MILITARY WEDDING TRADITIONS

If you thought other weddings you’ve been to had a lot of traditions, just wait until you attend your first military wedding. With a slew of unique customs, specific dress codes, and even requirements for invitation wording, there’s etiquette to navigate that you may not have seen before. Plus, different branches of the military have different variations of these traditions.

Like all nuptial ceremonies, military weddings are celebratory and meaningful events but with an added air of patriotism. They’re meant to honor anyone who has served or is currently serving in any branch of the U.S. military, including those enlisted, active and retired officers, and cadets at an academy. Incorporating long-standing traditions makes military weddings that much more special, and there’s a lot more guidance when it comes to making decisions about the venue, decorations, recessional song, and more.

Wondering what to expect at a military wedding? Below, learn all about the traditions, plus what to plan for and expect at a military wedding ceremony.

Seating Based on Military Status and Rank

During the ceremony, commanding officers should sit near the front, either with or directly behind the couple’s families. At the reception, military members should be seated by rank (captains with captains, sergeants with sergeants, etc.). Military personnel may also be seated together at a table of honor near the head table, or they can sit with the civilian guests if the couple prefers.

Each branch of service has specific seating guidelines, but overall, high-ranking officers (generals, captains) are given positions of the highest honor both at the ceremony and reception.

A Flag On Display

An American flag and the bride or groom’s unit standard are usually on display during the ceremony as a sign of respect. Protocol dictates that this should be displayed to the left of the officiant when viewed by the gathered guests. In addition to the flag, the couple may choose to incorporate other patriotic decorations and colors into their ceremony and reception.

The Rules of Grooming

If the groom chooses to be wed in full military uniform, they’ll need to adhere to the unique regulatory standards that each branch holds, including universal grooming standards, such as shaving. All men in uniform must be clean-shaven, and these same rules apply to any vets or retirees planning to don a uniform.

My friends, Marianne and Ski (his last name was Pankowsky but IDR his first name – we just called him Ski! The blue braid on his arm signifies that he was in the 3rd US Infantry)

If you’re a woman marrying a male retiree or vet with a sexy beard and want him to wear his uniform, he’s going to have to get rid of it again. I think we’re all aware that men can get pretty attached to their beards, so that may or may not require some negotiation. However, the opportunity to again wear a uniform that holds so much national and personal significance may be a major motivation.

Groomsmen in White Gloves

Any member of the wedding party in uniform who is carrying a saber or cutlass, whether an officer or enlisted personnel, must wear white gloves. This is typically required of military members for most ceremonial events. The groom and best man are exempt, however, as they will be handling the rings.

The Saber Arch Exit

If one or both of the newlyweds are commissioned officers, they may exit the ceremony beneath an archway of sabers held by other military members, known as the Arch of Sabers (or the Arch of Swords if they’re in the Navy or Marine Corps). If the partners are noncommissioned officers or enlisted personnel, they will instead use a variation known as the Arch of Rifles.

The arch serves as a pledge of loyalty to the couple by their military family and often ends with the final two military members lowering their sabers to prevent the couple from passing.

Traditionally, brides who aren’t in the military may be ceremonially tapped on the behind with a saber before the couple is allowed to pass—it’s considered a way to “welcome” them into the military family. Though less common than it used to be, it’s still practiced today, and brides can request to skip this part if they’re not comfortable with it.

Cake-Cutting With a Sword

The sword cake-cutting is perhaps one of the most recognizable military wedding traditions. If the bride or groom is an officer, they will use a ceremonial military sword to cut their wedding cake instead of a knife or cake server.

Marianne and Ski did cut their cake with a sword but I didn’t get pics of that one!

Traditionally, the military spouse presents the sword to their partner before they cut the cake. Then, customarily, the bride places a hand underneath the groom’s on the handle of the sword, and they cut through the cake together; however, this can be updated according to the couple’s preferences.

  2. Good morning y’all! Frosty this morning. Did not expect that until tomorrow morning, so I got up at 0130 to bring some houseplants in while it was still 35*. 31* now. Supposed to get up in the upper 60’s today, so I may do some garden work. Need to organize the garage/basement while it’s still cold outside.

