Good Night, Harry

Harry Houdini’s grand illusions and daring, spectacular escape acts made him one of the most famous magicians of all time. Houdini was actually born Erich Weisz on March 24, 1874, in Budapest, Hungary. One of seven children born to a Jewish rabbi and his wife, Weisz moved with his family as a child to Appleton, Wisconsin, where he later claimed he was born. When he was 13, Weisz moved with his father to New York City, taking on odd jobs and living in a boarding house before the rest of the family joined them. It was there that he became interested in trapeze arts.

In 1894, Weisz launched his career as a professional magician and renamed himself Harry Houdini, the first name being a derivative of his childhood nickname, “Ehrie,” and the last an homage to the great French magician Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin. (Although he later wrote The Unmasking of Robert-Houdin, a study that set out to debunk Houdin’s skill.) Though his magic met with little success, he soon drew attention for his feats of escape using handcuffs. In 1893, he married fellow performer Wilhelmina Beatrice Rahner, who would serve as Houdini’s lifelong stage assistant under the name Beatrice “Bess” Houdini.

In 1899, Houdini’s act caught the attention of Martin Beck, an entertainment manager who soon got him booked at some of the best vaudeville venues in the country, followed by a tour of Europe. Houdini’s feats would involve the local police, who would strip search him, place him in shackles and lock him in their jails. The show was a huge sensation, and he soon became the highest-paid performer in American vaudeville.

Houdini continued his act in the United States in the early 1900s, constantly upping the ante from handcuffs and straight jackets to locked, water-filled tanks and nailed packing crates. He was able to escape because of both his uncanny strength and his equally uncanny ability to pick locks. In 1912, his act reached its pinnacle, the Chinese Water Torture Cell, which would be the hallmark of his career. In it, Houdini was suspended by his feet and lowered upside-down in a locked glass cabinet filled with water, requiring him to hold his breath for more than three minutes to escape. The performance was so daring and such a crowd pleaser that it remained in his act until his death in 1926.

Houdini’s wealth allowed him to indulge in other passions, such as aviation and film. He purchased his first plane in 1909 and set out to become the first person to man a controlled power flight over Australia in 1910. While he did it after a few failed attempts, it later was revealed that Houdini was likely beaten to the punch by just a few months by a Capt. Colin Defries, who made a short flight in December 1909.

Houdini also launched a movie career, releasing his first film in 1901, Merveilleux Exploits du Célébre Houdini Paris, which documented his escapes. He starred in several subsequent films, including The Master Mystery, The Grim Game and Terror Island. In New York, he started his own production company, Houdini Picture Corporation, and a film lab called The Film Development Corporation, but neither was a success. In 1923, Houdini became president of Martinka & Co., America’s oldest magic company.

As president of the Society of American Magicians, Houdini was a vigorous campaigner against fraudulent psychic mediums. Most notably, he debunked renowned medium Mina Crandon, better known as Margery. This act turned him against former friend Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who believed deeply in spiritualism and Margery’s sight. Despite his activism against spiritual charlatanism, Houdini and his wife did in fact experiment with otherworldly spiritualism when they decided that the first of them to die would try to communicate from beyond the grave with the survivor. Before her 1943 death, Bess Houdini declared the experiment a failure.

Though there are mixed reports as to the cause of Houdini’s death, it is certain that he suffered from acute appendicitis. Whether his demise was caused by a McGill University student who was testing his will by punching him in the stomach (with permission) or by poison from a band of angry Spiritualists is unknown. What is known is that he died of peritonitis from a ruptured appendix on October 31, 1926, at the age of 52, in Detroit, Michigan.

After his death, Houdini’s props and effects were used by his brother Theodore Hardeen, who eventually sold them to the magician and collector Sidney H. Radner. Much of the collection could be seen at the Houdini Museum in Appleton, Wisconsin, until Radner auctioned it off in 2004. Most of the prized pieces, including the Water Torture Cell, went to magician David Copperfield.

