick.” He had a feeling in his gut that there were still people inside. So he began banging on the windows and yelling, “Fire!”

    Ring doorbell video captured the harrowing moments. “Every second that was going by was just getting worse,” Birt told the station about waiting for anyone inside to come out of the blaze. Soon after, three siblings — ages 8, 14 and 17 — ran out the front door of the house as flames swirled on the front porch. Their 22-year-old brother ran through the front door moments later as the fire engulfed the porch more and more, the footage shows.

    “They came out the door [and] I just felt like I just wanted to break down and cry,” Birt said. The siblings said the pounding and screaming woke them as the smoke alarms failed to go off. The oldest sibling, Bryce Harrison, told the local station that he woke up to “an oven of heat and flames on the front wall.” “Everything was just black in the living room,” his younger brother Christopher Lehman said.

    The children’s parents were out of town when they got the frightening call that their home had caught fire with their children inside. Their mother, Tender Lehman, said she was incredibly grateful to Birt. “My kids wouldn’t have made it, man. They’re safe and they’re safe because of him,” she said. “I mean, lives were saved here.”

    Five of the family’s dogs died in the fire, while two survived. The family’s home was completely destroyed by the blaze, but Tender Lehman said she was just thankful her kids made it out uninjured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.”

    An investigation conducted by the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI) has found that sanctuary states in the United States are dishing out millions of dollars’ worth of taxpayer money to illegal immigrants.

    Illegal aliens are ineligible for federal unemployment benefits, with the Federal Unemployment Tax Act requiring states to take precautions to prohibit such people from filing for these claims. However, the three sanctuary jurisdictions of the District of Columbia, Colorado, and New York have handed out a combined $2.715 billion in unemployment benefits to illegal aliens, the Oct. 25 investigation report reveals (pdf). The annual cost to taxpayers will be “much higher” if anti-border activists have their way, the report warns.

    “If, for example, New York revamped their program and made it permanent; the D.C. City Council enlarged its fund; and California successfully implemented its own proposal, American taxpayers would be faced with an utterly staggering price tag of roughly $4,350,000,000 every year—to reward illegal aliens for violating our immigration laws and winding up unemployed on American soil,” the report says.

    New York launched the Excluded Workers Fund in 2021, providing $2.1 billion to over 128,000 illegal aliens.

    In December 2020, legislation passed in Colorado granted $5 million for the Left Behind Workers Fund intended for illegal immigrants.

    Last year, the District of Columbia disbursed $15 million to “excluded workers,” which mostly consisted of the illegal alien population.

    In California, lawmakers introduced the Excluded Workers Pilot Program, which if signed into law will disburse $300 per week to illegal aliens in the state for 20 weeks.

    According to an estimate by the Federation for American Immigration Reform, a sister organization of IRLI, illegal aliens cost America more than $116 billion annually. Providing unemployment benefits to illegal immigrants will just “incentivize further immigration violations,” the report states.