    1. hubby was looking at the temps and contemplating stacking wood in the woodshed.
Unfortunately last fall he failed to remove a bird’s nest in the ribs of the metal structure and the birds have come back. (they are already crapping on his tractor parked in there he says)
we have a pact about nests him and I…if eggs can be seen in the nest, it must remain till the occupants are gone..but if no eggs, it can be removed.
birds, robins in particular, are drawn to the log corners of the house–but they make a tremendous mess on the logs that’s difficult to remove. One year we got the big ladder out and placed log pieces in the corners to frustrate their efforts. One robin managed to get behind the piece and was attempting to move it with his body. hubby had to put up a bigger log.

  3. I have pictures somewhere of my 2nd cousin Charles’ wedding. Before I was born, right after he got back from ‘Nam. He was in uniform. I think some of the others were as well, like my father. They had their Dress Blues on…Marines. My father was buried in his as well, belt had to be borrowed from one of his Legion buddies widow. After going through cancer, he had lost enough weight to fit in them again.I sent him off with a 7.62 round in his jacket pocket. I have a Springfield M1A, similar to the M14 he had in ‘Nam. He always wanted me to get him a M1A, but he passed before I could.

She lost all of the rest of her pics and literally hundreds of patterns she had collected thru the years, not to mention a shit-load of fabrics.

    1. EXCERPT: ““The Great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has a tremendous opportunity to Save America by electing the brilliant and well-known Dr. Mehmet Oz for the United States Senate,” Trump said. “I have known Dr. Oz for many years, as have many others, even if only through his very successful television show.”

Trump touted the “thousands of life-saving heart operations” Oz has performed throughout his medical career and the eight New York Times bestsellers he authored. Trump also pointed to Oz’s pro-life views and his strengths on the border, election fraud, and the military as reasons for his endorsement. Trump said:

‘Dr. Oz is Pro-Life, very strong on Crime, the Border, Election Fraud, our Great Military, and our Vets, Tax Cuts, and will always fight for and support our under-siege Second Amendment. He will ensure America will become Energy Independent again. Dr. Oz also passionately believes in high-quality education and protecting parent involvement throughout the process.’

Trump believes that Oz would be the most electable candidate to defeat the Democrat challenger in the November midterm elections.”

  6. Good for AL!!!!

Entire article @ BB: “During Thursday’s White House press briefing, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki threatened Alabama legislators behind a recently passed bill prohibiting transgender conversion therapy for minors under 19.

Alabama lawmakers passed the bill deemed the Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act (SB184) by a 66-28 vote. Governor Kay Ivey (R-AL) signed the bill into law on Friday. However, before the Governor’s signature, Psaki singled out Alabama lawmakers by declaring they had been “put on notice” by the Department of Justice and the Department of Health and Human Services. She also pledged that President Joe Biden would hold them accountable.

Two of the lawmakers that led the way on this and other legislation passed to protect children responded to Psaki in statements given to Breitbart News. Alabama State Rep. Wes Allen (R), a candidate for Alabama’s open Secretary of State office this election cycle, dismissed Psaki’s remarks.

“I have gotten calls today about the fact that Jen Psaki criticized my passage of the Vulnerable Child Protection Act in the Alabama legislature yesterday,” Allen said in a statement. “First and foremost, I was elected to represent my district, and Psaki has not been elected by anyone to represent anyone and secondly, I could not care less what Psaki and the Biden Administration think about me.”

The Alabama Legislature also passed legislation that required public school students use the bathroom assigned to the gender listed on their birth certificate. In addition to that provision, an amendment was added to that bill by Alabama State Sen. Shay Shelnutt (R) that mimics Florida’s Parental Rights in Education law.

The House sponsor of that bill, Alabama State Rep. Scott Stadthagen (R), also rejected the White House’s rhetoric and advised the Biden administration to “stay in their lane.”

“The Tenth Amendment is clear on the role of the federal government as opposed to the state government,” Stadthagen said to Breitbart News. “The federal government has no constitutionally defined role in this matter, so the Biden administration should stay in their lane and fix the messes they have caused at our border instead of focusing on legitimately passed bills in Alabama.”