The Houdini Seances

The reason I am including Houdini in the whole Halloween themed month is the Houdini seances.  In 1927, the year following Houdini’s death, Bess Houdini held the first of several seances in an attempt to contact her deceased husband. Harry had told her he would deliver a message to her in the form of a secret code that would be known only to her, if he were able to do so, from the other side.

She attempted to make contact privately, and she also offered a $10,000 reward to anyone who might be able to deliver the message to her. A medium named Arthur Ford was apparently able to meet the challenge, and Bess publicly accepted the results. Ford stated that he had been able to receive the coded message, which contained the words “Rosabelle believe.”

In January 1929 Bess and Ford participated in a seance in which Houdini purportedly came through. However, this was soon decried in the newspapers as a hoax, with allegations that Houdini’s secret code had already been revealed and that Ford was a fraud. Eventually, Bess did withdraw her support of Ford, and stated that she did not believe he had been able to communicate with her husband.

She continued to hold seances, however, with the final one taking place on Halloween night, October 31, 1936, the tenth anniversary of Houdini’s death. The event was a rather elaborate production staged on the roof of the Knickerbocker Hotel in Hollywood, with an audio recording released later. At the end of it, Houdini had failed to come through, and Bess announced that she had officially given up her efforts to reach him.  Although Bess apparently finally turned out the light, believers everywhere continue to seek a message from the Great Houdini, with seances held on Halloween night each year.

October 31, 1936

“I now reverently turn out the light. It is finished. Good night, Harry.”

— Bess Houdini

Las Vegas stabbing spree suspect in US illegally, has criminal record: report

The man charged with fatally stabbing two people and wounding six others during a crazed rampage on the Las Vegas strip was in the United States illegally and has a criminal record, according to a report.

The 32-year-old alleged attacker, Yoni Barrios, is a Guatemalan national with a criminal record in California, a source with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement confirmed to Fox News.

Barrios was charged with two counts of open murder with a deadly weapon and six counts of attempted murder in the senseless broad-daylight attack.

Barrios had asked a group of women dressed as showgirls to take a picture of him with a knife. When they declined, he began his alleged deadly stabbing frenzy. Maris Digionvanni, 30, was killed in the attack, the girls’ boss told The Post.

The suspect told police that he “thought the women were laughing at him and making fun of his clothing,” according to a police report obtained by KKTV.

  4. buddy we’ve all seen the types of people teacher’s unions protect…i see nothing wrong with allowing veterans under the conditions set forth to become teachers…

“It is absolutely critical that Ohio’s policymakers take meaningful action to address our state’s growing teacher shortage, and the Ohio Education Association appreciates the unique skills and experiences our nation’s veterans could bring to the classroom, but any measure that lowers training and certification standards for teachers would lower the quality of education for our students,” said Ohio Education Association President Scott DiMauro. “This is not acceptable. OEA urges our lawmakers to tackle the systemic issues contributing to our state’s teacher recruitment and retention crisis – many of which are discussed in the OEA Educator Voice Academy cadre’s recent recommendations – to ensure all Ohio students can receive the world-class education they deserve.”

Veterans would also have to have a letter from a former commanding officer that says the individual is qualified to teach; have earned a master training specialist certification; served as a training officer or lead instructor; served as a noncommissioned officer, warrant officer or senior enlisted person; or demonstrated a mastery of a subject area to be taught determined by the school board.

School boards would all assign a mentor teacher to the veterans, and the mentor would be required to hold a teacher’s license obtain through regular methods.

On Thursday, Biden declared that radical changes are required to “literally save the planet” from climate change. The Biden administration is even seeking to phase out gas-powered cars and block all oil and gas drilling on federal lands.

So do his actions match his words?

Obviously not. He is a Democrat.

