She’s a Grand Old Flag!!

Tomorrow, June 14th, is Flag Day, so I thought we could all use a refresher on flag etiquette. I am bringing this info from military.com, an article dated June 11, 2020:

The U.S. Flag Code formalizes and unifies the traditional ways in which we give respect to the flag, also contains specific instructions on how the flag is not to be used.

The following is a list of do’s and don’ts associated with Old Glory, the U.S. Flag.

When displaying the flag, DO the following:

  • Display the U.S. flag from sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs in the open. When a patriotic effect is desired the flag may be displayed 24-hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.
  • When placed on a single staff or lanyard, place the U.S. Flag above all other flags.
  • When flags are displayed in a row, the U.S. flag goes to the observer’s left. Flags of other nations are flown at same height. State and local flags are traditionally flown lower.
  • When used during a marching ceremony or parade with other flags, the U.S. Flag will be to the observer’s left.
  • On special days, the flag may be flown at half-staff. On Memorial Day it is flown at half-staff until noon and then raised.
  • When flown at half-staff, should be first hoisted to the peak for an instant and then lowered to the half-staff position. The flag should be again raised to the peak before it is lowered for the day. By “half-staff” is meant lowering the flag to one-half the distance between the top and bottom of the staff.
  • When the flag is displayed over the middle of the street, it should be suspended vertically with the union (blue field of stars) to the north in an east and west street or to the east in a north and south street.
  • When placed on a podium the flag should be placed on the speaker’s right or the staging area. Other flags should be placed to the left.
  • When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall (or other flat surface), the union (blue field of stars) should be uppermost and to the flag’s own right, that is, to the observer’s left.
  • When displayed in a window it should be displayed in the same way — with the union or blue field to the left of the observer in the street.
  • When the flag is displayed on a car, the staff shall be fixed firmly to the chassis or clamped to the right fender.
  • When the flag is used to cover a casket, it should be so placed that the union is at the head and over the left shoulder. The flag should not be lowered into the grave or allowed to touch the ground.

When saluting the flag DO the following:

  • All persons present in uniform (military, police, fire, etc.) should render the military salute. Members of the armed forces and veterans who are present but not in uniform may render the military salute.
  • All other persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, or if applicable, remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.

When stowing or disposing of the flag, DO the following:

  • Fold in the traditional triangle for stowage, never wadded up.
  • The flag should be folded in its customary manner.
  • It is important that the fire be fairly large and of sufficient intensity to ensure complete burning of the flag.
  • Place the flag on the fire.
  • The individual(s) can come to attention, salute the flag, recite the Pledge of Allegiance and have a brief period of silent reflection.
  • After the flag is completely consumed, the fire should then be safely extinguished and the ashes buried.
  • Please make sure you are conforming to local/state fire codes or ordinances.

Quick list of Flag Etiquette Don’ts:

  • Don’t dip the U.S. Flag for any person, flag, or vessel.
  • Don’t let the flag touch the ground.
  • Don’t fly flag upside down unless there is an emergency.
  • Don’t carry the flag flat, or carry things in it.
  • Don’t use the flag as clothing.
  • Don’t store the flag where it can get dirty.
  • Don’t use it as a cover.
  • Don’t fasten it or tie it back. Always allow it to fall free.
  • Don’t draw on, or otherwise mark the flag.
  • Don’t use the flag for decoration. Use bunting with the blue on top, then white, then red.

  1. Cotton threatens garland with impeachment should he continue to refuse to enforce federal law prohibitting protesting outside a justice’s residence. he’s calling on him to resign or face impeachment.
    FTA
“The relevant federal statute prohibits pickets and parades in front of a judge’s home, including for the purpose of influencing a judge,” Judicial Crisis Network executive director Carrie Severino told Fox News Digital. “I would love to know why Merrick Garland is refusing to enforce this law as protesters continue to gather at the justices’ private residences – especially after the apparent attempted assassination of Justice Kavanaugh.”