        1. I saw an interesting take on Abbotts’s strategy–shipping busloads to dc. it’s supposedly a fake out–get the feds concentrating on that while he instead slowed down traffic on one of the busiest crossings from mexico for hours–drones flying overhead–inspecting every vehicle. (apparently vehicle inspection of EACH vehicle was 45 minutes)…hoping to force mexico to police their side more vigorously …dunno

  7. EXCERPT: “One of the best examples I know of a story about the importance of character is one involving our 40th president, Ronald Wilson Reagan. It is a compelling and inspiring story.

In the midst of the 1976 Republican presidential primary campaign, Reagan was preparing to make a campaign speech in the parking lot of a shopping mall in North Carolina. Just before the speech was about to begin, a woman approached Reagan’s assistant press secretary, Dana Rohrabacher, and asked him if it would be possible for Governor Reagan to spend a few minutes with a group of blind children she had escorted to the event. Rohrabacher conveyed the request to Mike Deaver, Reagan’s campaign chief of staff.

Reagan overheard the exchange between his two staff members and agreed to meet the children, but only if the press contingent was not present when the meeting took place. Reagan did not want to be accused of staging a potentially poignant event for political gain, but he really wanted to meet the children. Rohrabacher said later, “Can you imagine that? He was in the middle of a presidential campaign, and the press would have gone wild for a photo of him with a group of blind kids. But Reagan wanted this to be between him and the kids.”

Deaver concocted a plan in which he would escort Reagan in the direction of the campaign bus after the speech concluded. This action, it was hoped, would lead the press corps to believe that the candidate was leaving for the next campaign stop and thus get them to board their vehicles and depart. Reagan would then circle back and meet the children in the privacy of the area behind the podium. The plan worked.

Rohrabacher described what happened next. “The press guys all went back to their buses, and I brought the lady with the blind kids back behind the podium. There were six or seven kids, real sweet little kids about eight or nine or ten years old. Since there was a lot of background noise — Reagan bent down, close to the kids, to talk to them. But somehow I could see him thinking that that wasn’t enough. So after the kids had asked him a couple of questions, he said, ‘Well, now I have a question for you. Would you like to touch my face so you can get a better understanding of how I look?’ The kids all smiled and said yes, so Reagan just leaned over into them, and one by one these little kids began moving their fingers over his face to see what he looked like.

“The only picture of that scene is the picture in my mind,” Rohrabacher said. “But I can still see those kids, touching Ronald Reagan’s face and smiling these really big smiles.”

  8. EXCERPT: “Whoever has noticed this lack of regard for people, even in top ranks of government, has been looking at the same face of evil that was once condemned by the Vatican and by pastors in churches where “soldiers of Christ” assembled.

Moving in step with politicos and celebs who are quick to name the “good guys” and the “bad guys” in our country is not being a smart American. Many of our finger-pointing leaders ought to be facing the mirror and examining their conscience as never before, if indeed they ever have. It might clear their minds and help them consider rejoining the humanity they are obviously out of step with. It might also stay the impulse to engage in kinetic war, not of defense, but offense –which history has proved costly, senseless, destructive and deadly.

Encouraging and promoting major conflict, regardless of human cost, denies our spiritual heritage and in no sense is being a “good guy.” They in high office who deserve that distinction — the courageous and conscientious in government who respect laws higher than any made in Congress — are treated like the “bad guys” and kept away from decisive action.

In the final analysis, it matters not whether one views what is unfolding in the world as “the end times,” the last battle between good and evil, or any other apocalyptic culmination of world history, over which it is generally assumed that mere human beings can have no impact. Such suicidal fatalism has no place in any theology or philosophy. What does matter is choosing to line up against wanton destruction of human life for whatever cause and facing down zealots who would deny people their lives and livelihoods for a so-called better world.

How far we’ve drifted from “In God We Trust,” the official motto of the United States, and acceptance of the ultimate shield against leaders who turn their backs on God and wage war on humanity! Can they not see that in so doing they have inadvertently started a war against themselves?

In the past, spiritual warfare was fought in churches and articulated in verse and musical refrain inspired by the Giver of Life. Today it is dramatically visible throughout the world in the great swell of human protest against tyranny that is turning heads and waking everyone up.”

  9. EXCERPT: “Accepting the fake claims of a massacre is as bad as or even worse than denying a real one. Besides the immediate damage caused by the deception, it undermines trust and empathy when a real massacre happens. The allegations of the Bucha massacre are false.