The Daily Caller reported that on Friday, a day after his alarmist speech, Biden burned 3,866 lbs of jet fuel to fly 72 miles aboard Air Force One to deliver a speech in Maryland.

According to Aviation Inside, Air Force One burns roughly 5,800 lbs of fuel per hour if the aircraft is traveling at the average speed of 598 miles per hour at 35,000 feet.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency’s emissions calculator, Air Force One produced CO2 emissions equivalent to driving 13,678 miles in an average gasoline-powered passenger vehicle.

Fox News reported in September that Biden flew Air Force One to Delaware solely to vote in a Democratic primary, emitting roughly 16,641 lbs of CO2 emissions.

The average cost of travel for Biden is roughly $2,614 per minute.

    It’s not just Biden.

John Kerry’s private jet emitted 325 metric tons of carbon dioxide since he became Biden’s special envoy for climate as he jets around the globe peddling climate paranoia and making empty pledges for clean energy.

    Were these trips unavoidable?

    No!

Biden could have set an example and ordered his administration to stop their air travels and address all meetings via Zoom calls instead.

If they really believed that the planet is in peril — and not only the planet, but the lives of our grandchildren —then these sacrifices would have been worth it.

    But they didn’t.

The allegations came in a shocking new investigation from Axios that was published on Thursday. The report alleges that in the past 12 months, multiple new ‘news’ website have appeared across the country, all run by a company named Local Report Inc.

They do report a wide variety of stories – but sprinkled throughout are news items pushing Democrat lawmakers and policies. Online records show that the Local Report was founded in Tallahassee, Fla. Content is provided for the sites from writers who are employed by another left-wing group, the American Independent. The Independent was founded by David Brock, known for other liberal endeavors such as Fox News watchdog, Media Matters for America.

Other employees at the American Independent include Matt Fuehrmeyer, who previously worked for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and for disgraced Sen. Al Franken, according to his LinkedIn page. Franken’s son is also employed by the organization, as is former Sen. Harry Reid’s son, the Daily Caller reported.

Prior to working as the executive editor of the American Independent, Jessica McCreight was part of President Barack Obama’s communications team, according to her LinkedIn page.

When asked about the connection between the American Independent and the Local Report, McCreight told Axios that the pair had a ‘co-publishing agreement,’ adding that their content is ‘open source’ and they were a ‘partner’ of Local Report’s.”

The Axios report says that the outlets are all based in states that are generally considered swing states in the November elections including Wisconsin, Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Nevada, New Hampshire, Michigan, Georgia, Colorado and Arizona.

Among the titles that are packed with content from American Independent staff are the Milwaukee Metro Times, the Tri-City Record, the Bucks County Standard, the Mecklenburg Herald and the Northern Clark County Herald.

The investigation said the websites come equipped with a certain amount of aggregated local news and sports reporting, accompanied by political commentary and biased news.”

  10. EXCERPT: “Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) said he obtained internal records from a whistleblower alleging 665 FBI employees retired or resigned following misconduct investigations to avoid receiving final disciplinary letters.

Grassley said the whistleblower — whom he did not name — provided an internal Justice Department report that indicated the employees left between 2004 and 2020 and included 45 senior-level employees.

“The allegations and records paint a disgraceful picture of abuse that women within the FBI have had to live with for many years,” Grassley wrote in a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray and Attorney General Merrick Garland. “This abuse and misconduct is outrageous and beyond unacceptable,” Grassley continued.

Grassley’s office said Justice Department officials created the report following an Associated Press story in 2020 that revealed sexual conduct allegations among senior officials in the bureau. The alleged report states the 665 employees left following “alleged misconduct,” but it did not specify it as sexual misconduct, although the document is titled as such.

His office suggested the actual figure could be larger, because the data doesn’t include departures that occurred during or just prior to the start of misconduct investigations. The Associated Press investigation that apparently spawned the report’s creation found that the bureau opted to transfer those facing accusations or allow them to retire.”

