Hidden Gems in Nebraska

From TheCrazyTourist website

Once known as the “Great American Desert,” Nebraska is a state situated on the Great Plains region of the United States of America. It is the only state in the nation to be triply landlocked, meaning that one must travel across three other states to get to the nearest body of water.

The state derives its name from the Omaha words Ní Btháska and Otoe words Ñí Brásge, both meaning “flat water.” The state houses 93 counties, split into two different time zones – the eastern part of Nebraska follows Central Time whereas the western part follows Mountain Time.

Did you know that Nebraska’s Lied Jungle rainforest is the largest indoor rainforest in the world? Did you also know that the ‘911’ emergency call system was first used in the capital of Nebraska – Lincoln?

Indigenous tribes such as Omaha, Otoe, Pawnee, and Missouria occupied the state for several thousand years before settlers from Spain and France sought control over the region. Nebraska, the 37th state of U.S., was admitted to the union in 1867. Nebraska is rich in history, geography, and culture yet it is one of the least visited states. Let us explore some of the hidden gems in Nebraska and see what they offer us.

Sioux Army Depot, Potter
Founded on March 23rd, 1942 as Sioux Ordnance Depot, the Sioux Army Depot was the only Ammunition Depot of the U.S. Army in Nebraska that was in use during World War II, the Korean War, as well as the Vietnam War. Initially managed by the Ordnance Department, the Army Depot was handed over to the U.S. Army Materiel Command.

The Depot was established with an aim to receive, store, and issue all types of weaponries ranging from small arms to 10,000-pound explosives. The Depot was also responsible for providing all types of automobile parts and other critical materials that may be required by the U.S. Army.

Spread across 19,771 acres of land, the Sioux Army Depot comprised 801 ammunition storage igloos, 392, supportive buildings, 225 residential quarters, 22 general warehouses, 203 miles of road, and 51 miles of rail tracks.

Deactivated in June 1967, the “igloos” are now used by farmers as a storage facility and garage to house their supplies and equipment.

Carhenge, Alliance
An unusual way to commemorate a loved one, Carhenge in Alliance, Nebraska was created by Jim Reinders, an experimental artist, as a way to honor his beloved father who passed away in 1982.

Greatly inspired by Stonehenge, the iconic monument in Wiltshire, England, Carhenge was established in 1987 with a bunch of 38 automobiles arranged in the exact structure of the original England monument. The vehicles used in the composition include cars, trucks, a 1962 Cadillac (the heel stone), and an ambulance.

All the pieces in this unique formation have been spray painted in the shade of grey and the installation was completed just in time for the Summer Solstice. A visitor center was added in 2006. Carhenge has played a significant part in several movies and television programs. Most recently, it was the site where State Governor Pete Ricketts and 4,000 Nebraskans watched the solar eclipse that occurred on August 21st, 2017.

Harold Warp’s Pioneer Village, Minden

Spread over 20 acres of land, Pioneer Village is a replica town which was established by a small-time business turned millionaire, Harold Warp, who, through his creation, wanted to portray the typical rags-to-riches American dream.

Warp, a boot-strapping businessman from Minden, Nebraska worked his way through from living in a “soddy” to becoming a millionaire. And, once he acquired all that wealth, instead of investing it in a mansion or a yacht, he decided to dedicate his life’s earning in creating a replica town that celebrated the opportunities that America rewarded him with.

Founded in 1953, the Pioneer Village includes a collection of 28 buildings which include some of the historic buildings from Warp’s hometown, an exact replica of his sod house, a vast collection of automobiles, and unusual artifacts such as Lincoln’s sugar bowl. All the structures in the village are positioned in a chronological order, depicting a gradual process of America’s evolution and achievements.

William Thompson’s Scalped Scalp, Omaha

In August 1867, William Thompson, an English repairman hired by the Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, was sent to the small town of Lexington to fix an inoperative telegraph wire. Thompson, along with his fellow repairmen, were on their way to the town when a group of 25 Cheyenne tribe members attacked the train.

The rail coach derailed, and all men aboard were killed except for Thompson – he was shot in the shoulder and his scalp was scraped off of his skull. Thompson fainted due to the torture, which must have saved his life since the attackers mistook him as dead and left the scalp next to him.

