The Hermit of Indian Echo Caverns

The legend begins in Chester County, PA in the late 1700’s.  John and Elizabeth Wilson, along with their 2 children, William and Elizabeth, lived on a family farm in East or West Bradford Township in Chester County.  They had modest means, but were known to be a reputable family.  When the children were still young, their mother died and their father remarried.  But the new wife did not care for her stepchildren and urged the father to send them away as soon as they were of age.

At 16, William left the farm to become a stone carver in Lancaster County and Elizabeth went to Philadelphia and either became an employee or a patron of the Indian Queen Tavern.  In early 1784, Elizabeth was seduced by a tavern guest (who soon afterward disappeared) and became pregnant.  When her pregnancy became an embarrassment, she was made to leave the tavern.  She returned to her parents’ home where she gave birth to twin sons.  Later that year Elizabeth disappeared while traveling to meet her lover in Newton Square.  While she reappeared several days later, her twin sons were nowhere to be seen. Their bodies were soon found hidden in the woods nearby and Elizabeth was arrested.  She was found guilty of murder in the first degree and was sentenced to hang.  The execution date was set for December 7, 1785.

William was unaware of his sister’s predicament but one day he mysteriously claimed he was needed in Chester and returned home.  When he arrived at the jail, Elizabeth was finally willing to tell the story of what happened to her sons. William assembled respected officials to listen to her story.  She said that her seducer agreed to meet her at Newton Square but unexpectedly met her in the woods about 2 miles west of town.  He killed the children and swore Elizabeth to secrecy.

On December 6, William presented the confession signed by all the witnesses to the Supreme Executive Council.  The president of the Council was Benjamin Franklin, and its vice president was Charles Biddle. Biddle’s journal includes a brief discussion of the Wilson case and, in addition to court and Council records, is one of the more reputable sources regarding the matter. The Council ordered that the execution be postponed until January 3rd, 1786, in order to allow them more time in which to consider the case.

In the meantime, William went in search of his sister’s lover, but when he found him on a New Jersey farm he denied ever having known Elizabeth. William then began to seek out witnesses who could link the man with the city of Philadelphia and with his sister. He was successful in compiling a list of several people, but he became ill around Christmas and spent some time recuperating at a friend’s home in Philadelphia.

Upon his next visit to the Chester jail, he was horrified to learn that Elizabeth’s execution was scheduled for the following day. He rode to Franklin’s home to request another postponement of Elizabeth’s sentence but had to wait several hours to see him. Franklin felt that it was improper for him to act and referred William to Vice President Biddle. William found Biddle at the State House. Biddle wrote the order, “Do not execute Wilson until you hear further from Council,” knowing that the members of the Executive Council were sympathetic towards Elizabeth and intended to grant a full pardon.

With Biddle’s pardon in hand, William began the 15-mile ride to Chester. He rode down Market Street and approached the Middle Ferry to cross the Schuykill River. Because of heavy rain, the river was dangerously high and choked with ice and debris; the ferry was not in operation. William pleaded with the ferryman for several hours but could not persuade him to operate the ferry. Finally, in desperation, he drove his horse into the icy water. The animal struggled against the current but was struck in the head by a chunk of ice or driftwood just fifty feet from the opposite shore. William swam the rest of the way, and by the time he reached dry land he was approximately 2 miles downstream from where he’d entered the water.

Meanwhile, officials in Chester began preparations for Elizabeth’s execution. The sheriff of Chester was one of the many who had come to believe that Elizabeth was innocent and who, following her confession, suspected that she might be pardoned. He stationed flagmen at intervals along the Queens Highway (4th Street), leading from Philadelphia, who could signal if William were coming with a pardon. Those assembled watched expectantly for a signal but none was seen. Noon arrived, and by law the sheriff could wait no longer. The order was given and the cart was pulled from beneath Elizabeth Wilson’s feet. She did not die outright but showed little sign of struggle. Several long moments passed before the crowd noticed white flags waving along the road from Philadelphia.

William rode to Hangman’s Lot calling, “A pardon! A pardon!” His horse reared at the sight of Elizabeth’s body, throwing him to the muddy ground beneath his sister. The sheriff quickly cut the rope and tried frantically to revive Elizabeth, but it was too late to save her.

After several months in a state of delirium, William returned to work as a stone carver. However, he had lost all interest in society and eventually abandoned it. He began to roam westward across southeastern Pennsylvania, interacting with others only when he needed to negotiate for provisions. In 1802, William came to the place that would be his home for the last nineteen years of his life. The cave (today known as Indian Echo Caverns) where William set up residence is located at the foot of a high bluff, or “palisades,” at the head of a horseshoe bend on the Swatara Creek.