EXCERPT: “A five month-old baby boy and his two year-old sister have both been mauled to death by their parents’ two pet pit bulls. Hollace Dean Bennard, five months, and Lilly Jane Bennard, two, were pronounced dead at the scene after being attacked by the dogs in Shelby County, Tennessee, on Wednesday. The youngsters were their parents’ only children.

Their mom, Kirstie Jane Bennard, 30, of Millington, was also injured in the attack while trying to save her son and daughter. She was transported to Regional One Health in ‘critical condition’ on Wednesday, police said. A family friend told DailyMail.com on Thursday that the respiratory therapist is ‘hanging in there,’ but declined to speak further. Bennard’s husband of five years, Colby, who manages a Harley-Davidson dealership in Memphis, was unharmed.

Eight years ago, Colby shared a picture of two pit bulls on Facebook and referred to the animals as ‘house lions’ while chatting with Kirstie. It is unclear if those are the same dogs behind Wednesday’s attack. Further details of how the tragedy unfolded have yet to emerge. The animals have been taken away by the local animal control department, although it’s unclear if they have been destroyed.

From 2016 – not clear if these are the same dogs:

Walkouts at four of TotalEnergies’ refineries have left most of the company’s network of 3,500 gas stations without gas as motorists across France scramble to fill up their cars.

The French government on Friday revealed that 15 percent of the country’s petrol stations were affected by a lack of either one or all fuels. It was keen to stress that the issue did not stem from an actual shortage but rather the strong demand at TotalEnergies’ stations due to a discount per liter of 20 cents; in addition, it mentioned that an ongoing strike had affected supply chains.

Strategic oil reserves will likely be used over the weekend, France’s Energy Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher confirmed, as reported by Reuters. She called on French citizens “to be confident,” insisting that “over 80 percent of petrol stations are functioning as normal.” However, she admitted there were “significant supply tensions” in some regions.

The government has responded by giving exclusive access to some stations to key workers like healthcare professionals, according to the France24 news outlet. Various reports have suggested that motorists residing near Belgium have been crossing the border to fill up their tanks.

Reuters reported on Friday that most of the urban petrol stations around Paris “appeared to be affected by shortages of at least one type of fuel, with most diesel pumps running dry,” and long queues at pumps had been forming as early as Wednesday.

Industrial action over pay is expected to continue for some time, with TotalEnergies announcing recently that wage negotiations will begin in November. The CGT trade union called on its members to strike at two refineries and two storage facilities owned by the energy company.”

  17. 4 of the green goblin gang are identified (not arrested yet) and ALL have prior arrests…IMAGINE
    FTA
New York City has been on high alert since the Green Goblin Gang struck fear and terror on the subways. And while police have yet to apprehend this roving gang of villains, authorities have at least identified the ringleaders. Of course, they all have priors. This is New York City.

Let’s recap our first experience with this gang of green goblins.

The Green Goblin Gang: Women In Neon Green Leotards Attack 2 NYC Subway Riders

The assailants escaped the scene with a cellphone and a handbag, police told the New York Post. pic.twitter.com/07zzz37A8a
    — Ground News (@Ground_app) October 4, 2022

As reported by the New York Post, after an intense investigation, NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig has identified four of the suspects.

Emily Soto, 34, two prior arrests
Mairam Cisse Issouf, 26, one prior arrest
Ciante Alston, 26, three prior arrests
Dariana Peguero, 26, nine prior arrests

We also find out that this wasn’t a targeted assault and robbery. According to Det. Essig, the incident “originally stemmed from an apparent bump on the platform and spilled into the subway car.”

There has been an update on the asset forfeiture case where the FBI seized the items in a privately owned safe deposit box business; the judge ruled that the FBI did nothing wrong so can keep the items they stole. The lawyer representing the owners of the items, who had filed a class action suit on the owners behalf, has said he will file an appeal.