Upon regaining senses, Thompson went back to Omaha and consulted Dr. Richard Moore on reattaching his scalp. Unfortunately, it wasn’t possible, so Thompson put his scalp on display instead and capitalized it. In 1900, Thompson sent the scalp back to Dr. Moore, who in turn donated the weird specimen to the public library.

Today, William Thompson’s scalp rests in a darkroom and is displayed only on special occasions.

  3. how is he NOT arrested already??? hunter’s laptop had DoD encryption keys???
    FTA
    This story is developing…

CDMedia has confirmed the Hunter Biden infamous ‘laptop from Hell’ contains many U.S. Department of Defense ‘root encryption certificates’, or encryption keys to DoD databases. The keys have unusual long-term expiration dates, with many lasting twenty years or more.

This information was discovered during a deep forensic investigation done over the last couple weeks, by Jack Maxey and his team in Switzerland.

This situation raises multiple questions, such as…

Why did Hunter Biden have a large number of Department of Defense encryption codes to allow access to national security data?
Did Hunter Biden give anyone else access to this information?
Who gave the codes to Hunter Biden?
Why do the codes have long-term expiration dates, when the usual practice is to provide a user access only during his ‘need to know’, or time in the job, which is usually 2-3 years at most?

We have been informed the Department of Justice has been alerted to the situation.

We have also been informed the DoD has been told of the discovery.

          1. cool! maybe you can answer this question for me. we built the house 15 years ago and we did the tile work. the floors came out great (bathrooms entryways and kitchen). but as the house settled over the years, the kitchen backsplash grout developed a crack–only on one side. the grout is still intact but that crack annoys me. can it be repaired do you think or will we have to somehow remove all the grout and regrout?

            Liked by 2 people

            1. If you can still get the matching grout color you could just redo the cracked part. I have gone back over little spots in by bathroom that I missed the first go round.

            1. Still cheaper than having it done though! I spent a lot several years ago when I did the bathroom. Quite a bit was for all the tools that you need. The kitchen has not been that bad because I just had to buy materials. We have spread it out over the last 3-4 months too.

I hired my SIL to do the work and either he or his Father already had the tools – in reality, it probably cost me more and took MUCH longer but…..if afforded me flexibility that I wouldn’t have had with a contractor. Plus, he needed an escape from the toxic atmosphere at home and they really needed the $$$ so….

          1. Nebraska: It’s not for everyone!

EXCERPT: “Nebraska knows the state is “not for everyone” and it’s proud of that in a new ad campaign.

“We’re just simply not on people’s shopping list for a vacation,” said John Ricks, executive director of the Nebraska Tourism Commission, on ABC News’ “Start Here” podcast.

New Nebraska Tourism advertisements boast of the state’s “flat, boring landscape” and “dusty” Great Plains as part of a self-deprecating marketing campaign to tackle its “brand apathy” problem.”

  6. Map of NE – you will see Scottsbluff way out west in the panhandle. I live slightly east and north of O’Neill, Mom lives in a small town about 15 miles south of Norfolk; sister lives waaay down south, near Beatrice – only 30 miles from the KS state line. Various nieces and nephews scattered around the state, most in small towns around Norfolk. My uncle’s ranch is near Scottsbluff – he died some time ago but I think his wife and daughters still own the ranch. That’s where Mom took Rhoda, the woman paralyzed to the neck with MS – she had never been to a ranch and wanted to be a cowboy – that was accomplished with the cow shit on the tires of her wheelchair!

    1. I worked on the tracks at Grand Island in the spring (they have now moved the State Fair to GI and still have race-days but not nearly as many as in the old days; the expansion of GI has pretty much destroyed the area – soooo disgustingly commercial now and overrun with Hispanics, many of whom don’t speak English); next, we went to Columbus; followed by Omaha (AkSarBen is pretty much gone now); Lincoln (no races there now); and So. Sioux City, which is not on this map – it has also been shut down, altho a group of horsemen were hatching a plan to start a private track – not sure anything ever came with that. It is directly across the river from Sioux City, IA. NE did finally approve off-track betting so now the tracks are filled with machines! Oh, I miss the old days!

  7. EXCERPT: “CARACAS — The news that President Joe Biden sent a delegation to meet socialist dictator Nicolás Maduro took Venezuelans by surprise. The possibility of Venezuela once again selling oil to the United States and America easing sanctions against the Maduro regime triggered a wide array of different opinions across the Venezuelan political spectrum.