There are many caves in that area, but the Hermit’s cave is particularly large and accessible. The natural entrance is approximately 26 feet wide and was well known to local residents from the earliest times. The “room” that became William’s primary living quarters was over 98 feet inside the cave and around a “corner.” Although natural daylight often reaches that area, particularly late in the day, it is not directly visible from outside. The cave provided shelter and maintained a constant 52 °F temperature. There is a natural ledge, reputed to have been William’s bed, beside which stands a stalagmite that bears marks attributed to the rope ladder used to reach the ledge. William’s possessions were few: a straw mattress, a table and stool, some cooking implements, a Bible and other religious books.

On October 13, 1821, the Harrisburg Intelligencer ran the following notice:

Died lately at his lonely hovel among the hills, twelve miles southeast from Harrisburg, Pa., ——– Wilson, who for many years endeavored to be a solitary recluse from the society of men… His retirement was principally occasioned by the melancholy manner of the death of his sister, by which his reason was partially affected… (He) was observed frequently to be estranged, and one morning was found dead by a few of his neighbors, who had left him the evening previously in good health.

As was the case with his sister, the details and location of William’s burial remain unknown, although it is often assumed that he was buried somewhere on his friend’s farm in Lower Swatara Township.

    1. Good morning! Very interesting story! Sad that he was too late…..where did he get the horse, since his got hit in the head with a chunk of ice….? Borrowed, I assume.

Quiet here, too, this morning. Cool but very humid, with clouds again. Maybe we’ll get some decent rain today…..at least it is cool for my drive to Norfolk. Still way too early, tho – stores aren’t even open yet!

        1. Shopping only. I’ve cut down my smoking a lot but haven’t quit – found a kind that mirrors my usual brand for half the price at a smoke store in Norfolk. And I need creamer for my coffee, as well as a few other items at WM, including bananas for my smoothies.

  4. i have a lot of problems with this story…first of all if a 10 year old is pregnant…that’s RAPE and rape is one of the mitigating factors in providing an abortion. the father needs to be arrested. the story is from the hill so I doubt many aspects of it…
    entire article
A 10-year-old girl was denied an abortion in Ohio after the Supreme Court ruled last week that it was overturning Roe v. Wade, demonstrating the tangible impacts that the high court’s decision is having on patients seeking access to the medical procedure.

A child abuse doctor in Ohio contacted Dr. Caitlin Bernard, an obstetrician-gynecologist in Indiana, after receiving a 10-year-old patient who was six weeks and three days pregnant, the Indianapolis Star reported.

That patient is now heading west to Indiana given that an abortion ban in Ohio, which prohibits the medical procedure when fetal cardiac activity begins, around six weeks, had become effective quickly after the high court issued its decision.

While several groups filed a lawsuit seeking to block the state law from taking effect on Wednesday, an emergency stay of the abortion ban was rejected by the Ohio Supreme Court on Friday, meaning that the ban can be upheld as the case is reviewed, the Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

Ohio is among a number of states that have rolled back abortion access since the Supreme Court eliminated the constitutional right to an abortion. Some laws have been paused pending legal challenges.

But Indiana could soon find itself passing its own abortion law later this month given that a special session has been scheduled for later in July and the legislature is expected to touch on a ban on the medical procedure, WFYI reported.

    1. It’s incest and her young age needs to be taken into account. This is one case where I would agree an abortion SHOULD be done. And the Father needs to be in jail for a very long time!!!! Where was the Mother? What part does she play in this debacle?

  5. EXCERPTS: “Today, free Americans such as we are face another form of slavery, or rule without consent—this one imposed by an oppressive administrative state that regulates even the smallest details of our lives. It seems that we today, unlike our revolutionary forefathers, must prove our liberties exist before we may exercise them. Thus the premise of the Declaration, with its assumption of natural rights, is rejected.

Here again, we are called to assert and defend the truth of natural rights and our fundamental claim to liberty.

The one public figure today who acts consistently in support of this principle is, quite appropriately, the one who may be the closest to the experience of the original form of American slavery: Clarence Thomas. He is also a survivor who escaped the near-death experience of being recruited to black militancy during his college years in the 1960s.
    ——————–
From this most recent account we see in more detail how he came to be the leader of the slave revolt of the 21st century. We see the natural right bases of his Second Amendment and abortion opinions plus his many opinions on the administrative state. This is a slave revolt that affirms human decency and dignity. Thomas wrote these opinions because he is the person who, in public life and on the Court, takes to heart most firmly the principles of the Declaration of Independence.

