Creepy Squared: The Mutter Museum

The next time you find yourself in Philadelphia, you may want to consider paying a visit to the infamous Mütter Museum. It was founded in 1863, after Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter donated his collection of medical anomalies, wax models, diseased specimens, and medical equipment to The College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Today, the museum boasts a collection of over 20,000 specimens, with about 15 percent on view to the public—and that’s PLENTY!

While serving as a storehouse for the anatomically peculiar, the museum’s display of tens of thousands of provocative items gives an eerie, beneath-the-surface perspective of what physicians study on a daily basis. Inside you’ll find a wide smattering of abnormal body parts remaining preserved in fluid, skeletal formations — like that of a 7’6” man — that don’t seem quite physically possible and tastefully displayed diseased and enlarged organs residing within glass-encased oak frames.

Medical oddities of all kinds captivate visitors, but highlights include Marie Curie’s electrometer, Dr. Benjamin Rush’s medicine chest, slides of cells from Albert Einstein’s brain, and, most spectacularly, the death cast of Chang and Eng, the original “Siamese Twins,” whose autopsy was performed in the museum. There’s also the “Soap Lady” and a 139 collection of human skulls.

Though it was originally intended for biomedical research, the Mütter Museum is a funhouse for those with a morbid sense of curiosity. But be sure to skip lunch before your visit, lest you lose your meal. In no particular order, here are some of the CREEPIEST exhibits.

1. Chevalier Jackson Foreign Body Collection

The otolaryngologist (a doctor that studies disorders of the ears, nose, throat, head and neck) Chevalier Jackson was a physician who worked at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia in the early 1900s. He became famous for developing new methods to remove foreign objects from the human body, such as things that had become lodged in his patients’ airways. Nearly all the foreign objects he removed from throats, esophagi, and lungs over his 75-year-long career in medicine are on display at the Mütter Museum. These 2,374 objects include “buttons, pins, nuts, coins, bones, screws, dentures and bridges, small toys, among many other items.”

2. Books Bound with Human Skin

You’ll find several anthropodermic books, or books bound in human skin, at the Mütter Museum. The museum’s neighbor, the Historical and Medical Library, holds the largest collection of anthropodermic books in the world. There you can see three books bound in the skin of a woman named Mary Lynch, who died from trichinosis (a parasite that comes from pigs). During her autopsy, a large portion of skin from Mary’s thigh was saved, and three medical books about childbirth were bound with it.

3. Baby Born with No Skull

One of the largest collections at the Mütter Museum is what they call “wet specimens,” parts of the human anatomy preserved in jars of formaldehyde. Because of their fragile nature, the 1,300 jars representing every part of the human anatomy are kept in constant rotation. One particularly disturbing specimen is a baby born without a skull: a fetus that could not sustain life outside the womb.

4. Hyrtl Skull Collection

Mütter’s Hyrtl Skull Collection is made up of 139 human skulls which belonged to Viennese anatomist Joseph Hyrtl, whose life work was the study of the Caucasian population of Europe. Hyrtl wanted to show variation in cranial anatomy as an argument against essentialist theories about race. Each skull is mounted on the wall, and many are inscribed with Hyrtl’s notes about the person’s age, place of origin, and cause of death.

5. Conjoined Liver of Chang and Eng Bunker

Chang and Eng Bunker were Thai-American conjoined twins who were born in 1811 and died in 1874. They were joined at the sternum and shared a liver. Other than that, however, they were two fully-grown, independent men. The two made a life for themselves in North Carolina, and even got married to a pair of sisters. Chang had 11 children, and Eng 10. The fused liver that the two shared is now on display at the Mütter museum, as is a death cast of their torso.

6. Two-Headed Baby

In addition to Chang and Eng’s liver, the Mütter Museum also owns a large collection of conjoined fetal specimens, including a two-headed baby, as part of their wet specimens collection. Known as “Jim and Joe,” this two-headed baby, in a jar full of formaldehyde rests in the Gretchen Worden room, named after the Mütter Museum’s beloved curator who died in 2004.