The Russian military left Bucha, Ukraine on March 30, 2022. On March 31, Bucha mayor Anatoly Fedoruk triumphantly declared Bucha liberated. On April 1, a video shot from a moving car appeared on Twitter, showing 7 (maybe 8) dead bodies on the Yablonska Street in Bucha. By April 3, the number of bodies found on the streets of Bucha had grown to 20, and mass graves were shown. Kyiv claimed that the Russian military had executed between 280 and 410 civilians in Bucha. Russia denied these accusations (RIA FAN in Russian, April 7) and demanded a special session by the U.N. Security Council to refute them. This request was blocked by Britain.

Mass Graves: The mass graves are real, but the decision to bury the deceased in a mass grave was made by the local authorities in consultations with clergy after the morgue was overflowing. Deceased people, including those who had died from natural causes and shooting by both sides, were buried there.

Burying the dead in mass graves in Bucha was known since March 10, at least. It was discussed in Russian-speaking forums with videos. Satellite imagery of the dug grave (CNN, April 3) from March 10 matches the description by the local abbot (CNN, April 5):

The local morgue in Bucha ran out of space as deaths mounted in March; to deal with all the bodies, a tractor was brought in to dig a mass grave in the grounds of the Church of St. Andrew. … There were too many dead people, and there was no way to properly bury them because getting to the cemetery was simply unrealistic because of the shelling.

Bucha was under Russian control at that time, so shelling was likely not by them. Until April 2–3, nobody claimed that victims of executions had been buried there. This practice of temporary burial in mass graves (“братские могилы,” literally “brotherly graves”) is being reported from other contested areas of Ukraine. It has nothing to do with alleged war crimes.

There is a huge cultural misunderstanding. In the West, mass graves are associated with mass murder. In Russia and Ukraine, they are associated with fighting a war. Even permanent burial in mass or brotherly graves is not unusual in times of war.

  10. LOL – too good not to post the whole thing! Clarice Feldman, AT:

“It has been unseasonably cold in Washington D.C. this spring. The blossoms on the cherry tree on my front lawn had barely bloomed when a cold snap and heavy wind-driven rain scattered the petals all over my front lawn. I stepped out front to pick up a box of herbs left there to be planted when a neighbor passed by.

I don’t know him very well, but his virtue signaling was a rather good clue as to where his sympathies lay. His lawn was peppered with signs: ”Biden-Harris,” “Hate has no Home Here,” “Build Bridges not Walls,” “Refugees Welcome Here,” “Climate Action Now,” “Gun Control Now,” “Black Lives Matter,” “Defund the Police.” By their lawn signs you shall know them, I thought. Still, I was polite — waved and said, ”Hi.”

He apparently had something on his chest he just had to get rid of and approached me. “It’s Trump’s doing!” he shouted. Nonplussed, I simply raised my eyebrows and let him continue. “He only pretended to run against Biden. He wanted him to win!” “Really?” I asked.

“It’s perfectly obvious. Getting Biden and Harris elected was his diabolical way of destroying the Democratic party for decades! They and the Democratic party’s policies are so stupid, the people can’t stand them. Can’t wait to get rid of them.”

I didn’t wish to disturb this already vexed man more, so, saying nothing, I tilted my head suggesting I wanted to hear more behind his tirade.

“I can’t think of a thing Biden’s done which doesn’t make life worse for everyone. He’s losing Black and Hispanic voters and even suburban White women with this craziness. He’s paving the way for Iran to get nuclear weapons and upset the peace in the Middle East, to detriment of our allies. He’s stirring up Putin in a way that may lead to World War III. He’s thrown out so much money that inflation is soaring, and average people are finding it hard to put food on the tables and a roof over their heads.

“And don’t get me started on energy.” (I looked over at his yard — his “Climate Action Sign” was missing).

“He did everything to raise the cost of coal, gas, and oil and that has added to household costs for everything and created a supply chain bottleneck we can’t seem to work our way out of. We’re told the dog food we need will be out of stock for at least a month and it’ll be six months until we can replace our refrigerator.”

“I’m sorry to hear that,” I said.

“Crime,” he muttered. “It’s out of control. This defund the police stuff is ridiculous. Five cars were broken into on this block in the last two weeks. There was a multiple shooting in the motel where the government has been housing the homeless three blocks away the week before. I’ve never seen anything like that in this neighborhood before!” (I looked again over his shoulder. The “Gun Control Now” sign had also vanished from his lawn.)