He is America’s greatest living American.

Thus, when he inveighs against the abuses of “substantive due process,” as he does in the Dobbs anti-Roe opinion, he is not mouthing the now-venerable critique of this fabricated doctrine, he is tying it to the inherent right of self-defense in his Second Amendment opinion. The freedom that Thomas embraces is our natural rights and that freedom is as indivisible as it is inalienable.
    ——————–
The Washington elite and the administrative state that serves it can only be defeated when the people arise in rebellion against it. Thomas himself admonished me back in 1986 that we needed to get the message out about the dangers posed by Washington. Now, almost 40 years later, the whole country is beginning to get it. Self-defense, abortion, and the unfettered rule of “experts” who run powerful agencies—the subjects of Court decisions of the past two weeks—are all facets of the great slavery of our time.

This nation is blessed to have Clarence Thomas as our judge on the Supreme Court. Now the rest of us must strain our souls to match his justice.”

  6. ex police officer breaks down some of the laughable bullshit shown with the arrest of the “patriot front” aka feds.
    FTA
“Okay, let’s talk about this,” the former police officer says. “This is right up my alley. Let’s talk about this group that was arrested in Idaho. As a former federal police officer, I’m gonna tell you this is all bullsh*t. Okay? Let me tell you why.”

“When we arrest and detain an individual to the point where we’re going to place them in restraints, this sh*t comes off,” he said pointing to their hats. “That sh*t comes off,” he said pointing to their masks. “That sh*t comes off,” he said and pointed at sunglasses. “Their belt line is searched for any weapons. Belts would be pulled off in the area of the search.”

“They would not be giving it back until after processing and making bond for their arrest,” he added. “This megaphone right here, I know, would not be left on the individual.”

This refers to the infamous “Abolish the FBI” bullhorn that was widely misreported on the right as an “FBI” bullhorn. As a devil’s advocate question, who puts ‘Abolish the FBI‘ on a microphone, unless you’re the FBI? It has nothing to do with white supremacy. It smacks more of a plausible deniability tactic.

“After placing this individual in zip ties in restraints,” the narrator adds. “This is a false flag of bullsh*t show. None of this coincides with law enforcement procedures for detaining an individual and searching an individual. Hopefully y’all are not falling for this stupid bullsh*t.”

  7. EXCERPT: “While the U.S. Justice Department refuses to enforce a federal law protecting justices, the chief law enforcement official for the Supreme Court is appealing to Maryland and Virginia officials to use local statutes to end the picketing outside the jurists’ homes.

Supreme Court Marshal Gail Curley sent letters to Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan and Montgomery County executive Mark Erlich, raising concerns about the increase In demonstrations since the draft opinion overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked two months ago.

“For weeks on end, large groups of protesters chanting slogans, using bullhorns, and banging drums have picketed Justices’ homes in Maryland,” Curley wrote to Hogan in a letter made public Saturday by ABC News. The Maryland residences of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Samuel Alito and Brett Kavanaugh have been targeted by frequent protests. Last month, Nicholas Roske, 26, was arrested outside Kavanaugh’s home with a gun in what authorities said was a plot to assassinate the justice.

Curley noted Maryland law mandates a “person may not intentionally assemble with another in a manner that disrupts a person’s right to tranquility in the person’s home.” Curley also flagged a Montgomery County statute that states a “person or group of persons must not picket in front of or adjacent to any private residence.”

Several weeks ago, Hogan joined Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin in asking Attorney General Merrick Garland to enforce a federal law that forbids protests trying to influence judges on pending cases.”

It was at the Glastonbury Festival 2022 in the United Kingdom. The climate change agenda was on full display for several days, but when things wrapped up, attendees left behind fields literally plastered with trash.

She [Greta Thunburg] left the stage, and the crowd left the field, and the garbage remained. Some 800 acres.

“Pictures from the event show what looks like a massive trash dump, with chairs and litter strewn across the entire area. They created a literal sea of trash – I don’t think this is the type of coming together she was talking about,” the commentary said.