7. John Wilkes Booth’s Vertebra

History buffs will love the specimen of the spineless (get it?) man who assassinated Abraham Lincoln. Shortly after Booth was killed during a shootout with the police, his body was sent to Washington, where it was autopsied. The three vertebrae (3rd, 4th, and 5th) were removed to allow access to the bullet, and sent to the College of Medicine in Washington, D.C. Some of that vertebrae and a piece of his thorax ended up on display at the Mütter Museum.

8. The Soap Lady

Exhumed in 1875, the Mütter Museum’s Soap Lady gets her name from the waxy, soap-like condition of her remains. Corpses high in body fat are prone to this rare chemical condition, which preserves the body in a waxy coating of broken-down fat called adipocere. Scientists at the Mütter Museum believe the Soap Lady died sometime in the 1800s. Her corpse was exhumed from a local cemetery to make way for construction, and Joseph Leidy, a professor of anatomy at the University of Philadelphia, jumped at the chance to study the unusual phenomenon.

9. Jaw Tumor of President Grover Cleveland

Another highlight of the wet specimens collection is a large tumor that was extracted from President Grover Cleveland’s jaw in 1893. With the country in financial turmoil, Cleveland didn’t want to upset the American populace even more, so he had the surgery on a boat and said he’d had a tooth extracted. Luckily the tumor was benign, but it left Cleveland with a significant disfigurement.

10. The Skeleton of Harry Eastlack

Harry Eastlack, born in 1933, suffered from an extremely rare condition known as fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva, or FOP, in which the repair mechanism in the bones of the body works in overdrive, turning muscle and other tissue into bone. By the time Eastlack died in 1973, just short of his 40th birthday, his entire body had ossified, and he could barely move his lips to speak. His unusual skeleton is on display at the Mütter museum.

If the eye wall and the baby without a skull weren’t enough to put you off your lunch, one of the highlights of the wet specimens is a soccer ball-sized cancerous ovary. Creepy enough to motivate you to book that yearly physical?

    I understand the need for places to study human abnormalities (for doctors, clinicians and the like) but to have a museum open to the public seems morose to me…and creepy as all get out.

    As he fully understands, writer Bob Woodward never got my permission to release tapes of my various interviews with him.Those tapes were allowed only for purposes of making sure that he got my quotes & statements correct for “the WRITTEN WORD,” in other words, for his, nevertheless, highly inaccurate book.The tapes are much better than the book, at least if they were not bludgeoned to death by him to make me look as bad as possible, but he & his publisher had NO right to use my “VOICE” or them!

    Well, it didn’t take long for John Fetterman’s campaign to make excuses for his bumbling performance in Tuesday night’s debate with Dr. Mehmet Oz.

    In a blatantly transparent attempt to make excuses for his candidate’s shoddy performance, Fetterman’s communications director, Joe Calvello, feigned praise for Fetterman after the debate, while also criticizing the closed caption system that they had insisted be implemented in the debate.

    “We are thrilled with John’s performance. He did remarkably well tonight — especially when you consider that he’s still recovering from a stroke and was working off of delayed captions filled with errors. John won countless exchanges, counter-punched aggressively, and pushed back on Oz’s cruelty and attacks,” Calvello said.

    But, both candidates were reportedly given a chance to test the system twice—and Fetterman’s campaign didn’t seem to have any problems with the system when they rehearsed with it.

    “It is unfortunate that Mr. Fetterman is now criticizing the closed captioning process employed by Nexstar during tonight’s debate,” Nexstar communications chief Gary Weitman said in a statement. “Both candidates agreed to the technical set-up for the closed captioning process weeks ago, which was implemented at the request of the Fetterman campaign. Both candidates were offered the opportunity for two full rehearsals with the same equipment used in tonight’s debate; Mr. Fetterman chose to do only one.”

