America’s house is home to more than just presidents and their families.

Sure it’s been the site of intense diplomatic meetings, grand parties, and important declarations, but the White House is notoriously haunted by some very famous ghosts.

Two grieving first ladies—Abigail Adams and Mary Todd Lincoln—held seances in the White House, hoping to speak with the spirits of their dead children. Opening that door to speak with the dead apparently allowed a sinister presence to take up residence in the presidential estate. Something has been tormenting presidents, their families, and their staff for more than 100 years.

Abigail Adams

Abigail Adams, the wife of the second president, John Adams, did her own laundry when she lived in the White House, and there’s apparently still plenty of washing to be done. White House staffers have seen her ghost floating around the East Room with her arms holding an invisible load of laundry. Sometimes, they smell wet clothes or even the scene of lavender in the area.

Abraham Lincoln

The ghost of Honest Abe just can’t seem to move on following his 1865 assassination. There are numerous stories of Lincoln’s bearded ghost appearing to White House residents, staff, and visitors. A nude Winston Churchill, the British Prime Minister,once emerged from the bathroom to see Lincoln sitting in his room during a visit in the 1940s.

Lincoln is said to lurk around the Yellow Oval Room and the Lincoln bedroom. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt spent a lot of time working in the Lincoln bedroom, and she apparently saw him often. Calvin Coolidge’s wife, Grace, reportedly caught Lincoln looking out of a window in the Lincoln Bedroom. One night, Lady Bird Johnson was watching a documentary about Lincoln’s death when she said she felt his spirit nearby.

Ronald Reagan’s dog, Rex, is believed to have seen Lincoln’s ghost as well. Apparently the dog would regularly stand at the door to the Lincoln bedroom and bark, and the president believed Rex could see Lincoln.

Andrew Jackson

The nation’s seventh president apparently still spends time in his old bedroom where he can be heard laughing. Mary Todd Lincoln often said she heard Jackson stomping and swearing. Perhaps his ghost is reliving the raucous 1829 inauguration party in which the White House was effectively trashed by thousands of celebrants exploring the estate.

Harry Truman

Harry Truman once joked, “My choice early in life was either to be a piano player in a whorehouse or a politician. And to tell the truth, there’s hardly any difference.” Was it Truman’s piano that the Bush twins, Barbara and Jenna, heard in their room after their father, George W. Bush, took office?

William Henry Harrison

Harrison, the ninth president, holds the record for holding the office of president for the least amount of time—just 31 days—but his ghost has been there way longer than that. Apparently, William Henry Harrison left something in the attic, and he’s still walking around up there and looking for it to this day.

Dolley Madison

The wife of President James Madison is very protective over the Rose Garden. When Woodrow Wilson was President, an effort to move the garden was abandoned when people began seeing Molley Madison’s ghost, according to the Washington, Post.

    I’ve often wondered…there were stories Melania didn’t want to stay in the wh immediately after inauguration…and the rumors were it needed an exorcism…naturally we assumed because of obummer and his husband mike…LOL

            1. That would be wonderful but they will find a 2nd judge to overturn it and vice versa, ad nauseum……draw it out to the point where it would make no difference anyway. The damage will have been done. I know, I know…..thoroughly skeptical these days!!!

              1. I’m hoping they can get it to a federal level quickly–and scotus. if they want the law to be changed, so be it. by while the law remains, they cannot ignore it. i think scotus will slap them down…we’ll see.

  11. Yummy! My Chai Latte coffee pods should arrive today. I usually keep some on hand for a special treat now and then for myself. But I’ve looked at WM and HV, as well as here, for several months and they are nowhere to be found. Finally found them on Target’s website and ordered a box. Most Chai Latte people think of is tea but this is coffee – YUMMY coffee!!!

      1. Oh, it’s soooo yummy! I need to see if I can get flavored coffee beans – I’ve got a grinder. The only way I’ve ever seen it is in the Keurig pods – I have one of the mini-Keurigs. I used to drink it black many years ago but my daughter got me going on Caramel Machiatto creamer.

    During Andrew Johnson’s presidency, he was reportedly visited multiple times by Anna Surratt who was there to beg for a pardon on her mother’s behalf, her mother was Mary Surratt, a conspirator for Lincoln’s assassination. Years after her death, her ghost can still be witnessed banging on the doors of the White House in desperation for a pardon for her mother.