“And then there are the absolutely moronic things he and Harris say. This week he said that if we buy electric vehicles, we’ll save about $80 a month on gas. But those cars on average cost $56,000, a great deal more than conventional cars, and electricity — largely produced by fossil fuels — costs more because he’s made it more expensive by hamstringing the production of gas, coal, and oil. So even if his calculation were true, it would take decades for someone to afford to purchase an electric vehicle to achieve such savings.

“Don’t get me started on Harris, she’s even dumber. I can’t even point to the dumbest thing she’s said — there’s so much competition — but what does she even mean with gibberish like this: ‘We have the ability to see what can be unburdened by what has been and then to make the possible actually happen’? Or this: ‘It is time for us to do what we have been doing and that time is every day’?

“And then this genius comes out with a $5.8 trillion budget plan which, no kidding, he said was a ‘clear message that we value fiscal responsibility.’ I mean, we’re already $30 trillion dollars in debt and he wants to spend stuff like this — $11 billion for ‘international climate finance,’ and $18 billion for a ‘Civilian Climate Corps.’ He’s stripping our wallets and tossing the funds away.”

I also noticed that my neighbor’s pro-immigrant signs had been removed. I hesitated to mention his lawn redecoration program, but I asked if he’d changed his mind about the Democrats’ no-borders policy. He slapped a palm to his head, “The border states are overwhelmed and the Democratic congressional members from those states were in trouble enough when this week the CDC announced it was ending Title 42, Trump’s plan, which allowed the immigration officials to return border crossers and illegal aliens to their home countries. They’re estimating a least half a million border crossers will show up at the southern border EVERY MONTH!” He was shouting now. “EVERY MONTH,” that’s like the size of Atlanta, Georgia. or Fresno, California, every month!”

He was on a roll. “My daughter is a competitive swimmer, what do you imagine are my thoughts about transgenders competing against her? I was happy to see several states (Utah, Texas, Florida, South Dakota) are banning transgender competitors in women’s sports. I mean, what was Title IX about anyway, except giving women a chance to fairly compete? And what did Biden just do? I’ll tell you,” he said, without giving me a chance to respond. “He’s about to issue a new Title IX rule banning discrimination ’on the basis of sex stereotypes, sex-related characteristics, sexual orientation, and gender identity, whatever the heck this gibberish means — to me it means boys can put on girls’ sports costumes and compete against them if they feel like it.”

“This at the same time his Supreme Court nominee, touted as the first Black woman to be nominated to the Court, says she’s not a biologist and can’t define what a woman is.”

‘I see your point,” I said, “though I wouldn’t point the finger at Trump, but on those who voted for Biden. There was every indication this was how things were going to turn out.” As I said that, I noticed his wife was pulling the last sign out of their lawn.”

  11. interesting opinion…the entire nomination and confirmation process of Brown was illegal
    FTA
“President” Joe Biden violated federal law in his selection of a supreme court jurist solely based on her sex and race. He considered no one else, and instructed his gofers to ignore any other candidate. Apparently no white, Hispanic or Asian, or a male, had the qualifications to serve.

The president made his intent public. He then delivered on his promise knowing he’s violating the law of the land. With a few RINOs predictably playing along, Democrats in the senate on cynical partisan grounds, confirmed Biden’s selection. These affirmative votes violate the constitution by having confirmed a federal employee based only on her sex and race. With their votes, this gaggle of racists had agreed to discriminate and exclude other races and the opposite sexfrom gainful employment.

Employment based on sex and race is discriminatory under the laws of all fifty states. This is especially true for the bench that rules on cases of discrimination. Rulings for the entire nation can affect generations.

    snip

All of these activities are presumably supported by the state (see the first paragraph under CORNELL LAW above). Finally, the court is engaged in interstate commerce itself and cases bearing on civil rights by virtue of its previous rulings.

It is not merely the illegal nomination of a SCOTUS jurist that had violated the civil rights of other Americans and the judicial norms of color-blind justice.

    The selection dehumanized them too.

It is not merely the confirmation that has done likewise.