While the Biden administration has said that it won’t import Venezuelan oil “at this time” – following outrage from Venezuelan-Americans and other anti-socialist Hispanics at home – Venezuelans have much reason to remain skeptical about that statement. Throughout the 2020 U.S. presidential campaign, Biden was sold to the Venezuelans as a tough leader who would promote and increase sanctions against the Maduro regime. Democrats assured voters Biden would not negotiate with Maduro at all. Sending a delegation to Venezuela to discuss the possibility of easing sanctions and acquiring oil from the Maduro regime paints a different picture of what was promised.

Oil revenue is a fundamental instrument of the Venezuelan socialist regime. Declaring that Venezuelan oil “belongs to its people” has been one of the key narrative elements employed throughout these past two decades — yet, the Venezuelan people have never reaped much from it and saw little to none of the fruits of the oil bonanza of the late 2000s beyond the handouts of the Revolution. The majority of the profits simply vanished or were used by the socialist regime to further spread ideological influence throughout the region and beyond.”

  8. Granted, it isn’t nearly as big an issue here in NE – about the only place you’ll find this insanity is in the cities. Yes, sadly, that includes the University of NE and it is beginning to trickle out….SMH – nothing on the radar here on this subject as far as I know. Unfortunately, in small towns such as mine, there is still a good bit of prejudice towards those who are gay, considering the religiosity that is prevalent in NE.

EXCERPT: “Arizona, Oklahoma, and Kentucky on Thursday joined the ranks of other states whose Republican-led legislatures have passed bills to protect girls’ sports from transgender activists.

          1. Why do you think I ALWAYS avoid the cities??? When I first came back from VA in 2009, I figured the best place to live would be Lincoln for the job opportunities. They pay much more than in Norfolk and there were many more opportunities.

So I rented a cheap studio apartment only 2 blocks from the Capitol building. I found out pretty quickly it was on the road to becoming a tenement. Good heavens! Roaches abounded until I got busy with the boric acid powder; I never actually had the gas hooked up – too much $$$ – so I did all my cooking either via the MW or my large electric skillet. Pretty much all of the household appliances and such went with HB so I visited the nearby Goodwill store & WM to pick up a few items.

Every single day, when I walked outside, there were needles, beer cans and liquor bottles scattered everywhere. It wasn’t the worst part of Lincoln but certainly one of the least pleasant. Of course, I promptly made some personal connections, both in the building and across the street – really needed for personal safety issues.

  9. SMDH – once again, this cry-baby shows he is NOT a Constitutionalist, nor does he believe in freedom!

EXCERPT: “Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined the Supreme Court’s majority decision in its vote to allow the Pentagon to consider Navy SEALs’ vaccination status in making deployment decisions. Although conservative Justices Clarence Thomas, Samuel Alito, and Neil Gorsuch dissented, Kavanaugh joined the majority’s decision to not intervene with the military’s coronavirus vaccine mandate.

Kavanaugh wrote in a concurring opinion:

‘I concur in the Court’s decision to grant the Government’s application for a partial stay of the District Court’s preliminary injunction for a simple overarching reason: Under Article II of the Constitution, the President of the United States, not any federal judge, is the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.’

Kavanaugh claimed the district court “in effect inserted itself into the Navy’s chain of command” by halting the military vaccine mandate.

Thirty-five Navy SEALs brought this lawsuit after President Joe Biden’s administration mandated the coronavirus vaccine for all service members. U.S. District Judge Reed O’Connor of the Northern District of Texas issued an order preventing the Navy from considering the vaccine status of SEALs when giving deployments and other operational assignments in January. Biden’s administration appealed Judge O’Connor’s ruling to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, which refused to override O’Connor’s preliminary injunction blocking the military’s mandate.

The Supreme Court on Friday issued a stay on the district court’s injunction, allowing the Navy to consider vaccination status for deployments while litigations surrounding the mandate continue.

The SEALs alleged the Navy’s vaccine mandate violated their First Amendment right to religious freedom. However, Kavanaugh claimed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act “does not justify judicial intrusion into military affairs in this case.”

