My Father’s Bible

My father, a good and loving man, passed away 8 years ago. It was a miserable week in early March, so services, even limited ones for the immediate family, couldn’t be held. Instead his cremation urn was installed in the mausoleum space without fanfare, with the expectation of a small service in a month or two as weather permitted. Those services never happened. Instead my mother, a woman I love dearly, and I had an obnoxious fight. We hadn’t spoken to one another again until last summer at my future daughter-in-law’s wedding shower.

In those 8 years, a lot had happened but we quickly caught up with each other’s lives. Our apologies were as quick as they were brief, without a glance backward as to why they were necessary in the first place. Forgive, forget, move on.

My mother was one of 15 children and growing up in that environment instilled in her a need to save everything–someone might be able to use it! was her motto. Her tiny cape cod home was bursting at the seams with things she was holding onto–some things still new in their boxes. When she began to use a walker, all those extra things in her rooms were becoming trip hazards and she asked my help in sorting out and clearing out the mess.

The mess comprises 3 floors! The basement, my father’s workshop, is off limits to me. My mother insists that all the tools (woodworking tools) belong to my younger brother–a man who has never shown any interest in wood working at all. (Unlike me, who with the help of my father, built a dry sink 40 years ago and i still have it!) But I digress. Mom cannot travel up or down stairs anymore, so she doesn’t know that the tools have rusted and because my brother never used them in 8 years are practically worthless at this point. Sigh

We spent the weekend, opening boxes and plastic bins filled with all sorts of bizarre gadgets and “As Seen on TV” items…LOL. Laughing at the absurdity of each item, we determined who might best make use of it and made piles–some for grandchildren, some for her sisters.

After I helped her clean out drawers and cabinets in the spare room, I labeled the piles and called everyone on her list of recipients–come claim your items within a week or they would be in the trash!

Since we were making some real progress, we treated ourselves to a break. We sat at the table to rest and regroup when my mom pulled a box out from under the table where she sat. “Here,” she said, “I want you to have this.” I opened the box to find my father’s Bible, the one he carried with him to school when he was young, the one he had his whole life. I swallowed hard and asked if she didn’t want to keep it…but she said she knew how much it meant to me.

The tears streamed down my face as mom and I talked about my dad’s last days. What she faced alone with him, beside him to the end. I don’t know how she endured. She told me she couldn’t go through his wallet for 2 years after he passed, but now she felt she could start to pass his things along and she especially wanted me to have this.

It’s old and weathered but holding it made me feel so close to my father again. I promised my mother my husband and I will visit again next month to help sort out and clean another room and she’s happy about that. She reminded me she has 2 more rooms on the main floor–then we have to clean the upstairs and the attic! There’s undoubtedly more of my father’s things to be found and dispersed, but my father’s Bible will remain with me until I pass it to my son.

  1. Morning All!
How did you make out last evening Filly?
    any more storms???
When I came downstairs this morning there was an oriole sitting on our railing singing. I put in laundry and sat down to open my laptop. I could see the bird on the railing and he could see me. He flew to the hummer feeder and that made me get up and fill the jelly in the little feeder we rigged up.
He sat on the far edge of the railing scolding as i tied it there and as soon as i closed the door, he was on it…guess he was hungry…LOL

    1. Oh, I do love those Orioles, being the fighter I am! Such gutsy birds! I hear that scolding all day long and you should see the fights over the jelly feeder! I counted at least 5 at one time yesterday. You bet they are hungry – they’ve just finished their migration and need to replenish. LOL

No, no more storms – within a half hour, the skies were clear, sun shining brightly and temp climbing again. By the time I went to bed around 11 or so, it was still 84. We are already up to 77 now and predicted to get into the 90’s – that is when we get the bad storms. So, I’ve battened down the hatches, so to speak, and am crossing my fingers! At least they are expected to move thru quickly. Then we have a cold front coming thru for highs in the 70’s next week.

  3. reading a story about the handmaids protesting at the justices’ homes…here is an excellent suggestion from the peanut gallery

Follow them home and hang out in front of their home yelling and screaming all night long. Park a trailer with photos of MURDERED (aborted) babies in front of their homes so they can see what they want to do. Remind them that if their Mother had aborted them they would not be there to protest.

    1. That is one thing I cannot condone no matter what, going to people’s homes – think about their children. What’s ‘good for the goose is good for the gander’ doesn’t apply when principles come into play and it is just flat-out wrong to invade that personal space, no matter who it is!

sometimes the only way they learn is to reap what they sow.
this is why, when we take back congress…it’s GOT to be take no prisoners!
if we play the “we’re above that kind of thing” again, we will LOSE again.