    Weitman also added that Nexstar went above and beyond for Fetterman and ensured that the system effectively accommodated his needs.

    “In fact, Nexstar’s production team went to extraordinary lengths to ensure the effectiveness of the closed captioning process, and to accommodate several last-minute requests of the Fetterman campaign,” Weitman said. “The closed captioning process functioned as expected during rehearsal and again during tonight’s debate. We regret that Mr. Fetterman and his campaign feel otherwise.”

    It’s obvious that Fetterman’s campaign realizes he had a terrible night. They are not only being disingenuous about how “well” he did, they’re attacking the system they insisted be used because they know Fetterman bombed the debate.

    A probe is underway in Iowa after a woman claimed that her late father was a ruthless serial killer who murdered dozens of women before his death about 10 years ago.

    Lucy Studey said her father, Donald Dean Studey, killed a shocking 50 to 70 women over 30 years, according to Newsweek. She also stunningly claimed he enlisted her and her sibling to help him move the bodies of the young women that were allegedly buried near a well on his property.

    “I know where the bodies are buried,” Lucy Studey told Newsweek.

    “He would just tell us we had to go to the well, and I knew what that meant,” Studey also reportedly said.

    “Every time I went to the well or into the hills, I didn’t think I was coming down. I thought he would kill me because I wouldn’t keep my mouth shut.”

    Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope told the Des Moines Register two cadaver dogs sniffed around the site and got “hits” which could indicate the existence of decomposing bodies in the area.
    Donald Studey died in 2013 at age 75.

    “She’s got a hell of a story but we don’t have any proof of anything other than we had a cadaver dog hit,” Aistrope told the Register. “We’ve got to have more proof than that.”

    But he acknowledged the “hits” from the dogs lends credibility to the daughter’s assertion and authorities would “get a game plan here together” with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, according to the newspaper.

    Sheriff deputies began looking into Studey’s story in 2021, but needed to locate the well and get the OK from the current owners of the property and neighboring properties to conduct searches, Aistrope said, according to the newspaper.

    Donald Studey is suspected by law enforcement of luring women, who were mostly sex workers or transients, from nearby Omaha, Nebraska and bringing them to his five-acre farmland before killing them, according to Newsweek.
    Iowa woman Lucy Studey claimed that her late father Donald Studey killed 50 to 70 women over 30 years.

    Studey told the publication her angry and regularly drunk dad would typically smash or kick the heads of his victims inside a trailer where the family lived.

    The father reportedly died at 75 in 2013.
    Studey said her father made her and her brother help bury the bodies on their property.

    Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope said got “hits” at the site of the alleged burials.

    She also said he made sure his children knew what he was doing, though it is unknown if her other siblings have talked with authorities, Newsweek reported. Her brother reportedly killed himself at 39.

    Studey claims she told teachers and priests, as well as law enforcement across Iowa and Nebraska, but “no one would listen to me.”

              2. Even then, I didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to the news until I moved into my house here in 2013. We came back in 2009 so pretty much anything that happened before then, I didn’t know about unless it affected my family directly.

EXCERPT: “Two months after COVID-19 vaccines were rolled out to the U.S. public, a statistically significant vaccine safety signal for myocarditis in males ages 8 to 21 appeared in the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) — but CDC officials waited another three months before alerting the public, according to a new study.

    The study, “Delayed Vigilance: A Comment on Myocarditis in Association with the COVID-19 Injections,” by Karl Jablonowski, Ph.D., and Brian Hooker, Ph.D., P.E., was published on Oct. 17 in the International Journal of Vaccine Theory, Practice, and Research.

    In an interview with The Defender, Hooker, chief scientific officer for Children’s Health Defense, said: “This important paper shows that a strong, statistically significant vaccine adverse event ‘signal’ for myocarditis in males 8 to 21 years of age was seen on the VAERS database as early as Feb. 19, 2021, just two months after the release of the COVID-19 vaccine to the U.S. public.