The DOJ’s response to the protests at justices’ homes has drawn attention on Capitol Hill as well.

Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., blasted Garland as “a partisan hack who should resign in disgrace for dereliction of duty.”
Sen. Tom Cotton questions Attorney General Merrick Garland during a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Capitol Hill, Oct. 27, 2021.

“A Democratic hitman tried to murder Justice Kavanaugh and his family. On the same day, left-wing street militias announced publicly they would picket his residence and the homes of other conservative justices,” Cotton told Fox News Digital. “This act of intimidation is a clear violation of federal law and Merrick Garland has done nothing.”

“His primary job is to enforce the law, and he has failed totally,” the Republican senator continued. “If he won’t resign, then we’ll impeach him once Republicans control the Congress in January. Either way, he is finished.”

    ‘scuse the rant

How did we get here – a primer for those who seem mystified by today’s ‘transgender’ escapades…

A look at the past (just a few of my memories)
‘Uncle Miltie’ – appearing on early TV in women’ clothing – ‘comic’ skits from the 50’s
Flip Wilson (another popular comic) depicting ‘Geraldine’
A movie I loved – Victor / Victoria. Well, I love Julie Andrews, James Garner and Robert Preston with some Alex Karras thrown in. I loved the music, but what was the theme?

Oh, then there were the books on ‘how to raise your kids’, encouraging you to all be sans clothes in your own home. How many visited or frequented ‘nudist colonies’?

I know, – history is replete with more examples – an attempt to ‘normalize’ what isn’t normal at all – or is it?

Judging by the popularity – you seem surprised that ‘men wanting to be women’ is dominating our news with ‘drag queens’ ‘educating our children. ‘Cmon – its a little late to be shocked, don’t ‘cha think?

This is not new. Are we really oblivious to 70 some years of programming?

  3. Jenna Ellis joins Mastriano’s campagin team
    FTA
“The talent, experience, and legal expertise Jenna brings will be an important factor in helping us defeat Josh Shapiro and the extreme Democrat agenda in November,” he added.

Shapiro, Pennsylvania’s attorney general, is the Democratic nominee for governor.

In Monday’s announcement, Ellis also called the race “the most important in the country,” adding that “Mastriano will reinstate personal and economic freedom in Pennsylvania, and he’ll restore integrity to our elections.”

Ellis is among Trump’s former attorneys who were subpoenaed by the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack, after she publicly promoted assertions that the 2020 election was stolen.

She reportedly “prepared and circulated two memos purporting to analyze the constitutional authority for the Vice President to reject or delay counting electoral votes from states that had submitted alternate slates of electors,” the committee said when they issued her subpoena.

Ellis was also part of an “elite strike force team” created by Trump’s campaign in November 2020 in an effort to combat Biden’s victory.

  4. CS Lewis!

Everyone who accepts the teaching of St Paul must have a belief in “sanctification”. But I should myself be very chary of describing such operations of the Holy Ghost as “experiences” if by experiences we mean things necessarily discoverable by introspection. And I should be still more chary of mapping out a series of such experiences as an indispensable norm (or syllabus!) for all Christians. I think the ways in which God saves us are probably infinitely various and admit varying degrees of consciousness in the patient. Anything which sets him saying, “Now – Stage II ought soon to be coming along – Is this it?” I think bad and likely to lead some to presumption and others to despair. We must leave God to dress the wound and not keep on taking peeps under the bandage for ourselves.

  5. Biblical insights through some different translations…

    Galatians 5:13

    New International Version

    Life by the Spirit
You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.

    King James Version

For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.

    New Living Translation

For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.

    Expanded Bible

My brothers and sisters, God called you to ·be free [L freedom], but do not use your freedom as an ·excuse to do what pleases [opportunity/occasion for] your ·sinful self [sinful nature; flesh]. [L But; Rather] Serve each other with love.

    New American Standard Bible

For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters; only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but serve one another through love.

  6. Under renovation, per CS Lewis

I find I must borrow yet another parable from George MacDonald. Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on: you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently he starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of—throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were going to be made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.