It is that confirming jurists based on their race and sex directly violates the civil rights of American voters of every creed, race and color, and candidates even more qualified were not being considered and not given a fair shake. Ultimately, it ended the possibility of the excluded jurists who would certainly have promulgated rulings that would have changed the course of history.

Joe Biden’s and the Democrat’s disingenuous and racist act violated the legitimate functioning of a democratic state, itsconstitution, and all institutions and courts of law across the land.

Every state in the union has become an aggrieved party. Every state has standing in that state’s federal court to bring civil rights actions based on the U.S. Constitution’s 14th amendment, against the racist and sexist acts of the president and Congress.

If the courts successfully ruled that the president’s nomination was illegal based on the premises outlined here, selective bias, it would make the confirmation illegal as well.

    1. Hey, Kea! Glad you liked it. I’ve got one coming up on the difference between Common Law and Corporate Law. Kind of long but informative, I think. Michael also gave me a book yesterday about the duties required of a military wife. I expect I’ll get an open out of that, too. This is why I could never marry an officer! LOL – more stringent requirements than an NCO’s wife.

            1. A group of us gals got together to see if we could make Miguel (my hubby’s roomie, the first ever Puerto Rican to be a Guard on the Tomb) break his stride. One gal had VERY big boobs – she stood at the end and when Miguel reached her end, she flashed him and she was not wearing a bra! Miguel didn’t even flinch! LOL

  14. From People Magazine: “Trevor Mosher and Audra Rhys have been calling their new puppy Fiona — after the ogre princess from the film Shrek — and with one look at the dog’s fur, it’s easy to see why.

According to Global News, Rhys and Mosher’s three-year-old valley bulldog, Freya, gave birth to seven healthy puppies, one right after the other, on Jan. 27 in Nova Scotia. Shortly after Freya sat down to rest with her new puppies, the bulldog gave birth to one more puppy. This young canine was born surrounded by a black sac, distinctly different from the translucent sacs the other puppies had.

Rhys and Mosher worried something was wrong with the last puppy until the baby dog started to move and make noise. As the married couple cleaned the last puppy off, they realized the canine’s light fur had a bright green tint.

“So we googled it, ‘my puppy is green, what’s wrong,’ and apparently it is very rare, and it has happened a few times all over the world,” Mosher told Global News. According to CNN, light-colored dogs are born green on rare occasions, likely after contact with biliverdin — a green pigment found in bile — while in the womb. The pigment dyes the fur before the puppy is born, and the color fades after the puppy enters the world.

Rhys told PEOPLE that Freya’s healthy green puppy, who she shares with American bulldog Loki, is already starting to lose her odd coloring and is now “a light lime green.”

  16. 67 attendees of high profile D.C. dinner test positive for Covid

Sixty-seven attendees have tested positive for Covid-19 after attending the Gridiron Dinner in Washington last weekend, including members of the Biden administration and reporters, according to Gridiron Club President Tom DeFrank.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who is fully vaccinated and boosted, tested positive for the virus on Friday and is experiencing mild symptoms, his office said in a statement on Saturday, adding to a fresh wave of cases that has swept through the nation’s capital.

Two other members of Biden’s Cabinet, Attorney General Merrick Garland and Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, tested positive last week after attending the annual social gathering of high-profile political media and business figures.

  17. Whoa! The “goal” of the college should be the overall well-being of the STUDENTS, not just to win!!!!!

Entire article @ DailyCaller: “The newly hired Grambling State University head volleyball coach has decided to cut every player from her team.

Chelsey Lucas was hired in February to lead the Lady Tigers volleyball team at GSU, the Minden Press Herald reported at the time. On April 4, she informed all 19 players on her team that their volleyball careers at GSU were over, according to Black Enterprise. Lucas informed the school’s administration of her decision to make changes to the team, but the firing of all players caught everyone “off-guard,” the outlet continued.

“She said that we weren’t able to practice much, which we weren’t and she said based off of that, she was not able to renew my scholarship so I didn’t really get any time to show what I could do. When I was in there and she told me, my heart completely broke. Of course and I didn’t cry in there, but I did when I left and it just hurts really bad, the fact that it was snatched away so fast,” former Lady Tigers volleyball player Maurisa Harris said of Lucas’s decision, KSLA reported.

