Solar Eclipse Safety

In lieu of the upcoming solar eclipse, I went looking for eyewear safety and found this article from 2022 on WebMD, and I wanted to bring it here.

What to Know About Solar Eclipse Glasses

Medically Reviewed by Mahammad Juber, MD on August 30, 2022

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon blocks all or part of the sun from your view. Solar eclipses can be partial or total. Although there are two solar eclipses yearly, they are only visible in some areas.

A total solar eclipse, where the moon completely blocks the view of the sun, only happens an average of once every 350 years in a specific location. If you’re lucky enough to be in the path of a solar eclipse, though, it’s important to use solar eclipse glasses to protect your eyes.

Solar Eclipse Eye Protection

Watching a solar eclipse is an awe-inspiring experience, but looking directly at the sun can damage your eyes.

Your retina is located at the back of your eye. It transmits images of what you see to your brain. The light from the sun can damage or destroy the cells on your retina, leading to solar retinopathy, also known as “eclipse blindness”.

What Are Solar Eclipse Glasses?

The only way to safely look at the sun during an eclipse is with solar eclipse glasses. Solar eclipse glasses are made with solar filters that conform to a worldwide safety standard known as ISO 12312-2. Regular sunglasses or homemade solar filters are not safe for watching an eclipse because they transmit sunlight at a rate that is thousands of times too high.

Here are some tips for safely watching a solar eclipse:

Check your solar eclipse glasses before using them. If you see any scratches or damage, don’t use them.

Follow the instructions that come with your solar eclipse glasses or solar viewer.

Supervise children to make sure they’re using solar eclipse glasses correctly.

Cover your eyes with your solar eclipse glasses before you look at the sun. Look away before you remove your glasses.

During the totality, the time when it gets dark becomes the sun is completely blocked out, you can take off your glasses and look at the eclipse. As soon as the sun begins to reappear, though, you need to put your glasses back on.

Never use a camera, binoculars, or telescope to look at a solar eclipse, even if you have your eclipse glasses on. These devices will intensify the sun’s rays and damage your solar eclipse glasses and your eyes.

Enjoy the eclipse safely!

  1. Hi Pat & gang, here’s a bit about my newest granddaughter ❤

Thank you so much for praying for my daughter-in-law & granddaughter in the labor & delivery process last week, & for many prayers for my family over the years. We finally got to meet granddaughter #3 a couple days ago & she is so very precious.

This is Finley Anne & she weighed 9# 1oz at birth. Though that’s the biggest baby in at least 3 generations of our family she seemed relatively tiny compared to her 22 month old sister & cousin Lillian, who will be 1 later this month. How time flies!

We were especially touched in Finley’s middle name which is after my husband’s mother, who was deceased before we’d even met so none of our kids, nor myself, has known this precious lady in this life. Thankfully she came to the Lord before her untimely passing so we all look forward to meeting & rejoicing together in Eternity. More than anything Anne wanted grandkids but she was taken by cancer before any of her 3 sons became fathers. Now it is entirely possible that only my husband will be giving his mom great-grandkids.

Grandma Anne’s artistry & creativity already show in several of our children’s giftings. It will be fascinating to see how other family traits may show up in an unfolding manner in this latest generation as they grow & develop…

Already Finley is showing a different personality from her big sister Lilah & she is quite the cuddler. L has been getting over a cold & having a bit of a challenging adjustment from being de-throned as a former only child. Her dad experienced it quite violently when our twins were born almost 3 decades ago & we stayed at his grandparents’ home for nearly 3 months while his brothers were in the NICU & later the youngest one had open heart surgery then only home for a week before back to the hospital w/ RSV.

We are so thankful that this young family is experiencing a much more natural expansion in a much more peaceful, non-traumatic manner. Our son took off work all last week to assist in the family transition time more actively, & this was So Much Better than what happened when Lilah was born but had to be hospitalized for the first week.

God has been so good to us all & we are most thankful for this latest bundle of joy!

      1. That’s so cute! I don’t think any nurses gave nicknames to any of my babies, though the high-risk OB called Josiah “the little guy” when he did my ultrasound.

Here’s my babies’ weights in birth order, last one’s my only girl: 7# 11 1/2oz; 5# 4oz; 2# 6oz; & 7# 4oz. My first, being the biggest actually tore me up pretty badly (4th degree lacerations into the rectal muscle per staff at my daughter’s L & D) so it’s been 3+ decades of some degree of bathroom challenges–definitely Don’t wait too long when you need to Go–LOL!

  2. On Monday April 8 2024 – the day of the solar eclipse – I’ll be driving Sally to the Orthopedist for her post surgery follow up appointment.

It’s also the anniversary of my first marriage to a young USAF student pilot – we were married 7 weeks when he was killed when his jet plane flipped landing in a cross wind. It still hurts.

Let me be clear – there is an organized effort by the political Left right now to buy off and compromise members of Congress to make them quit.

They are actually trying to STEAL the majority that the American people gave to the Republican Party!

And they should not have enablers and co-conspirators in our movement to facilitate that.

    https://sharylattkisson.com/2024/04/236-billion-in-federal-tax-money-lost-or-wasted-last-year/

-“The following is an excerpt from Epoch Times.”

“An estimated $236 billion in improper or incorrect payments was made under the Biden administration last year, with Medicare and Medicaid accounting for $100 billion of that total, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO).