The command Be ye perfect is not idealistic gas. Nor is it a command to do the impossible. He is going to make us into creatures that can obey that command. He said (in the Bible) that we were ‘gods’ and He is going to make good His words. If we let Him—for we can prevent Him, if we choose—He will make the feeblest and filthiest of us into a god or goddess, a dazzling, radiant, immortal creature, pulsating all through with such energy and joy and wisdom and love as we cannot now imagine, a bright stainless mirror which reflects back to God perfectly (though, of course, on a smaller scale) His own boundless power and delight and goodness. The process will be long and in parts very painful, but that is what we are in for. Nothing less. He meant what He said.

  7. CS Lewis on prayer, from a BibleGateway.com mailing list:

I’ve just found in an old note-book a poem, with no author’s name attached, which is rather relevant to something we were talking about a few weeks ago—I mean, the haunting fear that there is no one listening, and that what we call prayer is soliloquy: someone talking to himself. This writer takes the bull by the horns and says in effect: ‘Very well, suppose it is’, and gets a surprising result. Here is the poem:

They tell me, Lord, that when I seem

To be in speech with you,

Since but one voice is heard, it’s all a dream,

    One talker aping two.

Sometimes it is, yet not as they

    Conceive it. Rather, I

Seek in myself the things I hoped to say,

But lo!, my wells are dry.

Then, seeing me empty, you forsake

    The listener’s role and through

My dumb lips breathe and into utterance wake

    The thoughts I never knew

And thus you neither need reply

Nor can; thus, while we seem

Two talkers, though are One forever, and I

    No dreamer, but thy dream.

Dream makes it too like Pantheism and was perhaps dragged in for the rhyme. But is he not right in thinking that prayer in its most perfect state is soliloquy?

  8. What’s been happening lately…

Hubby & I are currently “hanging” at the library, working on job search stuff on adjacent computers, which are way faster than what’s at home. I just set him up an Excel Sheet w/ parameters to process the voluminous info on the numerous job options & offers–yikes!

We had a busy weekend with a celebratory gathering for my husband’s trucking school completion, son Brandon’s fire academy graduation, & son-in-law Marshall’s teaching degree from U of M Dearborn. Marshall & Clarissa met at U of M-D’s InterVarsity Christian Fellowship & that group was also instrumental in B’s life even though he attended EMU. Our oldest & youngest kids attended U of M-D, but neither graduated. 😉

We’ve been pretty sore & tired for a couple days now. Getting older is no picnic!

We’ve got that first grandbaby coming in the next couple weeks. Our longtime neighbor (we moved into the neighborhood about 2 1/2 decades ago & he & Michael were in their first ever Christian Rock band together–those were the days!) is moving to the country in retirement so we get new neighbors for the first time in that house.

Son Josiah’s bachelor party is this coming weekend at my parents’ Cottage in Northern Michigan. Even the father-to-be, Nathaniel, & some of his buddies are planning to go. It’s interesting & busy times chez moi.

God has blessed us a couple times with some unexpected monetary gifts, which are helping to keep the bills paid. We are trusting Him to continue to provide for us (& our family’s needs) as these times of transition are quickly approaching & unfolding.

Hubby has gotten his CDL-A, haz-mat, & tanker endorsement. He’s trying to avoid a position requiring travel into Canada & having to deal w/ clot shot crap! He’s hopeful to find a fuel transport job (there are many in the local area) but it’s possible he’ll need 6-12 months of just driving experience first.

Please pray for God’s guidance & provision of the right job at the right time (NOW) & for stamina & favor in the process.