        1. As long as the actions are based on strong principles – I am NOT talking about the RINO’s BS “we have to maintain comity.” When they say “we’re above that kind of thing,” they are talking about silliness like Trump’s blunt speech, just like JD Vance about that guy he was debating – it was the manner of speech that he didn’t like – tough shit – the truth is the truth! That is not at all what I’m talking about! But when it comes to actual physical actions? Two wrongs never equal one right – I truly believe that. Like someone robbing a store: “well, they did it first” does NOT cut it! Like Laura making fun of the fat man who worked at the blind school – they did it first doesn’t cut it! One either lives by principles and honor, or one doesn’t – it’s a choice we all have to make.

  4. Oh, my! I am sooo happy for you, Pat, that you have his Bible! I can identify with saving everything – I do that, too! “I might be able to use that some time.” My garage is cluttered with a lot of that junk. But, then again, I make use of a lot of it, i.e., my rigged jelly feeder using the base of the old Oriole feeder and the other seed feeder that was my Mom’s. I find it kind of ironic, all those “As Seen On TV” things – perhaps, given her childhood, she did it simply because she finally could.

I did a LOT of that after I got my inheritance – I spent almost my entire adult life scrimping and scrabbling for $$$. I spent literally thousands on the trip to VA to p/u David, and the trip to SD, followed by the trip to OK and TX. But we had a grand time and it did soooo much good for David, while also being kind of sad because he was “in love” with me, whereas I loved him like a brother. But, in the end, it brought it home to him that he was fooling himself that we could ever have that kind of relationship. He was, at least, able to move on and focus on his future. I truly hope things worked out for him – he was a good and true friend.

I also gave away thousands of $$$’s to HB and other family members. I gave my sister the $3K to pay up her unpaid property tax (she thought the mortgage company was paying it) and when she wanted to pay it back, I told her to use it for new windows – she needed them badly. Paid close to $7K for a vehicle for my Mom; $3K to my brother in WI, etc., etc. I felt guilty because I hadn’t earned that money even tho I deserved it, in a way, for the hell they put me thru.

No-one is perfect – we deal with the hand we are dealt and just do the best we can. One can expect no more than that, IMO.

My Dad passed away 8 years ago too…in April, Easter morning that year. I did not go to the funeral because I was in bad shape and feuding with relatives. Had a private viewing the morning of. Dad didn’t have a Bible, but I did get his belt buckle. We are both steamfitters by trade, (HVAC), and he had a buckle made of different sized pipe welded togather. It was something guys who worked on nuke plant jobs would have. It’s now on my everyday belt.

  6. hmmmm…so schmucky was lying…it wasn’t just codifying abortion into federal law–it was indeed expanding it. he had a chance to codify it, he refused to bring THAT to the floor…

    FTA
Although top Democrats framed the legislation as affirming the legal regime established in Roe v. Wade, the Women’s Health Protection Act eliminates several regulations that federal courts have upheld. The bill would end bans on partial-birth abortions and eliminate requirements that women be presented with ultrasounds before they undergo an abortion. It would also likely allow sex-selective abortions, which eleven states currently ban, according to the pro-legal abortion Guttmacher Institute.

Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, both of whom support Roe v. Wade, announced that they would not support the Democratic legislation, citing those provisions. They introduced an alternative amendment in February that would maintain conscience protections while legalizing abortion at the federal level, but Schumer has repeatedly refused to support “compromise” legislation on the issue.

  7. he signed this into law means congress PASSED this crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    FTA
Biden recently signed into law a requirement that all vehicles produced after 2026 be fitted with a remote kill switch. Electric vehicles are already equipped with this capability via internet-connected “superchargers.” These corporations can sell you a product for tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars, then prevent you from using them. Worse yet, if the law is not challenged or repealed, these kill switches will have a “back door” that allows government agencies to shut your vehicle off remotely as well.

No comment on the fact that McCormick spent 10 years in the service and was never promoted above Butter Ball. I went thru basic and AIT with another gal from NE – we both received accelerated promotion in basic and AIT; we both finished the admin school in 3 days, we were both selected for special assignment to the MDW; we were both assigned to the SDRP, both received perfect annual performance reviews, both promoted to E-4, both received ARCOMS. Our records were identical, yet when the time came for promotion to E-5, she had taken one college course, while I had not – she got promoted, I did not. And that college course could have been elementary basket weaving – didn’t matter. It is not as clear-cut as they make it out to be.

  8. EXCERPT: “His Fraudulency Joe Biden marked the one-millionth American death from the China Flu on Thursday without apologizing for his devastating mishandling of the pandemic.

When Biden was sworn in as president on January 20, 2021, roughly 400,000 Americans had already died from the coronavirus. Since Joe Biden took office, roughly 600,000 more have died. Why is this notable?