    1. EXCERPT: “I’m going to return to a theme that I’ve harped on in the past. Too many conservatives have bought into the “back the blue” nonsense in response to the “defund the police” movement and BLM rioting. This is misguided. Police aren’t guarantors of freedom; they are the enforcers of the administrative state. Police unions and cliques of senior police officers are one of the major forces against gun rights. Time and again, you find the police cheerfully enforcing the most shameful regulations. During the “pandemic,” police in (at least) New York and New Jersey broke up funerals and gatherings in private homes. They arrested people in empty parks and on deserted beaches. They arrested people for not wearing masks. Their record on protecting the First Amendment rights of Christians is similarly checkered. Dearborn, Michigan, had to pay a substantial settlement because the police arrested Christian preachers outside the venue of a Muslim street fair. Earlier in “Pride” month, police in Coeur d’Alene threatened to arrest Christian ministers presenting a message counter to the depravity going on (see Coeur d’Alene Police Threaten Preachers With Arrest to Protect Gay Pride Event in City Park). And now we have this.

The police are on the side of the people who write their checks. Period. If you think you can rely upon the police to act as a bulwark for your rights in the face of a hostile government, you deserve whatever misfortune befalls you. If you want to support police departments that treat hooded Antifa thuglets as a privileged class and street preachers as the enemy, you should probably reconsider your political philosophy. We should support law enforcement to the extent that they are keeping our communities safe. Beyond that, we owe them nothing. When they act lawlessly to keep Gay Pride exhibitionists from having their feelings hurt, they have forfeited the right to our support.”

        1. I see the laziness and complacency right here! The biggest issue here is meth – the local cops spend all their time on that and other federal charges that, by rights, should be handled by the State or County Sheriff. No-one ever gets speeding tickets here because the cops don’t pay attention to such things. I begged them to set up radar in my driveway – Jerry told me they were working on 5 felonies and didn’t have time to worry about those things. SMDH

  10. From The Bee:

“NEW YORK, NY — Just days after being sentenced to 30 years in prison, R. Kelly walked free this morning after it came to light that he was actually one of Ghislaine Maxwell’s clients, and therefore protected from any consequences of his actions.

“We are so, so sorry for the embarrassment we have caused Mr. Kelly,” said lead prosecutor Dean Baker. “We remain deeply committed to protecting the identities of the powerful men who used Ms. Maxwell’s services to sexually abuse minors. We apologize to Mr. Kelly for the mistake and have booked him a nice trip to a private island as recompense.”

While grateful for his quick release, Mr. Kelly reportedly plans to sue the state. “Yes, I absolutely participated in the trafficking and sexual abuse of young women over decades,” said Mr. Kelly in a statement. “But hey, we’ve all agreed to just pretend that Ms. Maxwell trafficked girls to ‘no one’. Since I am one of her clients, the state was never supposed to reveal my identity and ruin my good name.”

Mr. Kelly had avoided telling prosecutors about his connection to Ms. Maxwell as his knowledge of the names in her book would put him at risk. “Obviously, the people on that list have the power to take you out if they think you might talk,” said Mr. Kelly. “Which is why I’m getting on a plane right away and getting out of the country.”

At publishing time, Mr. Kelly was seen boarding a private jet with a pilot named Hill R. E. Clintonovich.”

Many of the top-level government officials would have been in position to help Hunter Biden’s business aspirations in China during father’s term as vice president from 2008 to 2016. Throughout that period, he infamously looked to capitalize from his family name and connections — often while his father conducted sensitive state business.

As for the Google braintrust, one former exec there told The Post that Hunter Biden sought the tech giant’s cash for Chinese ventures, and that several of the company’s bigwigs wound up working for the Obama-Biden administration during his father’s vice presidency.

Among the names and personal cell phone numbers of the dozens of government officials and federal employees found in the infamous laptop Hunter Biden abandoned at a Delaware computer repair shop in April 2019: John Kerry and Max Baucus, who served as Secretary of State and U.S. Ambassador to China, respectively, during the Biden vice presidency. The Post reached Kerry’s answering machine when it called the number listed in the laptop. Baucus had a Chinese phone number listed and The Post was unable to reach him.
    ———————
Bruce Quinn — who is listed in the hard drive as a “Director for Implementation” at the US Trade Representative office of China, Hong Kong and Taiwan — said he had no idea why he would be among the names in the hard drive.

“I have never met him. I can’t even imagine,” Quinn told The Post. “Back then I used to go to all kinds of conferences and seminars. There is no doubt he could have attended one of the events with me.”

All of the others named as US-China contacts in Hunter’s address book either declined to comment or did not respond to requests for comment from The Post. They include:
    ——————–
“Once again, this raises questions about the extent to which Hunter Biden used his father’s name for personal gain. Why does Hunter have these contacts? Did he ever meet or contact these individuals in their official capacity? And if so, how did those contacts benefit Hunter, his father, and Biden Inc.?” Sen Ron Johnson (R-Wisconsin) told The Post.”