Hopefully, some day, this whole asset forfeiture business makes it to the Supreme Court and finally gets ruled illegal.

  19. can’t watch the video…but this describes it well i think…black man fends off car jacker attacking asian man in his neighborhood
    FTA

In the video, the Good Samaritan, a Black man who wishes not to be identified, can be seen pointing what appears to be a handgun at the alleged carjacker, effectively forcing him away from the victim. Zooming into the video shows the latter throwing back what is presumably the Asian man’s car keys.

“Get the f*ck off my street!” the Samaritan demands before making a warning shot. “You come around here bullying people on my f*cking street, n*gga?”

The man continues to keep the alleged perp at bay by pushing him on the back multiple times until they reach a safe distance.

Background voices are heard in the video as the scene unfolds. One of them, presumably the Asian man, yells “thank you” after his rescuer passes on the car keys.

Miracle Mile Zone 7 Rep. Thao Tran, who also serves as the chair of Public Safety & Wellbeing Mid City West Neighborhood Council, revealed that the incident happened on April 27 of this year at the south of the intersection of Wilshire and Ridgely in Los Angeles’ Miracle Mile area.

Tran tells NextShark that a Mid-City resident provided footage to a Los Angeles Police Department volunteer.

  20. 14 precincts in alaska go to paper ballots, no machine counting voting
    entire article
Voters across the country continue to raise questions about voting tabulation machines.

Concerns about voting machines were only worsened this week as the CEO of an election software company, Konnech Corporations, was arrested for stealing poll worker data in Michigan.

The concerns over voting tabulation machines have led to calls for machine voting to be suspended until more thorough investigations are done to ensure that data is not being mishandled and that they accurately tabulate votes.

In a significant move that could lead to similar decisions being made across the country, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly passed an ordinance that will prohibit the use of voting tabulation machines and make poll workers hand-tabulate ballots for the upcoming midterm elections.

Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-Al.) is running for re-election in Alaska against Trump-backed Republican challenger Kelly Tshibaka and Democrat Patricia Chesbro.

In what is apparently a first for Alaska, the Matanuska-Susitna Borough Assembly passed an ordinance this week that will prohibit the use of voting tabulation machines for borough elections, starting next year.

The new Mat-Su ordinance, approved Tuesday night, caps off a months-long effort from a group of residents determined to ban the use of voting machines spurred on by false claims of election fraud. Last month, the Assembly unanimously voted to use a hand-count to verify the results of the Nov. 8 borough election, but voting machines will still be used.

Borough officials determined that it would be a “great risk” to stop using machines and mandate hand-counting for this year’s borough election because there would be inadequate time “to properly prepare for a change of this magnitude,” according to a memo filed with the legislation. Instead, those changes are set to be in place for next November’s municipal election.

  21. this is a threadreaderapp…amazon selling suicide kits sort of…lawsuit filed…parents sued amazon and were told cbs 60 minutes would do segment…they balked before airing it…

Last Friday, CBS cancelled a segment about our clients suing Amazon for selling suicide kits to their now deceased kids. CBS’ cowardice gave me renewed clarity about how urgent this litigation is. 🧵@naomi_leeds 1/
As background, on Feb 3, 2022 we filed a lawsuit in WA State against Amazon on behalf of the Estate of Mikael Scott. In Dec. 2020 Mikael purchased a chemical from Amazon, 98% pure Sodium Nitrite, for $19.99. 2/
It was prime delivered two days later. He died three days after that. There is no household use for pure SN, a chemical that when mixed with water and swigged causes a very painful death within 20 min. 3/
(NOTE: the product we’re suing about should not be mistaken for curing salt which is only 6% pure SN and used to cure meats.). Starting in April 2021, we began urging Amazon to stop 4/
selling suicide kits to households. Unlike other products that could be used for suicide (i.e. knives, ropes), there is no other use for Sodium Nitrite at this level of purity outside the laboratory. And Amazon was bundling SN with other products to basically create 5/
create a suicide kit — Amazon recommends that purchasers also buy Tagamet to avoid vomiting up the poison, a personal use scale to measure the proper quantity, and the Amazon Edition of the Peaceful Pill Handbook, a suicide manual with an entire chapter on how to die by SN. 6/
Amazon also routinely removed 1-star reviews from grieving family members trying to warn about the dangers. Amazon’s own search engine helped guide people to the product through autofills. 7/
At the time, we were also taking action with Congress and DOJ and the press to stop the pro-suicide forum that directs people to buy this product from Amazon.