    An apparition that terrified the Taft administration and domestic staff in 1911, was one of an unidentified fifteen-year-old boy; even Major Archibald Butt, the military aid to President Taft acknowledged the ghost, saying it was, “a young boy about fourteen or fifteen years old … they say that the first knowledge one has of the presence of the Thing is a slight pressure on the shoulder, as if someone were leaning over your shoulder to see what you might be doing.” It was after this point that President Taft ordered Butt to make the White House staff aware that they would be fired if they ever repeated stories about the Thing.

    Modern Sightings

    These days the random apparition is still experienced by White House Staff and administration, though some administrations may be less forthcoming about these sightings. Thomas Jefferson, for example, is seen and heard playing his violin in the Yellow Oval Room, while Dolley Madison is said to protect the Rose Garden. John Tyler haunts the Blue Room where he proposed to Julia Gardner, his second wife. William Henry Harrison, the first president to die in the White House, haunts the attic and the smell of wet laundry and lavender are observed in the East Room where Abigail Adams hung laundry. David Burnes, the original owner of the land on which the Presidential Mansion now stands can be both seen and heard in the Yellow Oval Room.”

            1. every year for my granddaughter’s birthday (well, since she became old enough to enjoy shopping…) we take her on a shopping spree for Easter/ her birthday. My daughter decided since we live so far away and we always make a trip IN to see everybody the week before Christmas, she would “give” us Easter. Her mom and mother in law get Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. But they make the trek us here twice a year–Easter and hubby birthday–after all it IS her father…
              but I’m not bitter…LOL

  14. Absentee ballots in wisconsin must be dropped off by the voter–no ballot harvesting is permitted…yet in Racine, they feel that doesn’t pertain to them…

    Tuesday is Election Day in Wisconsin, and local races are on the ballot. Wanggaard’s challenge came as local election managers in Racine were getting started for the day.

    A Waukesha County judge ruled last January that only voters can return their own ballots. The ruling was part of a challenge to ballot drop boxes, which Republicans such as Wanggaard said opened the door for ballot harvesting.

    The Wisconsin Supreme Court upheld that ruling back in February.

    “The city of Racine is openly flaunting the circuit court, the Wisconsin Supreme Court and Wisconsin Elections Commission guidance,” Wanggaard added.

    In addition to accusing Racine’s election managers of ignoring the law, Wanggaard’s complaint says the city of Racine is essentially disenfranchising voters in parts of Racine County.

    “There is a Court of Appeals election, and county-wide elections happening today,” Wanggaard said. “Voters from all over are voting in those elections. The City of Racine is allowing ballot harvesting, but other municipalities voting in the same election are not. This is granting Racine voters additional rights, and an outsized influence in those elections.”

    The Elections Commission has not commented on Wanggaard’s challenge yet.

    But the issue of ballot harvesting as well as different rules for different election offices is sure to arise again. The Wisconsin Supreme Court is supposed to hear arguments in a case that will decide the issue of drop boxes sometime before the November election.

    And that fact left me with an admittedly wild theory about how Obama may intend to fix things: Obama’s aiming to get back into the Oval Office.

    My premise is that Obama fully understands that, if Biden is ousted immediately under the 25th Amendment, there are only idiots and incompetents to take his place. If it’s not Kamala Harris, then it’s Nancy Pelosi and, if not her, then Patrick Leahy, Antony Blinken, Janet Yellen, Lloyd Austin, Merrick Garland…. Obama knows none of these nonentities will secure the transformation he promised America. Instead, there are three steps to return Obama to the presidency:

    1. Have the Democrat establishment remove Kamala Harris from office, whether through threats or bribes.

    2. Have the Democrats declare that, because world instability (Ukraine, Putin, China) puts us at unprecedented risk, only a politically seasoned person can be Vice President, with Obama graciously accepting that role.

    3. Oust Biden using the 25th Amendment. And voila! President Obama (again). He can even have Stacey Abrams as his veep.

    The 22nd Amendment does not bar Obama from regaining the presidency this way. It only stops him from being “elected to the office.” The three steps above avoid an election.

    Obama will then have two-and-a-half years to lock down America’s “fundamental transformation” into a fully socialized, third-world country, and Biden has given him a head start when it comes to destroying institutions. Heck, if Obama does the job right, he can be the new Putin or Erdogan: America’s President for Life.

    And yes, I agree this sounds crazy, but events since 2020 show that we really are nothing more than a fancy banana republic.