  12. Entire Article @ ZeroHedge: “A swarm of earthquakes rattled South Carolina and appeared to be getting more powerful. About 30 quakes have hit the state this year, and geologists are stumped about what’s causing “earthquake swarms” similar to those felt in Southern California.

Two earthquakes hit Elgin, South Carolina, on Wednesday. The first was a magnitude 3.5, and the second 3.6, according to data from the United States Geological Survey. A 3.4 magnitude earthquake hit the state days before, while a stronger 3.9 rattled parts of the Georgia-South Carolina border on June 18.

Wednesday’s earthquakes were the strongest since a magnitude of 4.1 struck the state in 2014.

South Carolina’s Emergency Management Division shared a video of Wendy Bohon, an earthquake geologist at the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology in Washington D.C., who said about 30 quakes struck in the year’s first half. She said the swarm of quakes is different than others because “there is no mainshock, or a larger earthquake that happens first then there are lots of smaller earthquakes that happen afterward … in this case, the swam of quakes are happening a few every week without a large shock.”

The emergency agency also tweeted the state does have several fault systems and is “one of the most seismically active states on the East Coast.” However, some geologists are puzzled at why so many swarms are happening. “Most earthquakes occur where the earth’s plates come together, and they’re the result of the tension and the stress that builds up as those plates are grinding and moving, slamming into each other. That’s not happening to us here on the East Coast.

“But there are ancient fault lines here from in the past when continents had slammed together … and they are still building up stress and strain but on a much, much slower time scale,” Bohon told the Weather Channel.

“If you can figure that out, you should go get your tux and pick up your Nobel Prize,” Thomas Pratt, regional coordinator of the Geological Survey’s earthquake hazard program, told The State newspaper. “The Eastern United States, in general, is not on a plate boundary, so it’s a mystery in the scientific community why in this exact location, in the middle of a plate, something would trigger this.”

Could the rumblings under ground suggest the next big quake is nearing? The last powerful quake to shake the state was a magnitude 7.3 in 1886.”

  14. good article (in its entirety below) discusses how ultra maggot is INCREASING greenhouse gases not reducing them…
    article

Here’s an amazing but true statistic. After more than a decade of declining carbon emissions here in the United States, in 2021, President Joe Biden’s first year in office, emissions rose.

In other words, not only have Biden’s energy policies been a disaster for our economy and national security as we have become more dependent on Russia and Iran, but they haven’t worked as a global warming solution.

To understand the utter futility of Biden’s “renewable energy” crusade, we must go back about 15 years in time to when the amazing shale revolution, thanks to energy pioneers such as Harold Hamm of Oklahoma, the man who drilled the Bakken Shale in North Dakota, began. These new drilling techniques have vastly expanded America’s natural gas production over the past decade and turned America into the world’s leading oil and gas superpower.

Because clean natural gas production soared and replaced coal as the No. 1 source of power generation, not only did America get rich off these bountiful resources but we also reduced our greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, over the six years covering 2014 through 2020, we led the world in our reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. Our emissions fell by 22%. That was more than former President Barack Obama’s cap-and-tax plan would have reduced these emissions.

Ironically, the 10-year trend of declining carbon dioxide emissions actually ended when Biden took office. The conventional explanation for this is that as the economy opened up after COVID-19, emissions rose. People were flying less and driving their cars a lot more.

But that is only part of the story. Iconoclastic environmentalist Michael Shellenberger explains the bigger story:

“In 2021, emissions in the U.S. increased mostly because of increased coal use, *not* because of higher econ growth. Why? Because nat gas became more expensive. Why? Because of inadequate supply. Why? Chronic ‘under-investment in production & pipelines, thanks to ESG & climate activists,'” he wrote recently.

We need to add Biden’s war on fossil fuels to that mix. The Energy Department data confirms that in 2021, coal use rose in the U.S. and natural gas consumption fell. That was because Biden’s Green New Deal agenda made coal a more attractive alternative in terms of costs.

So Biden’s agenda has backfired. More evidence rolls in from the rest of the world. Germany has acknowledged that it will burn more coal in the years ahead to get cheap power. But they aren’t going to get much of it from the U.S. Rather, they’ll get it from China, which has tripled its coal output and doesn’t care at all about whether its increased production will negatively affect the environment. China has among the laxest environmental laws in the world. So none of this is stopping climate change.