“For fiscal year 2023, 14 agencies reported a total estimated $236 billion in improper payments across 71 programs,” said a March 26 GAO report. Improper payments refer to payments “that should not have been made or were made in the incorrect amount.” The $236 billion calculation does not include certain government programs that agencies determined were “susceptible to significant improper payments.”

  5. Just The News: “Officials are taking the first step to reopen the Port of Baltimore by clearing a temporary alternate channel near the collapsed Francis Scott Key Bridge for essential commercial vessels.

“By opening this alternate route, we will support the flow of marine traffic into Baltimore,” Capt. David O’Connell, the federal coordinator of the Key Bridge Response, said Sunday.

The channel will be on the northeast side of the main channel near the bridge, and it is part of a phased reopening of the primary channel. As part of the cleanup, demolition crews on Sunday used tow crane barges to cut into portions of the collapsed bridge truss.

Six construction workers are presumed dead after they were working on the bridge last Tuesday when a vessel lost power and hit the bridge, causing a collapse within seconds. Only two bodies of the six workers have been recovered.

The collapse has caused issues with shipping and transportation. The Key Bridge carried more than 34,000 vehicles a day on average last year, according to the Transportation Department. The Port of Baltimore is a major import and export hub and is the 10th largest port for dry bulk goods.”

  6. Golly-gee – who’d a thunk it!!!

Just The News: “California fast-food chains are laying off workers, raising prices and deciding against opening new stores as the state implements a minimum wage that is more than 175% higher than that required by the federal government.

California implemented a minimum wage for all workers at $16 per hour effective Jan. 1, 2024, although some individual municipalities have implemented higher minimum wage requirements. The new $20-an-hour minimum wage that goes into effect Monday only applies to fast-food workers, who will see their hourly wages rise by as much as 25%.

All fast-food employees, regardless of age, will see a $20 an hour minimum wage in California. This is significantly higher than the federal minimum wage of $7.25 for adults and the youth minimum wage of $4.25, which applies to employees under the age of 20 during their first 90 consecutive days of work with an employer.

Alex Johnson, who owns 10 Auntie Anne’s Pretzels and Cinnabon bakeries across the San Francisco Bay Area said his sales have slowed down in 2024, forcing him to layoff employees and even use his parents to help with human resources, according to The Associated Press.

The wage increase will cost Johnson about $470,000 annually, so he plans on raising prices between 5% and 15%. He is also no longer hiring new employees or looking to open more stores.

“I try to do right by my employees. I pay them as much as I can,” Johnson said. “But this law is really hitting our operations hard.”

Two Pizza Hut franchisees said they planned to lay off more than 1,200 delivery drivers and switch to using third-party delivery services such as Uber Eats and DoorDash, which requires customers to pay more for deliveries, per Business Insider.

The Southern California Pizza Company and PacPizza, both Pizza Hut franchisees, such as expressed plans to layoff about 1,200 employees as well.

Fast-food employees may be the only ones to have received a boost in pay for now, but the minimum wage for California healthcare facility workers is expected to rise to $21 per hour on June 1, 2024, and eventually increase to $25 per hour by 2028.”

Our Take: “The regime players tried everything they could to prevent this moment, but it’s official: Trump is appealing Engoron’s egregious abuses of power and discretion in the NY Civil Fraud trial.

The decisions made by this judge resulted in manifest injustice against President Trump. The judge’s penalties are cruel and unusual by any definition. Engoron’s decisions and choices in this case will now be reviewed.

I came up with the idea to make Pluto Arizona’s state planet because of the historical significance of the discovery,” Wilmeth said.
“Is it a planet? While many believe it is now a dwarf planet, others in the astronomical community still view it as a planet. But that argument is missing the point. What I wanted to do with this bill is celebrate Arizona’s important achievements in space and astronomy while remembering our state’s unique history,” he continued.
Wilmeth thanked Hobbs for signing the bill.

The terrorist ambushed passing vehicles from the side of the road, firing at them from a standing position and then immediately fleeing the scene, according to eyewitnesses.

    @charliekirk11

Suppose Donald Trump flips Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada next fall, as current polls all show him doing. Would he win the presidency? Not quite. In fact, if Trump flips those three states and no others, he loses by exactly ONE electoral vote. Why? Nebraska. Despite being one of the most Republican states, Nebraska awards its electoral votes by Congressional district instead of winner-take-all. Thanks to this system, Omaha’s electoral vote leans blue: Obama won it in 2008, and Biden won it in 2020. He’s likely to win it again this year. California would never do this. New York would never do this. And as long as that’s the case, neither should we. This is completely fixable. Nebraska’s legislature can act to make sure their state’s electoral votes go towards electing the candidate the VAST majority of Nebraskans prefer. There’s already a bill ready to go – LB764. All Nebraska has to do is put it up for a vote. As I write this, the Nebraska legislature is still in session. Nebraskans should call their legislators and their governor to demand their state stop pointlessly giving strength to their political enemies. Call

    1. It’s about the population numbers in each district. Also, bear in mind, NE is the only Unicameral state in the US, which probably also has some bearing on this. I don’t have a good understanding of that subject so I couldn’t possibly come to any conclusion w/o that.

Federal court strikes down Biden’s climate rule for states

    Excerpt:

“If Congress did purport to give the Administrator authority to set state policy, that would raise a different and arguably bigger problem,” Beaton wrote in his ruling. “Modern constitutional doctrine allows Congress to demand much from states, but it cannot commandeer or coerce the apparatus of state governments into mere administrative districts of the federal government.”