  10. What BS!!! Let all of those corporations that are raping the lands pay for the catastrophes they have caused!!!!! Suck up all the natural resources, send the $$$$ out of the country, and leave scraps for the Indigenous people!!!! Put it where the sun never shines, UN!!!!

EXCERPT: “A senior UN official has warned that Europe must either pay for more food aid abroad or face a “Hell on Earth” migrant crisis. Pay for the food of the developing world or face another migrant crisis — this is the ultimatum the head of the UN’s World Food Programme has put to Europe’s leaders.

The dramatic warning comes as the global organisation begins to struggle to pay for the food it gives to famine-stricken parts of the world, with the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine disrupting food supply globally and, by extension, driving up prices. Now, according to a report by POLITICO, the food programme’s head has warned that its project is in jeopardy, and that Europe either needs to cough up more funds for the UN group’s mission or face a terrible migrant crisis.

“We’re billions short,” said World Food Bank Executive Director David Beasley. “Failure to provide this year a few extra billion dollars means you’re going to have famine, destabilization, and mass migration.”

  11. Dadgum it! Just had to open your fricking mouth, didn’t you, Sally? I am now truly ashamed that I looked so much like her when I was young!!!! My nickname at Church camp was Gidget!

EXCERPT: “Actress Sally Field says that if she sees Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) or Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R), she “cannot be responsible for what I would do.” “Those men who are doing that, and they’re mostly male governors who are doing it, are so backward, so ignorant and really just power hungry,” the Forest Gump star told Variety, after being asked what she thinks of these pro-life legislation in states like Texas and Florida.

“I think it’s criminal. They’re so wanting to roll back the achievements and important progress for women, for blacks, for the LGBTQ community. I can’t say enough horrible things about what I feel about those men,” Sally Field continued said while not specifying what’s “criminal” about what’s being done.

“If you see them coming toward me, those two governors specifically [Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis], lead me out of the way because I cannot be responsible for what I would do. Heidi [she addresses her publicist, who is in the room],” Field declared. “Do you hear me? Lead me away,” the Smokey and the Bandit actress said.

For Field, the climate change campaigner and pro-abortion agitator is preaching politics the way she said she would several years ago.”

A poll released by the firm Ifop on behalf of Sud Radio has revealed that 66 per cent of French saw the mass remigration of illegals, foreign criminals, and foreigners on terrorist watchlists, such as the S-File, as an objective they would support. Support for the measure was highest among supporters of the Reconquest party led by presidential candidate Eric Zemmour, with 97 per cent agreeing with the proposal.

  13. Good for him! (UK)

EXCERPT: “Graham Linehan, the cancelled co-creator of Father Ted, has once again defied the trans lobby by insisting that “women are real”. The co-creator of hit TV comedy Father Ted has once again doubled-down on his defiance of the trans lobby, insisting in an interview that “women are real”.

Linehan has come under extreme pressure from hardline trans activists in the past, with the comedian claiming that he has received visits from the British police multiple times over reports from people he describes as “trolls”. However, despite the Irishman saying that the trans lobby “took everything” from him in an interview with the BBC, he has doubled down on his positions.

“The one thing about this that keeps me going is that I know I’m right,” Linehan said regarding the harassment he has faced. “When you open up a newspaper and you see the words used… about sexual offenders who have suddenly decided they’re women, and the word[s] ‘her penis’ comes up… every time I see something like that I just think well, I’m right, and everyone else is wrong,” he explained.

“[I]n this particular case, I gotta say, sex is important, women are real, women’s language is important, women need words like women to describe themselves — these are all just basic things.”

  14. Might be an interesting book for Kea to review…..

EXCERPT: “The first thing you should know about To Boldly Grow: Finding Joy, Adventure, and Dinner in Your Own Backyard, Tamar Haspel’s witty recounting of sustenance and self-sufficiency, is that you do not need to own a patch of soil to appreciate what the book is about.

The next: While this review will strive for critical autonomy, the reviewer is decidedly biased. The author, her husband Kevin, and I have been pals since 2013, when Tamar began writing her food policy and nutrition column for the Washington Post. After all, as Pauline Kael said, “Every good critic is a propagandist.”