    “Instead of sounding the alarm regarding this signal, CDC officials buried the connection between COVID-19 vaccination and myocarditis until May 27, 2021. By this date, over 50% of the eligible U.S. population had received at least one mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. Withholding this type of information is criminal.”

    According to researchers at the National Organization for Rare Disorders, myocarditis can result from infections or may result directly from a toxic effect such as a toxin or a virus. “More commonly the myocarditis is a result of the body’s immune reaction to the initial heart damage,” researchers said.

    Severe myocarditis can permanently damage the heart muscle, possibly causing heart failure. In their study, Jablonowski and Hooker recorded and analyzed the increasing incidence of myocarditis as it progressively became a statistically significant “signal” in VAERS, the primary government-funded system for reporting adverse vaccine reactions in the U.S.

    “It [myocarditis] became a discernible measure of harm over time, and here we show when it became statistically significant in the week of February 19, 2021,” the authors explained.

    Only two months later, the VAERS data from the week of April 23, 2021, showed that the discerned level of myocarditis in young men following COVID-19 vaccination had increased to an extreme statistical level.

    Generally, p-values less than .05 are considered to be statistically significant — meaning the observed result cannot reasonably be attributed to chance — and p-values less than .01 are considered to be very statistically significant.”

    Oz, who has the support of former President Donald Trump, has taken advantage of Fetterman’s crime policy to narrow the lead his opponent once enjoyed. “Over the past two years – under the Joe Biden and John Fetterman agenda, violent crime has surged in our communities,” Dr. Oz wrote in a Fox News op-ed. “Just last year, Philadelphia broke its all-time homicide record with 562 deaths, and is maintaining that pace so far this year with more than 400 homicides and over 1,000 carjackings for the first time ever.”

    Crime is an issue top of mind for voters, as evidenced by a recent CBS poll putting Fettemn at only a two-point lead compared to five one month ago. “To the extent there is attitudinal change, it’s partly driven by more Republicans ‘coming home’ toward Dr. Mehmet Oz: the percentage of Republicans saying they’d vote for their nominee is up to 94% from 87% last month,” CBS reported, as the Lieutenant Governor and television personality prepare for their first and only debate. “In Tuesday night’s debate, the economy, gas prices, crime and abortion are among top issues people want to hear about — and most don’t think it is important to hear about Fetterman’s health or Oz’s residency.”

    Fetterman has blamed his loss of momentum on a recent stroke “blown out of proportion by the GOP.” Having difficulty finding words and blundering through interviews has left voters concerned about his fitness for office but that isn’t what has turned the tide for Oz. Voters are resonating with the message that Fetterman’s crime policies are “unacceptable” and “insulting.”

    “For John Fetterman to say we are going to make it easier for people who take other people’s lives to get out of jail, that’s unacceptable,” Holt said. “For John Fetterman or any politician at this point to say to families across the country that we need to let more people out of prison is just so insulting.”

      1. In acting against the sentences rendered for crimes, the parole board actually can become a law unto itself, more powerful than written law, law enforcement, judge and jury.

        We have seen this done by S0r0$ bought and installed prosecutors and judges who release hardened criminals onto the streets. (Wonder if S0ro$ has influenced parole boards too?)

        I wish a writer like Grisham or Whitlow would write a novel to expose all these travesties of justice against Civil Law and Order.

        Fedderman wants to go even further than even parole boards and S0r0$ prosecutors and judges – to outright wholesale release unrepentant criminals. This will most certainly endanger society.

Agreed – IMO, the age of majority should go back to 21 – for alcohol, MJ (free it up so people can grow their own and the research can be done on medical applications – there are TONS of possibilities), entering the military, contracts, etc., etc. Even that is a little young, considering that the portion of the brain that controls judgment is one of the latest to fully develop.

James Comer (R-Ky.), the top Republican on the House oversight committee, demanded information Wednesday from FBI Director Christopher Wray on the Biden family’s links to Bao while Hunter and his uncle James Biden raked in $4.8 million from Chinese government-linked CEFC China Energy in 2017 and 2018.