Amazon’s lawyers from Perkins told us Amazon would continue to sell SN because they can’t be held liable if 8/
somebody uses one of their products for suicide.

NOTE: it is against the law in our country to aid or assist in another person’s suicide. In 11 states, under exceedingly narrow and legislated circumstances, physicians are allowed to 9/
carefully facilitate the death of a proven terminally ill patient. However, contrary to what Amazon may think, there is no exception in the law that allows for corporate-assisted suicide.

    10/
The day we got the letter from Amazon’s attorney defending their right to continue to sell this product was a turning point in my life. At the same time, my partner in this case and I realized this: Amazon is a serial killer.
    11/
Amazon’s decision to continue selling the suicide product was not out of ignorance or obliviousness. It was an intentional counseled decision.

    1. I’d later find out that two weeks after the Perkins lawyers sent me that letter, Amazon sold and prime delivered 12/
17 year old Tyler M from Santa Cruz, California a bottle of SN – the exact same brand as they’d sold to Mikael. His parents went out to dinner for two hours and that was the last time they saw him alive. 13/
Tyler was an athlete, a musician, a math whiz, weeks away from graduating from high school and had never given anybody a hint that he was struggling.

When we filed the lawsuit against Amazon on behalf of Mikael, Tyler’s parents saw an article about it and reached out to us.14/
We made a motion in the WA State Court to add Tyler as a party. Amazon’s lawyers said on the record that it would be “unfair and inhumane” for the two cases to be combined. The judge granted our motion to combine the cases. 15/
On June 17, 2022 we argued against Amazon’s motion to dismiss the case on account of corporations always being totally immune from any liability for suicide. The judge said she’d have a decision in two weeks. We’re still waiting. 16/
For all these months, we’d deliberately avoided press attention to the case. However, we kept hearing from more and more families whose loved ones purchased SN from Amazon and a couple other small online shops that have popped up. 17/
Even more heartbreaking, we got several cases where the children had consumed the SN, immediately notified their loved ones that they’d ingested it and regretted it, and even though EMS reached them in time, 18/
they didn’t recognize the telltale symptoms, saw no instructions on the bottle, and had to contact poison control as the child died in front of them. There is a very effective antidote for SN: Methylene-blue. 19/
But medical providers don’t know in time to give it. (Macabre as it is, Amazon used to sell ad space on the SN page to a company advertising Methylene Blue) We also had a case where a mom saw somebody had ordered SN from her Amazon account, 20/
she didn’t recognize the product and reported it to Amazon. But they sent it anyway after confirming her order was cancelled.
A news piece seemed essential to alert doctors, emergency medical providers and parents. Plus, maybe it would pressure Amazon to stop selling it. 21/
We figured it could save thousands of lives.

So a couple weeks ago, I reached out to producers on 60 Minutes with whom I’d collaborated with on their Section 230 segment two years ago. 22/