Not that it’s necessary, but I can verify that guests who gather near the wood-fired oven the couple built are treated to some damn fine pizza, topped with clams they harvested, herbs they snipped, and sausage ground with a researched ratio of fat to flesh. I can confirm that each learning curve Tamar describes—raising chickens, backing up a boat trailer, keeping slugs away from nascent shiitake mushrooms—started with the same humility and intellectual curiosity that have fueled Tamar’s decades of journalism.

Those traits beget the book’s many entertaining tangents. In the chapter called “Plants Everlasting,” the author ponders the evolution of organic gardening and natural pesticides, or as she puts it, “a global conspiracy hatched by the pests themselves. … The leaf rollers wrote the mission statement, the cutworms did the PR, and the slugs—well, they were supposed to set up the website, but they never got around to it.”

Spinosad is the pesticide Tamar chooses. But before she reports on its effectiveness in combating the insect ravages of their collards, we are treated to the backstory of who invented the natural compound: An Eli Lilly scientist let a Caribbean soil sample ferment for years. Turns out that particular bacterium, Saccharopolyspora spinosa, can kill leaf beetles but not whatever was chewing on their garden greens.

A single application of Sevin does the trick, which is a liquid version of the not-so-natural pesticide a youthful Kevin saw his father deploy on backyard tomatoes. It had been Kevin’s first choice.”

I have no idea if there is a different taste between purple and green – I’ve never tried a purple one but, I expect it is just like the similarity between red and green cabbage. Look around the cuke section, leeks, etc.

  15. Clearly, far too many Americans still have their heads up their asses!!! Including war monger, Condoleezza Rice and at least 90% of the GOP!

EXCERPTS: “Stefanik’s peace through strength message comes amid perceptions of a growing appetite for isolationism in the Republican Party. This was not evident at the House retreat, where over a Thursday lunch members heard from former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, who, according to several members in attendance, received a standing ovation for her criticism of Biden’s weak posture.
    ——————-
“The more we let fear of escalation drive our policy, the more space you get Putin to escalate,” Waltz told the Free Beacon. Biden’s hesitancy to state clear redlines for the Russians, Waltz argued, is “actually a dangerous and escalatory position” for the United States.

Waltz said the perception that isolationism is gaining traction on the right is due to an “outsized voice” by a minority of the party. “Look at our votes, look at our statements, it’s overwhelming,” Waltz said. “It’s peace through strength, American leadership, fight forward, if we don’t lead who will?”

The lack of appetite for isolationism is also apparent in the Republican electorate—a Free Beacon poll of primary voters in Pennsylvania found that only 14 percent want the United States to do nothing to fight off Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

  16. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy Negotiating Speaking at the Oscars

Ukranian President and former actor Volodymyr Zelenskyy is reportedly negotiating making a speech during the 2022 Oscars.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences award show airs on Sunday.

“Academy officials still are debating on whether Zelenskyy will indeed appear briefly on the show, sources said. It’s also not clear if he would appear live or in a taped message. Sources said the debate centers on whether the Oscars should remain apolitical as the Russian invasion of Ukraine rages on,” the New York Post reports.

The Oscars have been in a ratings free fall since the shows became massively political during the Trump administration.

“ABC, which is broadcasting the show, is said to be in favor of Zelenskyy, a former actor, making a statement. ABC did not return requests for comment,” the Post report continued.

Actress Mila Kunis, who was born in Ukraine, and her husband Ashton Kutcher, are expected to make a statement during the show. They have raised $35 million for Ukrainian refugees.

  17. Anyone missing all of this back-pedaling is seriously blind!!!!

EXCERPT: “Dr. Mehmet Oz criticized Trump-era trade policies toward Beijing in an interview on Chinese state TV.

Oz, who is running for Senate in Pennsylvania, told Chinese state media network CGTN in July 2018 that he opposed trade wars with China and supported closer collaboration in the field of medical research. Oz gave the interview to CGTN, which operates under the Chinese Communist Party’s propaganda department, as part of a promotional tour for a supplement company with extensive business ties to China.

Oz’s remarks appear to contradict his recent comments on U.S. policy toward China. He urged President Joe Biden this week to “get tougher” on Beijing. He has also accused the Chinese government of manipulating its currency and stealing American intellectual property. Oz’s comments could put him at odds with President Donald Trump, who is yet to endorse a candidate in the Republican primary. Trump imposed tariffs against China in 2018 over its unfair trade practices.”