China has been one of the biggest winners from the Biden war on energy. The second winner is Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, who is waltzing to the bank. Russia has made $100 billion selling oil and gas to the U.S. and others at inflated prices.

Meanwhile, Biden’s war on coal production at home has led to a more than doubling of the world price of coal, and in some cases, the price increases in Europe have risen tenfold because of mining restrictions.

I don’t oppose coal production, and I believe the environmentalist movement’s crusade against coal as part of our energy mix makes no economic sense. We are simply displacing West Virginia and Pennsylvania coal miners with Chinese mining. We need coal in our energy mix, as even the Germans now admit.

Then there is the collateral damage of $100 billion of lost annual output in the U.S. because of the anti-energy climate change agenda. Again, none of this makes any sense. Why are we sacrificing our own economic opportunities and handing them to China on a silver platter?

Biden, however, could not be bothered to care. At the NATO conference this past week, he chattered about the virtues of windmills and solar panels, as if the U.S. is not experiencing an energy crisis of his own making.

What all this means is that if we want to save our economy from raging inflation and at the same time save the planet, we should be producing all of the U.S. energy we can.

The reality is, if the GOP had any balls at all, they would say this to the 40 million criminal illegal alien invaders and everyone in the swamp who advocates for them:

“Listen, if you’re an illegal alien, you aren’t entitled to be seen or heard on a political level in our country of LAW AND ORDER. Your opinion and the opinions of your criminal illegal alien family members regarding our national affairs and how we run our country is not of concern to us. We are a sovereign nation of rules, and we have a border which you desecrated and violated. Now, you can either leave by yourself or we will have you detained and deported by armed ICE agents in the next 24 hours. How would you like to proceed?”

  16. great article…also posted in its entirety written by a “disillusioned environmentalist”
    article
This essay by a disillusioned environmentalist is one of the best, and most honest, pieces I have seen in a long time. It can’t have been easy to write: “I wasted 20 years of my life chasing utopian energy.” Here are some highlights, but please do read it all:

[B]y 2008, I started to see cracks in my beliefs. The Obama administration had earmarked billions of dollars in federal funding to create jobs in the energy sector, and my company won multi-year contracts valued at over $60 million. Creating jobs and making buildings more energy-efficient were worthy goals. But the project was an utter failure. It didn’t get anywhere close to achieving the goals that the government had set. But what was really shocking to me was how the government refused to admit the project had failed. All of its public communications about the project boasted about its effectiveness.

Government is the largest and most selfish special interest group in our society.

I started to realize that I had accepted as true certain claims about energy and our environment. Now I began to see those claims were false. For example:
    ***
    * I used to think that the world was transitioning to solar, wind, and batteries. This, too, was false. Trillions of dollars were spent on wind and solar projects over the last 20 years, yet the world’s dependence on fossil fuels declined only 3 percentage points, from 87% to 84%.

    * I used to believe nuclear energy was dangerous and nuclear waste was a big problem. In fact, nuclear is the safest and most reliable way to generate low-emission electricity, and it provides the best chance of reducing CO2 emissions.

This is both wise and succinct:

Here are eight principles that can help us evaluate energy options that will give us the best chance to bring about successful energy reform that protects both people and the planet.

    1. Security: Does an energy source enable a country to maintain its autonomy? Controlling access to critical minerals and natural resources to make affordable, reliable energy is a precondition for liberty and self-determination. Relying on energy imports or minerals from other countries puts a nation at risk.

Amen! Interesting that this environmentalist puts security first. That reflects a growing consensus that stems partly, but only partly, from Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and related developments.

    2. Reliability: Can people and businesses reliably access energy when they need it? A reliable energy system provides power 24/7/365.

Our current policies are wantonly throwing away the reliability that an earlier generation took for granted. We likely will see the results this summer, and in any event, soon enough.

    3. Affordability: Is the energy source easily affordable for households and businesses? The cost of energy affects the cost of everything else. If energy is not affordable, businesses can’t make the products we want, and people will freeze to death in their own homes.

    4. Versatility: How many different kinds of machines can the energy source power? We need energy to power machines that mine, drill, pave, fly, cut, pump, filter, transport, compact, excavate, grade, and lift.

    5. Scalability: How many people can use the energy source across how many places? Wind, solar, and water resources are often located far away from where people live and work, making it difficult and expensive to transport the energy to where it is needed.

    6. Emissions: What are the energy source’s effects on air pollution, GHG emissions, and water quality? Sources of emissions include mining, transportation, and electricity production.