Harris, a junior at GSU, had played for the team for three years, KSLA continued. She and her fellow teammates were told of the decision in individual meetings, where they were also informed that their scholarships would not be renewed, according to the outlet. Many players are now rushing to find other programs to transfer to despite it being so late in the off-season, Harris continued.

“The decision, it’s her decision to make and she’s got some quality players coming on board. I think 14 or 15 coming on board at some point, so in terms of things, I hate to say out with the old, but in with the new a little bit,” GSU Athletics Communications Director Brian Howard told KSLA. “Obviously we don’t want them to be cut or lose their scholarships or whatever that might be or whatever that might look like. At the end of the day, Coach Lucas has a goal, has a vision. We have a goal as an institution and a vision as well to win and that’s first and foremost.”

  18. And, of course, this coach is being excoriated for simply stating the truth….yes, kind of dismissive and careless about the family’s feelings but still true!

Not sure if you can listen, Pat – partial transcript:

“…he was a guy who was living to be dead, so to speak; they told him under any circumstances leave school early. You just don’t have the work habits, you don’t have this, you don’t have that. What did he do? He left school early.”

  19. Found a story about our friend, Miguel!!! A nice dream: that both HB’s Dad and I could have been at that reunion to see Miguel again!!! Would that be a trip or what??!!?? I used to stay overnight in the barracks with Chris; Miguel would get up in the morning and say good morning to Chris. I always replied, “Good morning, Miguel!” And he always just grunted – he didn’t approve of women in the barracks! LOL – I also used to tease him by calling him a “New Yorican.” He went off every time: “NO, NO, NO!!!! I not New Yorican!!! I Puerto Rican!!!!” It was a running joke between us.

    From November 2021:

Entire article: “While it’s a very popular tourist destination, the Tomb of the Unknown Solider at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, focus is usually put on the changing of the guard and the tomb, not those who are guarding it. Munson Army Health Center is proud to recognize an employee who made history during his service to the nation. Mr. Miguel Matos Mangual is a Network Information Technology Specialist at Munson Army Health Center Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Matos Mangual served as the first Puerto Rican member of the Old Guard, 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, from June, 1979 through July of 1982. Being a member of such a decorated crew wasn’t where he intended to wind up, this career path was rather unknown to him as well. “I didn’t know anything about the Tomb of the Unknown and their Sentinel,” he reveled. “While I was in basic training the unit had the opportunity to go to Washington, D.C. We were taken to Arlington National Cemetery and I saw the Sentinel for the first time.”

According to Mangual, the job stuck with him since the opportunity he had to visit while in basic training at Fort Dix, N.J. He didn’t really sink in too much until he was in training at Fort Benning, Ga and a few recruiters from the Old Guard approached him. He didn’t want to miss the opportunity to learn and live in the nation’s capital.

While the majority of visitors to the cemetery only see the walking in front of the tombs, there is more to the “walk.” The Sentinels inspect the areas, train each other on the history of the unit and make sure all uniforms are squared away. Doing the job of a Sentinel isn’t for the faint of heart. Neither snow, rain nor heat will stop their duty. Mangual recalled the time he was standing guard in a tropical storm.

“I stood outside with strong winds, rain, thunder and lightning,” he said. “As I reflect on this, I was walking outside, in a tropical storm, with a lightning rod on my shoulder.”

Despite the long hours, being out in the elements and all the hard work – Mangual looks back on the entire experience as quite the honor. “You are not only a Sentinel of the Guard, you are also a historian. You will learn the history of the cemetery of from the time it was to the present. As you learn more, you truly understand what it means to make the ultimate sacrifice for your country.”

Past and present members of the Old Guard gather every Veteran’s Day for a reunion. While this is always special, this reunion is a little bit more, as it is the 100th Anniversary of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The website tombguard.org emphasizes the celebration as “an opportunity to reflect on what the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier means to America.”

Mangual is especially excited for this reunion. He said he doesn’t go as often as he would like, but he definitely wouldn’t miss this chance to catch up with his old friends and be part of the Old Guard’s legacy.

      1. I really could care less, tbh. I have wondered now and then what’s happened with him. Last I knew, he had married a gal who had a farm here in the same county where I live – they had a little boy about a year or so before HB died. I seriously doubt they are still together – within the first year after they married, they separated for a while, until she turned up preggers. He’s no better at longevity in his marriages than I was! LOL – the last time we spoke, literally everyone who knew or was connected to HB was furious at him. He was an absolute ass after she died and he was NOT allowed to attend her Memorial, nor did anyone even tell him about it.