Because when Biden took office, he was handed The Trump Vaccine, he was handed a miracle vaccine (the miracle being how quickly it was created). The vaccine might not have prevented the spread of the virus or protected you from catching it. Still, as far as reducing the effects of the virus and, by extension, greatly reducing your chances of landing in the hospital or dying, the vaccine was and is extremely effective.

So Biden had the vaccine, and more people died on his watch. It gets worse. On July 4, 2021, Biden declared victory against the coronavirus.”

  9. EXCERPT: “A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit challenging Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R-FL) law to dissolve Disney’s special governing and tax district. Three residents of Orange and Osceola counties claimed S.B. 4-C, the law that eliminates Disneys’ special tax district, threatens with higher taxes, limits free speech, and violates a contractual obligation. William Sanchez, a Miami lawyer and Senate Democrat candidate, filed the suit last week.

U.S. District Court Judge Cecilia Altonaga ruled there were many reasons to dismiss the lawsuit, including the lack of standing over state issues. Anltonaga wrote that the residents “do not plausibly allege they have suffered any concrete injury as a result of the alleged violation of Disney’s First Amendment rights, and nothing in the Complaint shows Plaintiffs have a close relationship with Disney.”

The judge also dismissed claims that dissolving the Disney corporate carveout, otherwise known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District, would limit free speech:

‘Far from it: Plaintiffs expressly allege that they “expect Disney and the State of Florida to litigate this matter for a significant period of time[.]” That fact alone warrants dismissal. See, e.g., Harris, 20 F.3d at 1124–25 (holding that case must be dismissed for lack of jurisdiction because plaintiff failed to show that non-parties whose First Amendment rights were allegedly violated faced hindrance in asserting their rights).

Another notable exception to the general principle that a party may not sue for violations of others’ constitutional rights applies in the First Amendment context. But that exception relaxes traditional standing requirements only when a litigant asserts a claim of First Amendment overbreadth. Plaintiffs assert no such claim here. They instead allege what is in essence a First Amendment retaliation claim on Disney’s behalf. And First Amendment retaliation claims do not qualify for watered-down third-party standing standards.'”

  10. EXCERPT: “A federal jury found a Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party campaign volunteer guilty of lying to a grand jury amid a voter fraud probe, claiming he submitted absentee ballots at the request of three individuals who, according to prosecutors, did not give him ballots to submit.

On Tuesday, the jury, comprised of ten women and two men, convicted Muse Mohamud Mohamed of two counts of making false statements to a grand jury, some 40 minutes after deliberations began, Minnesota Public Radio reports.

    According to the outlet:

‘Prosecutors said that Mohamed, who worked on DFL State Sen. Omar Fateh’s primary campaign, sent absentee ballots to the Minneapolis elections office on behalf of three people. In September and October, Mohamed told a grand jury investigating election fraud that the three filled out the ballots themselves, even though evidence presented at trial showed that they had not.

When prosecutors on Monday showed witness Abdiriman Muse, 22, an absentee ballot form purported to be his, Muse testified that his name was misspelled, his address was wrong, and he did not vote in the 2020 primary.

The state of Minnesota allows for absentee ballot voters, who were unable to vote in person due to illness or disability, to submit their ballots to an “agent” who can act on the voter’s behalf, as the Associated Press notes:

Absentee voters in Minnesota can use “agent delivery.” It’s meant for voters who intend to vote in person, but become unable due to health reasons or disabilities. They can then request absentee ballots after the normal deadline and can designate an “agent” to act on their behalf. That agent must be at least 18, have a pre-existing relationship with the voter, and can’t be a candidate. A [sic] agent can pick up and deliver ballots for no more than three voters in any given election.

The prosecution’s filing asserted Mohamed did not have a relationship with the three voters, the Associated Press reported. Moreover, the three individuals did not request Mohamed deliver ballots on their behalf, according to the filing. “One ballot he allegedly attempted to return was rejected because the voter had voted in person,” the outlet says.”

  11. EXCERPT: “Amid growing concern that Garcetti lacked the votes to be confirmed, Senate oversight staff conducted an investigation. Garcetti refused to cooperate, as did a dozen other witnesses, including Jacobs himself. The report concluded:

‘Based on information obtained by Committee investigators, it is more probable than not that Mr. Jacobs sexually harassed multiple individuals, and made racist comments towards others. Based on witness testimony, this behavior was pervasive, widespread, and notorious. Several individuals told investigators that Mayor Garcetti was aware of this behavior, and based on the reported frequency and conspicuous nature of the conduct, it is more likely than not that Mayor Garcetti either had personal knowledge of the sexual harassment or should have been aware of it.’