    7. Land use: What are the energy source’s effects on wildlife, habitat, farmland, viewsheds, and coastlines? For example, a typical 1,000-megawatt US nuclear power plant needs little more than 1 square mile to operate. Solar farms need 75 times more land to produce the same amount of energy. Wind farms need 360 times more.

This last is a major issue that Robert Bryce has highlighted persuasively. It would take land area equal to twice the size of the State of California to meet the U.S.’s current electricity needs with wind power, assuming it could be done at all. That simply isn’t going to happen.

    8. Lifespan: How long will a source produce energy? Nuclear plants can operate for over 80 years and run for 100 years if they are well-maintained. By contrast, solar panels and wind turbines last only about 20 years.

My colleague Isaac Orr refers to wind turbines as disposable power plants due to their short useful lives.

Steve has noted from time to time that smart liberals are getting off the “green” bandwagon and putting their support behind nuclear power. Add one more to the list. Via InstaPundit.

  18. a mother’s pain on display in ny after defendants get “slap on the wrist” sentences for murdering her son–a vet and a father–the murder was caught on video
    article
The inconsolable mother of a US Army veteran who was stabbed to death in a Harlem brawl went off on Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg in court Wednesday, accusing the besieged prosecutor of botching the case.

“I don’t want to hear nothing else, Yoran,” Madeline Brame screamed at prosecutor Dafna Yoran as one of the defendants in her son’s murder case got just seven years for his role in the 2018 slaying.

“Take that restorative justice bulls–t and shove it up your asses,” Brame yelled in Manhattan Supreme Court. “Not for murder.”

The courtroom outburst came as defendant Travis Stewart got the slap-on-the-wrist prison term after pleading guilty to gang assault in a deal struck with Bragg’s office.

Brame’s son, Hason Correa, 35, a vet and married father of three was beaten and stabbed to death in 2018 after getting jumped by at least four people, including Stewart, during a scuffle in Harlem. His 66-year-old father was seriously injured in the melee.

Another defendant, Mary Saunders, served about one year in jail while the case lingered in court before she pleaded guilty to assault, also as part of a plea deal, earlier this year and got no extra jail time.

Her two brothers, James and Chris Saunders, remain in jail, and will both go on trial for the murder, prosecutors have said.

Prosecutors said earlier this year that it would be difficult to make a case against Stewart and Mary Saunders.

But the slain vet’s grieving mom slammed the prosecutor on the case, accusing of her sitting “with her tail between her legs” since she was assigned to it.

Brame said if the original prosecutor on the case, who has since left Bragg’s office, were still there “all four of [the defendants] would have went to trial,” predicting that “a jury would have decided they were guilty based on the video evidence and the 33 witnesses!”

She also unloaded on defense lawyer Toni Messina.

“Bulls–t! Bulls–t! Bulls–t!” Brame yelled in court. “Take your restorative progressive justice bulls–t and shove it up your ass, Messina!”

Bragg’s office pointed out that James and Chris Saunders would still go on trial when asked for comment.

Prosecutors have said that while the 34-year-old Stewart had been involved in the fight, he wasn’t part of the brawl when James Saunders allegedly took out a knife and stabbed Correa nine times.

Yoran also said during Mary Saunders’ hearing earlier this year that prosecutors “do not believe that we can prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Mary Saunders knew that her brother had a knife, or that she shared the intent to kill Hason Correa.”

In a scathing letter to Bragg and Gov. Kathy Hochul earlier this month, Brame slammed the DA for not consulting her before cutting the plea deals with Stewart and Mary Saunders.

“You violated my rights as a crime victim to be fully informed and to be heard,” the grieving mother wrote. “Why would you dismiss murder charges against half of the participants when the murder and their roles were caught on video?”

In court Wednesday, Brame’s pain continued to surge to the surface.

“In the four years that I sat through this I never missed a court date,” she said. “I never once saw one ounce of remorse from Mr. Stewart. I saw smiles, waving, blowing kisses like he’s a rock star. Not one drop!

“He took everything from us when he took my son. He took my grandchildren’s father.”

  19. couldn’t happen to a better person…bwahahahaha…omar booed for 10 minutes at concert…
    FTA
At a concert in Minneapolis celebrating Somali Independence Day, Representative Ilhan Omar took the stage for what she thought would be a friendly audience. They were anything but.