  41. EXCERPTS: “In Chicago, the Sheraton Gateway Suites Hotel is an 11-story atrium hotel in O’Hare Airport’s Rosemont convention hub. Like many such buildings, a number of past guests have reportedly committed suicide by throwing themselves over the atrium railings; since one such incident in the Fall of 2001, the victim has been seen—in suit and tie—gazing over the east side of the atrium rail. A number of drug overdose deaths have also occurred here, and in such rooms guests have reported dark figures, disembodied voices and the dishevelment of their clothes and belongings, often while they are in the bathroom.

    Glimpse at the Haunted Hotels in Chicago

    The nearby O’Hare Hilton, directly across from the airport entrance, was long rumored to have an “uninhabitable” room—one that just made guests so inexplicably uncomfortable that they literally couldn’t sleep. The metropolitan cities in Chicago have their history of ghosts, like Aurora’s actively paranormal places. There’s the Baymont Inn and Suites, where employees have witnessed balls of white light in the lobby area, and where guests are repeatedly driven from room 208 by a spirit who seeks to strangle them in their sleep.

    There is the old Leland Park, also in Aurora, haunted by a number of guests who have reportedly checked in, not to stay the night, but to throw themselves into the Fox River from this, one of the tallest buildings in the city. Noxious odors and disembodied voices are reportedly rife in the building, now an apartment development.

    The Hotel Florence, in Chicago’s historic Pullman district, is rumored to be haunted by a woman who lived in the hotel at one time, and the hip House of Blues Hotel is home to a number of phantoms in the larger ghostworld of Marina City, including that of a young girl believed to have died in the hotel structure when it was an office complex.

    The Drake Hotel, jewel of Lake Shore Drive, is home to the famed “Woman in Red”–a tragic young woman who jumped off the roof on the hotel’s opening night in 1920 after discovering her fiance in the arms of another woman.

    Among the multitude of haunted hotels in Chicago, however, none–or even all of them together–can touch the granddaddy of them all: the Congress Plaza.”

    1. “Since 1989, I have participated in more than 3 dozen investigations of the Congress Plaza, documenting no fewer than 47 distinctively haunted rooms and at least two ballrooms, as well as common areas such as employee workrooms and public guest areas. The sheer variety of phenomena reported and experienced at this massive structure is mind-boggling. Truly, there seems to be no end to the historic tragedy or of its supernatural manifestations.

      The Florentine Room, an ornately painted ballroom, was originally also used as a roller rink when the hotel opened to World’s Fair visitors in the 1890s. Security guards say that, on their wee-hour rounds, cheerful organ music can still be heard from outside the locked doors, as well as the sound of old wooden skate wheels against the wooden floors. The piano is known to play by itself, and a woman may be heard screaming outside a staff door on the east side of the room. The women’s restroom is likewise haunted by a female presence, who appears in the mirrors, staring at the living and following them out down the hallway.

      In the lavish Gold Room—a hotspot for Chicago wedding receptions—bride and groom are often chilled by photographers’ photos. Those snapped around the grand piano tend to develop with one or more people missing from the pictures, and the doors tend to be found unlocked no matter how often they are securely shuttered.

      In the South Tower, there is the phantom who lingers at the fifth floor passenger elevator, where moaning is frequently heard by guests awaiting its arrival. The third floor hallways are home to a one-legged man, often reported to the front desk by guests who think a vagrant has found his way inside. One former hotel operator who worked the property in the 1940s remembers a resident with a wooden leg who always had a big smile and a big tip, who suffered a heart attack at breakfast during his residency and died.

      Also in the South Tower, a young boy of about ten has been a prolific presence, running up and down the halls in knee breeches and high button boots. Guessing at his identity, some tie him to one of the many families who made their homes at the hotel in years gone by, and the all-too-common deaths from then-incurable illnesses like tuberculosis and pneumonia.”

  43. The frigging wind yet again – and all thru the night! Sheesh! It’s enough to drive me to drink!!! Rain all around us, supposedly changing to snow in the next day or so, then back to spring-like weather. Yet not one drop here yet! They’ve already said that most will go around us.

    3/ I recalled that this same neighborhood in Malibu had a famous celebrity drug rehab place called Promises. Ben Affleck went there a bunch. It’s closed now. The house circled in red below is Hunter’s house. These pix are from the DM story.”