A few weeks later, SIL was doing a wholesale clean-out of the house and ran across an album that belonged to Chris. He was going to toss it but it had pics of his brother who had died and I just couldn’t do that. I e-mailed about it and we arranged for his wife to come by my house and pick up the album – but only if I would put it outside so she didn’t have to see me. SMDH – freaks, both of them!

  21. Hmmm….incredibly accomplished woman!!!

EXCERPTS: “Now living in Los Angeles (she is my mother-in-law), Rhoda was also an early supporter of President Donald Trump, and remains so today. Her journey holds lessons for a nation still wrestling with race and democracy.

Born in 1953 in Cape Town’s diverse District Six (later to be destroyed by the apartheid regime), Rhoda grew up classified as “Coloured,” or mixed-race. Her grandfather had been Clements Kadalie, a Malawian migrant who was the first black trade unionist in South Africa.

Her father was a musician-turned-pastor who moved the family to the suburb of Mowbray to run the city’s public laundry. But the area was declared “white,” and all of its black families were evicted in the early 1970s.
    ——————————-
She remained a member of the ANC, but criticized it from within, and supported the opposition Democratic Alliance (DA) during several elections — although she was also critical of the DA, too, especially its hurried promotion of black leaders to counter the party’s “white” image. Rhoda rejected political correctness, and was at her sharpest when criticizing the South African media, academia, and corporate leaders for their acquiescence in what we would now call “woke” racial ideology.

Rhoda eventually broke with Soros, and also spoke out in defense of Israel, defying the pro-Palestinian consensus on the left and speaking out against the antisemitism that often crept into anti-Israel activism. She infuriated her critics, but earned a wide base of readers and fans.

A close observer of American politics, Rhoda was skeptical of the rise of Barack Obama, seeing him as largely an empty shell. When then-Sen. Obama (D-IL) visited Cape Town and delivered a speech, she declined to attend, on principle. Few foresaw, as she did, that his presidency would end in disappointment. Conversely, Rhoda took an interest in Donald Trump, seeing him as a skollie — a “ruffian,” in South African slang — who would shake up a complacent American establishment.”
    ———————————
Trump was not the only candidate who impressed Rhoda. She enjoyed watching Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) take aim at Hillary Clinton, and cheered when businesswoman Carly Fiorina confronted Trump over his past rhetoric about women.

Today, Rhoda continues to argue for a more open American political debate, one less constrained by the same rules of political correctness and identity politics she believes have prevented South African democracy from achieving its potential. The chaos of the 2020 election left her disillusioned about American democracy, but she sees hope in the ongoing anti-“woke” backlash.

A committed Christian, Rhoda has also spoken out throughout her life for gay and lesbian rights. She has always been pro-choice, though she also opposes partial-birth abortion and has spoken out against the extremism of Planned Parenthood.

Rhoda has a unique ability to embrace political contradictions. Her approach to democracy is pragmatic, not ideological: she favors a diversity of views, even ones she dislikes, because it gives citizens the most leverage to hold politicians accountable. Her remarkable journey teaches that a true love of liberty transcends the categories that often confine our political thinking.”

  22. EXCERPT: “Palestinian rioters on Saturday night vandalized Joseph’s Tomb, one of Judaism’s holiest sites, setting it on fire and smashing the gravestone. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett expressed his “shock” over the incident that occurred near the West Bank city of Nablus.

“During the night Palestinians destroyed Joseph’s Tomb. Dozens of Palestinian rioters in a campaign of destruction simply violated a holy place for us, the Jews,” Bennett said at the start of the cabinet meeting. “We will not stand by such an assault on a place that is holy to us — on the eve of Passover — and we will get to the rioters,” he said. “And of course we will make sure to reconstruct what they destroyed, as we always do.”

Around 100 Palestinians broke into the site overnight amid clashes between Palestinian gunmen and Israeli troops nearby. The Israeli Defense Forces arrested eight Palestinian terror suspects. The raids were in response to a deadly terror attack in Tel Aviv on Thursday night in which three Israelis were gunned down.”