      Liked by 1 person

      1. They told us they didn’t think they could get the 13 minutes they’d need for a 60 Min segment and urged us to work with their news team. They said they could maybe get two five-minute segments on consecutive days. 23/
They told us that there were these two investigative producers who were aggressively and passionately asking to do the piece. We reluctantly said okay. . From the earliest conversations with 60 Minutes and then CBS News, we asked for absolute confirmation 24/
that the network would be willing to talk about suicide – and specifically a method – on the news. We suggested they go talk to suicidologists about how to report it sensitively. 25/
We were assured multiple times that the network was approving the segment and was actively being advised about how to handle it carefully. It would not the first time they had covered suicide. 26/
They said they were doing it during National Bullying month and this would be part of a series where there’d be tons of resources for viewers. I couldn’t believe how 27/
persistent they were in convincing us to let them do the story. Feeling optimistic that their clear dogged passion for the story, plus repeated affirmations of their ethics and expertise, would create a thorough 28/
and professional piece, we agreed to move forward. I told them about Tyler’s case, sent them the complaint, told them about a new filing we were planning for families of a 16 year old and 17 year old 29/
whose loved ones also died from SN that Amazon sold them. I connected them with staff members at Representative Trahan’s office who we’ve gotten really interested in the SN/Amazon issue 30/
and who led the way in sending Amazon a letter last January demanding they account for the SN sales (Amazon blew them off). I gave them the contact information for a toxicology expert. 31/
They wanted to speak to our clients on the record.

We had multiple intense conversations with our clients about what it would mean to participate in a national news story. We vouched for the CBS team and forwarded onto our clients the other pieces they’d done about suicide. 32
Participating was a huge decision for our clients. In one of our cases, the child’s own siblings didn’t know the method she’d used. In another case, the child’s parent was riddled with guilt for obliviously leaving the unopened box containing SN on the counter. 33/
The CBS producers repeatedly assured us they would be kind and careful with our clients. As a lawyer, it is always very scary to introduce a client to the media when they’re dealing with catastrophic trauma and loss 34/

        Liked by 1 person

        1. Doesn’t trot new clients out for press conferences or media alerts. Scrutiny from the media on top of the loss on top of the tumult of suing on top of their digital footprint forever associated with their loss – it’s just too jarring and rarely in the clients’ best interest. 35/
These clients, though, are motivated to save lives and pressure Amazon to stop selling the product. They were willing to put their own needs second if it meant their child’s death could save others.
Last week, while we were hustling to meet a filing deadline on the new case, 36/
, I was in frequent communication – calls, texts, zooms — with the producers who were rushing the story for October. They asked for an exclusive on the new filing. 37/
I let them have a Zoom with one set of parents – though not before asking for double confirmation that the project was going forward, because, I explained, every time the parents have to discuss their child’s suicide, it’s traumatizing and breaks their heart in two. 38/
Then this past Friday, when CBS was in the process of firming up our client’s air travel to NY for filming, the producer called me to tell me he was very sorry. Turns out, he said, that higherups at CBS quashed the story.
          CBS SPIKED THE STORY. 39/
He said it was because they didn’t want to risk anybody dying from suicide on account of their segment. Well, I really let this guy have it.

My clients took it graciously, but they also saw through the explanation. 40/
One of them said, “Everyone is afraid of Amazon, but it will come out when it’s time.” Another said “Maybe the execs at CBS didn’t want to be too hard on Amazon since they have a partnership with Amazon Prime.” 41/
It’s true that if you google “Amazon CBS” these two mega companies are seriously interwoven. CBS has a streaming deal with Amazon, ViacomCBS has a big deal for its entire broadcast footprint on AWS. 42/
And Amazon is the number one television advertiser in the country, if not world.

CBS’ failures have been demoralizing and deeply confusing. If it was really about not wanting to report on suicides, why did they assure us so many times they knew how to handle it? 43
How come they had confidently spotlighted suicide before, but this was different? How could these professionals have treated grieving, devastated families with such callousness? What’s clear to us is that Amazon knowingly profits from suicide. 44/
And proceeds as if it’s too big to be burdened by morality. If no news organization is willing to shine a light on this mass homicide, I’ll do it here on Twitter and in the courts. 45/
You can read the legal complaint we filed on Thursday here. cagoldberglaw.com/wrongful-death… 46/