    Comer wrote that “Committee Republicans are concerned Hunter Biden may have been compromised by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and foreign intelligence services (FIS),” signaling what’s likely to be a major line of inquiry if Republicans reclaim subpoena powers by retaking the House in the Nov. 8 midterm elections.

    The letter says that Bao “worked for the [Chinese government’s] National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), which ‘is in charge of China’s macroeconomic planning’ and approves any major project that receives foreign funding” and therefore “was linked to the Communist Party of China (CCP), her employer before the Biden family.”

    “After infiltrating the Biden family, Bao urged Hunter to encourage Joe Biden to run for president months before he announced and then supplied the Biden family campaign advice related to China,” the letter says.

    Fetterman had sought to avoid a debate, and his campaign has restricted his public appearances.. When he finally agreed to one, Democrats sought to delay the debate until ballots were already being cast by mail, since Democrats are more likely to use that method and more of the party’s vote would already be cast.

    However, given that 82% of viewers said that Republican nominee Dr. Mehmet Oz won the debate, it is likely that some of those Democratic would make a different choice today.

    The Wall Street Journal noted in an editorial Tuesday that the result of the debate might not matter, given timing and vote-by-mail:

    ‘Voters in Pennsylvania Tuesday night finally got a debate between their Senate candidates, Democrat John Fetterman and Republican Mehmet Oz. Mr. Fetterman is still recovering from a stroke, and he relied on closed captions to understand the debate questions. Voters can decide if he allayed concerns about his health.

    Remarkably, though, almost half of the mail ballots requested in Pennsylvania have already been cast and returned, according to the U.S. Elections Project. As of Tuesday, two weeks before what used to be quaintly called Election Day, officials had received 635,428 mail votes out of the 1,310,189 that voters originally requested. That’s 48%. Given the delay between a voter’s mailbox and the local elections office, the true figure is certainly higher.

    Most people continue to vote on Election Day, but the data there aren’t exactly comforting. About five million people voted in Pennsylvania’s 2018 Senate race. Assuming this year’s final turnout ends up being similar, then roughly 10% of the vote could be already cast for Mr. Fetterman or Mr. Oz, before the public even has a chance to see them mix it up on TV.’

    Similar concerns have arisen in other states, where the first debates are being held after the start of early voting and vote-by mail.”

    CDC Adds Declining Math, English Scores To List Of COVID Symptoms

    ATLANTA, GA — After extensive research, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that the declining math and English scores of American students were being added to its list of COVID-19 symptoms.

    “It’s very important to understand that failing test scores among elementary students is a tragic side-effect of COVID and in no way linked to the lockdowns we forced on the American people,” said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, CDC Director and fully vaccinated and boosted COVID patient. “Not only has COVID caused untold amounts of death and destruction around the world but it is now, as we have just decided, lowering the test scores of our students.”

    Sheikh, who serves as assistant professor at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital in New York, said it is possible Fetterman could continue to recover from the stroke he suffered just days before winning the Democratic primary. But most of his improvement have likely already occurred, she said.

    “Essentially what we know is that in the first three to six months is where you see the most improvement,” Sheikh said. “There can be some improvement over the next year, but I think he’s about six months out now; this happened in May. So I think if he was doing therapy right after his stroke, this is probably where he has improved to the most.”

    When Cuomo asked if Fetterman’s brain function is impaired, Sheikh said it is difficult to know how much he comprehends from his answers.

    “In the brain, cognition and language are separated, but there’s so much interaction between them,” she said.

    The doctor acknowledged that if she were a voter in Pennsylvania, she would have deployed concerns after watching Fetterman’s performance.

    “I think from seeing what I saw, the fact that he has difficulty in expressing his thoughts, it would make me question: Is that an isolated issue or is there more to it?” she said. “It would make me want to gather some more information and have him talk more about what are the issues, be more transparent.”