Michael has been pouring himself out in ministry to others recently & sometimes fights feelings of exhaustion & discouragement. It’s still a bit of a long slog…

Thanks for your ongoing prayers & encouragement. God Bless YOU ALL!!! ❤

      1. Yes me too! He’s got his resume out on a couple of job searching sites & he’s getting hits from recruiters for trucking & other things on his resume. We definitely need God’s wisdom & favor to make the best decision 🙂

        1. I might have told you this before…sorry if i did–my son’s best friend throughout gradeschool, high school–his best man at his wedding–didn’t go to college. instead he went to trucking school, worked all the crazy routes and shifts in the beginning (no girlfriend) and now he owns his own truck. he decides which hauls to take and when he wants to be home –he’s married now–so no weekends, no overnights and he has opportunities coming out his ears!
I think you and your hubby made a good decision!! and you’ll sort it out!

          1. Thanks for this encouragement & testimonial about your son’s friend. It’s a bit of a strange season for us & so late in his career. He Really hates waiting so this time has been especially trying. In the end I think we’ll come out much further ahead than if he’d just stayed at his old job 🙂 …but in the mean time… ❤

  9. EXCERPT: “Editor’s Note: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s vaccine advisory council will meet June 14 to consider granting Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) of the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines for children under 5 years old, even though the White House last week announced it is already filling orders for the vaccines placed by states and healthcare providers. Click here to tell your members of Congress to oppose EUA of these vaccines for young children.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last week released its risk-benefit assessment of Moderna’s Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) application to inject mRNA into kids 0 to 17 years old. I’ve been reading it for the past two days and here are the things that stood out to me.

Introduction, a shell game to hide the bad data

The risk-benefit document for Moderna is 190 pages single-spaced. It was released two business days before the June 14-15 Vaccines and Related Biological Products Advisory Committee, or VRBAC meeting. A similar risk-benefit assessment for Pfizer’s EUA application for kids under 5 will be released today (just 24 hours before the meeting). This guarantees that NONE of the members of the VRBPAC will have read either of these documents before the meeting — which is exactly what the cartel wants.

One of the ways Moderna and the FDA rig the game is by adding endless layers of complexity to hide how bad the data really is. This should have been four separate documents — Moderna in adolescents 12 to 17, Moderna in kids 6 to 11, Moderna in kids 2 to 5, and Moderna in kids 6 months to 23 months. Looked at individually, the shot fails in each of these four age groups. But lumping them together creates noise that makes it difficult to understand what’s going on.

Another really pernicious thing that Moderna does is to further subdivide these populations into eight different subpopulations (Randomization Set, Full Analysis Set, Immunogenicity Subset, Per-protocol Immunogenicity Subset, Per-protocol Set for Efficacy, Modified Intent-to-treat Set, MITT1 Set, Safety Set, Solicited Safety Set).

See what they did there? The public just wants to know — does the product work and what are the side effects?

By dividing the data into eight subcategories involving four different age groups now you have to wade through 32 different tables to try to make sense of what happened in the clinical trial.”

  10. EXCERPT: “As ordinary workers across the United States watched inflation eat away at modest wage gains in 2021, many corporations — including firms contracting with the federal government — used record-shattering profits to lavish their CEOs with bigger pay packages and reward shareholders with billions of dollars in stock buybacks.

According to an analysis published on June 7, by the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), the average gap between CEO and median worker pay at a sample of 300 low-wage U.S. corporations surged in 2021, rising to 670 to 1 — up from 604 to 1 in 2020.

Forty-nine of the publicly traded companies examined in the IPS study, titled “Executive Excess,” had CEO-to-worker-pay ratios above 1,000 to 1 last year. Amazon, for instance, paid CEO Andy Jassy a staggering 6,474 times more than it paid its median worker in 2021, a year in which the e-commerce giant spent $4.3 million on anti-union consultants.

Overall, IPS found that CEO pay at the 300 corporations increased by $2.5 million to an average of $10.6 million last year while median worker pay grew by just $3,556, rising to an average of $23,968 as inflation soared to its highest level in decades. IPS noted that skyrocketing inflation — which has been fueled by corporate profiteering — resulted in effective pay cuts for median workers at 106 of the companies in its sample.

Meanwhile, IPS observed, 67% of those firms spent a total of $43.7 billion on stock buybacks, which benefit company shareholders and help boost the stock-based compensation of executives.”