The conclusion is all but certain to end Garcetti’s nomination, as well as future ambitions for higher office. The New York Times notes that Garcetti’s stumbles have left the Biden administration without an ambassador to India at a key moment.”

  12. I have no clue who this jitbag is – from the UK, apparently – but, personally, I have a problem with bringing rape charges this many years after the fact. However, I don’t know exactly WHEN they came forward. In either case, this man is disgusting! Then again, so are the lunatic women who throw themselves at these celebrities! IMO, the parents are at fault here as well. Trump was right about that – far too many will indeed, let you grab their you-know-what if they think it will get them somewhere.

EXCERPT: “Jacob Hoggard pleaded not guilty to two counts of sexual assault causing bodily harm and one of sexual interference after two women came forward to accuse him of rape dating back to 2016.

The rock star and frontman for the band Hedley is accused of violently forcing himself upon both women, one of whom was just 16-years-old at the time of the alleged incident, according to CBC. Prosecutors allege that each of these separate attacks left the victims bloodied and sore, with one of the victims alleging she was “crying and saying no” throughout the hours-long ordeal in a Toronto-area hotel room, the outlet reported.
    ———————
Crown attorney Kelly Slate revealed that one of the alleged victims, in this case, was just 15 years old and was a huge fan of Hoggard’s band, according to CBC. She reportedly attended his concert for her 13th birthday, and Hoggard is said to have exchanged numbers with her parents, then assisted them in securing backstage passes for other shows, the outlet reported.

The messages soon became “romantic and sexual” in nature, Slate Said, according to CBC. Hoggard “told her she was beautiful, that he loved her and that he saw a future with her,” prior to the alleged attack, according to Slate.
    ——————–
Defense lawyer Megan Savard alleges that the sex between Hoggard and the complainants was consensual, according to CP24 News. Hoggard’s legal team has fired back in response to the testimony of both alleged victims, suggesting that one of the women was “embarrassed” about being used for sex by a rock star, and opted to create a rape story in an effort to evade issues with her boyfriend at the time, the outlet reported.”

EXCERPT: “A Virginia high school requested programming from the Department of Justice (DOJ) that reportedly separates students in “homogenous” groups and does not allow parents to attend, according to a parent familiar with the matter.

Fairfax High School is slated to host the DOJ’s School-Student Problem Identification and Resolution of Issues Together (SPIRIT) program on Monday, May 16, and Tuesday, May 17, according to a Fairfax County parent. The program is run by the Justice Department’s Community Relations Service (CRS), which is available to state and local officials “to help resolve and prevent racial and ethnic conflict, violence and civil disorder.”

Day one of the DOJ’s programming allegedly places students in “separate homogeneous breakout groups” wherein they “have uncomfortable conversations about tensions in the school,” according to an advocacy group that reported on the program at an Alaska high school. In an example listed on the DOJ’s website, student participants in Anchorage were divided into five groups to identify the school’s strengths and areas on concerns, including the alleged “widespread use” of racial and ethnic slurs.

On the second day of School-SPIRIT programming, students meet in “heterogeneous” breakout groups and brainstorm solutions to tensions in the school. The program then introduces the “SPIRIT Student Advisory Team,” which must meet with the school’s principal “at least on a monthly basis,” according to the report.”

She also claimed that the “general parent population” was not notified in written form about the programming.

The same mother insisted that the high school allow her to attend the Monday and Tuesday event. Acting Principal Maureen Keck told the mother that the program information was shared with students on Friday, May 6, and is optional. Keck said the program is “student centered” and not open to parents, according to email correspondence.”

2 months ago, my brother got her a cell phone (she has a land line and 2 portable phones, but he insisted she have this.) he never showed her how to use it, so hubby charged it and showed her the basics and I wrote down the instructions in clear easy language and we practiced using it.
she insisted her cell phone rang and my number came up (with my picture…thanks a lot hubby…lol)
but i never called her. i was sitting here sewing and reading on my laptop.
then her OTHER phone rang while we were talking and she thought it was her cell phone and was flummoxed what to do…I said it’s your OTHER phone…we’ll hang up…answer that one.
I think she opened her cell phone by mistake and saw that i called her (days ago when we were practicing) and since I’m the only one that called that number she thought i called that phone.

The nationwide shortage of baby formula that has sent mothers desperately rushing from store to store has evaded one lucky group: illegal immigrants detained by Border Patrol.

According to videos posted by a Florida lawmaker, the Biden administration has been shipping “pallets” of baby formula to migrant holding facilities.

“They are sending pallets, pallets of baby formula to the border,” said Republican Rep. Kat Cammack in one of two online postings yesterday. “Meanwhile, in our own district at home, we cannot find baby formula,” she added, holding a photo of empty shelves where the formula would be.
