Tomorrow, June 14th, is Flag Day, so I thought we could all use a refresher on flag etiquette. I am bringing this info from military.com, an article dated June 11, 2020:

The U.S. Flag Code formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used.

The following is a list of do’s and don’ts associated with Old Glory, the U.S. Flag.

When displaying the flag, DO the following:

  • Display the U.S. flag from sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs in the open. When a patriotic effect is desired the flag may be displayed 24-hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
  • When placed on a single staff or lanyard, place the U.S. Flag above all other flags.
  • When flags are displayed in a row, the U.S. flag goes to the observer’s left. Flags of other nations are flown at same height. State and local flags are traditionally flown lower.
  • When used during a marching ceremony or parade with other flags, the U.S. Flag will be to the observer’s left.
  • On special days, the flag may be flown at half-staff. On Memorial Day it is flown at half-staff until noon and then raised.
  • When flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. By “half-staff” is meant lowering the flag to one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff.
  • When the flag is displayed over the middle of the street, it should be suspended vertically with the union (blue field of stars) to the north in an east and west street or to the east in a north and south street.
  • When placed on a podium the flag should be placed on the speaker’s right or the staging area. Other flags should be placed to the left.
  • When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall (or other flat surface), the union (blue field of stars) should be uppermost and to the flag’s own right, that is, to the observer’s left.
  • When displayed in a window it should be displayed in the same way — with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street.
  • When the flag is displayed on a car, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender.
  • When the flag is used to cover a casket, it should be so placed that the union is at the head and over the left shoulder. The flag should not be lowered into the grave or allowed to touch the ground.

When saluting the flag DO the following:

  • All persons present in uniform (military, police, fire, etc.) should render the military salute. Members of the armed forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute.
  • All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.

When stowing or disposing of the flag, DO the following:

  • Fold in the traditional triangle for stowage, never wadded up.
  • The flag should be folded in its customary manner.
  • It is important that the fire be fairly large and of sufficient intensity to ensure complete burning of the flag.
  • Place the flag on the fire.
  • The individual(s) can come to attention, salute the flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and have a brief period of silent reflection.
  • After the flag is completely consumed, the fire should then be safely extinguished and the ashes buried.
  • Please make sure you are conforming to local/state fire codes or ordinances.

Quick list of Flag Etiquette Don’ts:

  • Don’t dip the U.S. Flag for any person, flag, or vessel.
  • Don’t let the flag touch the ground.
  • Don’t fly flag upside down unless there is an emergency.
  • Don’t carry the flag flat, or carry things in it.
  • Don’t use the flag as clothing.
  • Don’t store the flag where it can get dirty.
  • Don’t use it as a cover.
  • Don’t fasten it or tie it back. Always allow it to fall free.
  • Don’t draw on, or otherwise mark the flag.
  • Don’t use the flag for decoration. Use bunting with the blue on top, then white, then red.

    DesJarlais disagreed that student loan forgiveness can help stimulate the economy since it would merely shift the burden of debt from borrowers to other taxpayers.

    “It may help those people who are irresponsible, but the ones that are out there working and paying taxes — now they’re going to be saddled with the burden of, if you want to call these other people’s mistakes or borrowed money management,” DesJarlais argued.

    The bill would only affect direct, blanket loan forgiveness, but it would not affect various incentive programs.

  6. Good morning! I have my small flag on the ladder but my big flag will NOT fly again until we have a legitimate President! Going to be hot and muggy again today – already 77 and humid and it’s only 6:30 here!!!! There’s a nice breeze but it’s not gonna help much today!

    Assuming Donald Trump runs for the presidency once again—and he’s giving every indication he will—this is the kind of COVID agenda the America First Movement will expect of him. It’s not enough to boast of his efforts to develop vaccines in record time.               i do think hearings on covid, pence and fauci would be instrumental in regaining some trust if they can expose it. and impeachment hearings on garland who refuse to enforce federal laws…
              we cannot simply move on if we regain the majority. there has to be consequences for the left

      1. I think my brother still works for them in KY…IIRC, when they were here for Mom’s BD, he said he had a few years to go before he can retire. He went to work for them not long after he got his CPA many years ago. My bitching about that sale here in NE is what caused him to request that I delete his e-mail addy! LOL

Many on the wrong side of that divide require equipment, digital skills, financial resources, and more to realize the Internet’s full potential.     Whether achieving digital equity through expanded broadband access is a laudable goal or not is separate from the absurdity of spending $300 million just to come up with a plan for it.”

      A: Levin’s amendment makes lawful the spending which is now unconstitutional. And his amendment does nothing to control spending:

      Levin substitutes a “budget” [which permits spending on whatever people in the federal government want] 1 for the enumerated powers listed in the Constitution; and, while it pretends to limit spending to income, it actually permits Congress to suspend the spending limit and to continue to raise the national debt limit.

      So! Like all other Balanced Budget Amendments, Levin’s legalizes the present unconstitutional spending and does nothing to curb spending. It legalizes the status quo. And it guts our Constitution by erasing the enumerated powers limitations on spending.

      Q: What about Randy Barnett’s version of a Balanced Budget Amendment? [See Barnett’s 8th amendment here.]

      A: Randy Barnett, law professor, redefines “unbalanced budget” to mean a budget where the national debt is greater than it was the previous year. [Yes, you read that right.]

      Barnett’s amendment doesn’t address the unconstitutional spending which caused the massive debt.

      And it delegates sweeping new powers to the President to stop funding anything he doesn’t want funded. E.g., it permits him to ban appropriations authorized by the Constitution, such as all funding for our military (which is authorized by Art. I, Sec. 8, clauses 11-14).

      Q: What is the real purpose of all versions of the Balanced Budget Amendment?

      A: The sole purpose is to remove the enumerated powers limitations on the federal government and give it general & unlimited powers.

      Folks! You must read the texts of the proposed Balanced Budget Amendment s and see what they actually say. Do not stop with the name and just read in your own understanding of what it means to “balance a budget.”

    Founders James Taylor and Jason Luo had planned to import electric delivery vans from China and assemble them at a former General Motors Hummer factory in Mishawaka, Indiana. Both men resigned in early February after Electric Last Mile accused them of making improper stock purchases just before the company announced the SPAC merger in December 2020. The company listed on the Nasdaq in late June 2021 in a SPAC transaction that netted it about $379 million.

    TUCKER, Ga. (AP) — Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams is proposing a big teacher pay raise in her run for governor, saying Republican Gov. Brian Kemp’s much-touted $5,000 across-the-board increase is not enough to recruit new teachers and retain current teachers.

    “We are losing the fight for our children’s future,” Abrams said Sunday as she accepted the endorsement of the Georgia Association of Educators. “We need a governor who does not see education as an election year gimmick, but sees our responsibility as a guarantee for the strongest future for our people.”

    Georgia has long had the highest average teacher pay in the South, but Abrams is proposing a $1.65 billion bump over four years. She would raise the typical starting salary to $50,000 from the current level just under $40,000 and increase average teacher pay to $75,000 from $60,553 this past school year, as tracked by the National Education Association.

    Abrams said that would boost Georgia, which currently ranks 21st in pay nationwide into the top 10.