Ilhan Omar got booed onstage at a concert featuring Somali singer Soldaan Seraar in Minnesota last night.
People in the crowd chanted “Get out!” & shouted “Get the f*ck out of here!”. pic.twitter.com/sggii7h6sO

    According to The Gateway Pundit:

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) was booed and jeered off the stage by a crowd of thousands of Somali-Americans at a concert in Minneapolis Saturday night celebrating Somali Independence Day that featured popular Somali singer Suldaan Seeraar. The audience at the Target Center booed and cursed Omar for a reported ten minutes even as others on stage tried to calm them down. Cries of, “Get out!”, “Get lost!”, “Get the f*** out of here!” and “Shut the f*** up” could be heard.

Democrats and RINOs across the country have avoided crowds when they aren’t sure the audience will be receptive to them. The Biden/Democrat reign in Washington DC has been devastating to the vast majority of Americans, so pro-Biden politicians have been reluctant to show their faces in public.

  20. I have returned from my trek to Norfolk. Had to get gas in Pierce to make it to Norfolk – $4.49/gal. Did my shopping, not many people at WM and I didn’t pay much attention to the shelves, just went for the handful of items I was looking for. Stopped to see my friend, Glen – woke them up – ooops! They sat outside late last night around the campfire, celebrating the 4th a little too late! LOL I called Michael – he said he was standing there nekkid, with foam over half his face, since he had to go to work at 12. I mentioned getting gas and he told me T-Bone had dropped their price to $4.25/gal, so I decided to go that way and fill up my truck and my gas can, before stopping to chat with him – I told him to put some clothes on that naked body before I got there and he laughed.

He’s having a hard time dealing with the idiot public but hopefully, I helped him talk thru it and realize he just HAS to put up a wall and not take everything personally if he is going to work with the public. Thankfully, he has a couple of other good people to work with but only 2 – the manager and the main corporate repair guy, who is on vacation at the moment. And he only has to work from 12 – 2 today so it will be a short one.

      1. It was – not much traffic, no-one getting in my way, nice and cool, no hold ups anywhere…..very nice! It was a good time to be out-and-about. I was also checking out the crops. The irrigated fields look really good, corn and beans; non-irrigated, not so much but not bad yet. A lot of hay being baled – all that spring rain helped that a lot.

  21. Riiiiight…..come up with a NEW jab to replace the jab that is fucking up and GIVING them polio and try again….is this what you’re fricking saying??!!??

EXCERPT: “Health officials in the U.K. this month identified the country’s first polio outbreak in 40 years, and believe the outbreak was caused by a strain of polio found in the oral polio vaccine.

Health officials in Britain warned parents on June 22 to ensure their children have been vaccinated against polio after multiple closely related versions of the virus that cause the disease were found in sewage water at the London Beckton Sewage Treatment Works — the largest water treatment plant in the U.K.

“The Global Polio Laboratory Network has confirmed the isolation of type 2 vaccine-derived poliovirus (VDPV2) from environmental samples in London, United Kingdom, which were detected as part of ongoing disease surveillance,” the World Health Organization (WHO) states on its website.

The U.K. Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said it believes the virus was “vaccine-derived,” meaning it came from someone who received the live polio vaccine. That person then passed the virus to individuals in London, who shed the virus into their feces.

The viruses’ genetic sequences suggest “there has been some spread between closely linked individuals in north and east London,” the UKHSA said.
    ———————-
People vaccinated with the live oral polio vaccine (OPV) shed traces of the virus in their stool — which eventually end up in sewage wastewater, NPR reported. Scientists believe a person brought the virus into London and then spread it to others who were unvaccinated. “We are urgently investigating to better understand the extent of this transmission,” Vanessa Saliba, an epidemiologist who consults for the UKHSA, said in the statement.”

  22. EXCERPT: “The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday dealt another blow to Bayer AG’s effort to defend itself against ongoing litigation over allegations that Roundup herbicide causes cancer, denying the company’s request for a review of a California trial loss.

In declining to take up the case, the court let stand an $87 million award won by Alva and Alberta Pilliod. The jury originally ordered more than $2 billion in damages for the married couple, but the award was later cut by the court. Each of the Pilliods alleged they developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma after extensive use of Monsanto’s Roundup products.

Bayer inherited the liability for that case and tens of thousands of similar lawsuits when it bought Roundup-maker Monsanto in 2018. The lawsuits allege that Roundup causes non-Hodgkin lymphoma and that Monsanto long knew of the cancer risks but failed to warn its customers. The litigation began in 2015 after the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, as a probable human carcinogen with a noted association to non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Bayer maintains that the weedkiller does not cause cancer and had hoped the Supreme Court would find that federal law supersedes state laws with regard to warning language on product labels.”
